Business profile: Jones the bookie is ready for the 'off' By Martin Baker. 12:01AM GMT 23 Nov 2003. Peter Jones's office is dominated by a framed edition of a Times front page from earlier this year. Perched high in a racecourse box is the Queen, looking happy and relaxed. Next to in paper research conference, her is a distinctly uncomfortable-looking Jones. As I examine this trophy, as all who penetrate the essay inner sanctum of the Tote's truly horrible Lubyanka-style building must, a wag suggests that it looks as though someone (and not Jones) has just broken wind.

Jones laughs uproariously at this idea, then quickly - loyally - stops. Methane, even royal methane, is just not funny. Her Majesty, in in paper conservation conference, fact, has brought us together in a roundabout sort of way. Jones is desperately hoping that the long-awaited privatisation of the Tote will be announced in this week's Queen's Speech. Jones has been chairman of the quasi-governmental bookie (it isn't quite state-owned, but the government has operational oversight) for more than six years. Proposal. Now he raring to race into the private sector, and his desire for advances in paper research the commercial freedoms this would bring is palpable. But equally on display is his fear that some bureaucrat will lob a procedural spanner into the works. Our nightmare scenario is having got to this point, someone in government decides something else is proposal question more important. Jones made a decent pile in advertising (estimates vary, but options and the sale of the BMP agency where he worked brought him a seven figure sum). The contrast with the conservation research conference cut and thrust of 'Adland' is conspicuously frustrating and the association with government has not been happy. On several occasions [the Government] actually repudiated any responsibility for our debt.

So when we were looking at buying chains of bookmakers, the Government said we could go ahead but that we couldn't rely on it to stand behind us. They told our bankers that, so we didn't even get favourable terms from them. Black Fundamental Hole Star. The Tote runs a telephone and internet betting business, a racecourse division, and a network of shops that has grown from 200 to 450 under Jones's stewardship. Jones's bankers, NM Rothschild, tell him that ?150m for everything is the benchmark price. So how much will Jones and the Tote team get if the privatisation goes ahead? It seems to be tradition that round about 5 per cent of advances research, value goes to the staff in some form of shares, he says. The Tote has about 4,000 people associated with it, but not all of them will qualify for a stake.

The size of that equity participation will be affected by factors such as how long the proposal business is allowed to retain its licenced monopoly on totalisator betting. Advances In Paper Conference. For those who don't know the form, this is the kind of betting an accountant would come up with. The Tote takes the punters' cash, takes a set percentage as profit (which the Tote ploughs back into racing) and pays out the rest to fundamental hole, the winners. The Tote will have a monopoly to do this for anything up to 15 years after privatisation. Jones says government thinking is advances in paper research conference between five and seven years' protection - I'm obviously hoping for a figure nearer the seven-year mark.

There are other factors that add uncertainty to essay of a, the issue. A trust has been set up to take the Tote private if the sale is announced. The current government policy is to conference, sell the minute assignment Tote to the Racing Trust. If you like, this will enshrine the status quo in that at conference, the moment the Government holds the Tote in trust for letter racing. Now racing's going to advances in paper conference, have its own trust to essay autobiography of a, hold the Tote, and the Government's going to get a few bob for its trouble.

But that is just Plan A. Jones favours it, but he is a commercial animal, and has contingency schemes set up if the notoriously slow-moving and cautious industry of in paper conservation research conference, racing fails to deliver the dissertation fundamental hole phenomenological few bob. [The Government] has made it clear that if racing for some reason doesn't come up with the money, it reserves the right to sell the Tote in a different kind of way. We've said that in in paper conservation research conference, that event - which is unlikely at this moment - we reserve our right to think twice essay, get involved in any other form of selling process, which could at one extreme be a management buyout. We're behind what they're trying to do now, but if it breaks down for conservation research conference any reason, we're not ruling ourselves out of the game. For all Jones's eagerness to get out there and essay of a newspaper, compete on a commercial footing, he recognises that the Tote is a small player (it has about 4 per cent of the total betting market) that needs favourable conditions to get off to a good start. At the end of the licence period, it's going to be a free for all. Anyone who wants to will be able to in paper research, set up a Tote for themselves. Rhythm. We think we need a period of protection - to paint the walls if nothing else. He laughs pleasantly again, an antidote to his dreadful Putney office, which is a symphony of prison greys, rusted browns and shapeless, decaying sofas. Can this really be a prime mover from one of the sexiest ad agencies in what is advances in paper research conference a self-professedly sexy business?

On top of swapping all the brushed steel and research proposal question, the clean lines for in paper conservation research office decor modelled on black fundamental issue a diseased lung, he took a vast pay cut to come to the Tote. His salary of ?90,000 is apparently about 10 per cent of conference, his basic pay at the ad agency Omnicom before the New York to essay, London commute got to him. There are good reasons for the brutal ugliness of the office: the taxpayer doesn't want to conservation research conference, pay for pretty carpets. And he didn't need the money by the time he took the Tote job. But the real reason he swapped careers is think twice before that Jones absolutely adores racing. He laughs again: We all make our mistakes. Mine was backing a winner when I was about 10. I thought it was easy.

I've backed many a loser since. He is massively keen on all sports and follows Charlton Athletic in football and in paper research, Wales in rugby (he's one of that army of Welshmen who have never lived in Wales). Having graduated from the London School of Economics, Jones used his abilities as a statistician to start one of the first quantitative racing databases. And his speciality in advertising was marrying quantitative research with qualitative work (Jones's agency produced such landmark ads as the Smash instant mash Martians and John Smith's beer's iconic champion, the doleful Arkwright). He also used his skills to collate comprehensive information into black neutron, which trainer won which races where, and advances conservation conference, with which jockeys. Much of this was published in the Racing Post. Jones's contemporaries in advertising attest to research question, his overriding passion for racing. He has run the advances in paper conservation research conference two careers in parallel, and it is only now in his later years, that the racing has become dominant. When his predecessor, Lord (Woodrow) Wyatt left the job in 1997, Jones, a founder member of the BHB in 1993 and a member of the Tote, was in reasonably good shape to take the chairmanship on. Jones has wrought changes as chairman - a management incentive scheme, a change of terms on Tote betting, the launch of new betting schemes.

But he is not a hirer and think before you act essay, firer. He seeks loyalty rather than obedience, and builds consensus through getting folk to agree to his assiduously garnered and collated research. One senses that his trust in figures may have something to do with his upbringing. His parents were mental health nurses, and he grew up in the grounds of an institution. I have been used to dealing with unusual personalities. I have seen people who were highly intelligent but had a flaw that stopped them achieving their full potential, he says. A wit might say this was the perfect schooling for someone going into ad agency management. But all that is behind him. Advances Research Conference. India #038; Bhutan, 2016 – a mammal trip report. It has been a dream for years to advances in paper conservation research conference, visit Kaziranga Nationalpark. Rhythm Essay! Pobitora and Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary in India and finally Bhutan were equally on my wish list. Duration of advances conservation research conference, trip: october 27th to november 12th, 2016 – 17 days. Weather: always sunny, comfortably warm, mornings in the mountains (Buthan) with rime.

A rhino in the plains of Pobitora Wildlife Sancutuary. Free ranging wild mammal species seen – total within 17 days: 20. I arrive early in the afternoon at Guwahati Airport. The plan is to visit Guwahati Zoo the next day. But after around 11 hours travelling and research some busy days prior departure, I want to reward myself and be surrounded by nature. Therefore I choose to travel another two hours by car and eventually arrive at Maibong Resort on the edge of Pobitora Wildlife Refuge. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is about 48 km by road from advances in paper conservation research Guwahati. Reportedly it has the densest population of the Great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros in pwc strategy consulting, the world: almost 100 animals per 38.8 square kilometres – though only 16 km? is effective rhino habitat. Advances Conservation! Besides rhinoceros other reported animals are Leopard, Wild Boar, Barking Deer, Wild Buffalo etc.

I had made a reservation with Nipen Nath, the owner of Maibong Resort. After a quick checkin and moving into a lovely Cottage, one of the staff offers me a motorcycle ride to the edge of the reserve. Last Minute! This is quite a challenge with my tripod, camera and a 600 mm lens on advances conservation research conference one shoulder. But me and question the lense even survive the research conference potholes and I am happy about the minute straightforward indian way of advances in paper conservation research, setting one’s hand to a task. We follow Pobitora Road in last assignment, southwesterly direction for only a kilometer or two. The road leads over a dam with agricultural land to the right and the reserve to the left. I am overwhelmed with the first impressions. Indian boy showing me a place, where rhinos cross from the sanctuary into the cultivated fields. Rhino track: Note the advances conservation research indentation of the three toes (ring – O 2 cm – for size comparison)

Chestnut-tailed Starling (Sturnia malabarica), Graukopfstar. Green Bee-Eater (Merops orientalis), Smaragdspint. Black-hooded Oriol (Oriolus xanthornus) , Schwarzkopfpirol. Fishermen at the edge of Pobitora Sanctuary. There is a small group of wild buffaloes crossing through the tall grass.

I see birds allover: waterfowl gathering adjacent to the numerous waterbodies, Green Bee-Eaters and research question example Indian Roller on the wires, Chestnut-Tailed starlings in the trees, Asian Openbills flying over … and, and, and. The highlight of the afternoon is the boisterous meeting of three rhinos. To me it looks as if a mother tries to research, prevent a male to get closer to her calf. Essay Newspaper! Anyway: The Greater one-horned Rhinoceros for me represents the creature from primeval times – just by the look of it. When you hear it, this impression is in paper research conference, even intensified. I am happy! Saturday, Oktober 29th 2016. Black-rumped Flameback (Dinopium benghalense) , Goldruckenspecht.

I start at 5 am and walk down the road that I drove last night. I do not get to think before you act, see more mammals, but my bird list gets longer and longer … Storkbilled Kingfisher (Pelargopsis capensis) , Storchschnabelliest. After breakfast I meet with my guide and driver. In Paper Conference! We go back to Guwahati, where we spend the whole day to work on my caprinae world project. I can recommend the think you act Assam state zoo even to those who express reservations about zoos. The park itself is spacious, green, with lots of big trees. Advances Research! Many enclosures are spacious too.

I observe quite a few free ranging mammals and birds that I do not see again on this trip like Indian Muntjac, Small Indian Mongoose, Hoary-bellied Himalayan Squirrel, Black-crowned Night Heron and Rufous Treepie. Hoary-bellied Himalayan Squirrel (Callosciurus pygerythrus) , Irawadi-Hornchen. Of all the squirrels on the trip this Hoary-bellied Himalayan Squirrel was the most approachable. The „Assamese Red Serow“ at pwc strategy consulting, Guwahati zoo, a yet undescribed subspecies/species. The „true“ Red Serow (Capricornis rubidus) has hairs with a black base. The Hair of the Assamese Red Serow ist white at the base. Indian Muntjac (Munticacus muntjak) , Indischer Muntjak.

Small Indian Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) , Kleiner Mungo. Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) , Rhesusaffe. In the evening we drive back to Pobitora and I am invited to celebrate Divali with some local people in the garden, where my cottage is. Candels enlighten the garden. Women sing and dance – and advances in paper conservation conference are not deterred by the hundreds of crackers that are fired by the boys of the nearby village. Later the police passes by, two cars with blue lights switched on. I think, how humorous the Indian police is! To accompany the festivities with the autobiography means they have at hand … The next day I am told that two poachers were shot in an attempt to kill a rhino … Newspaper article confirming the severe line of in paper conservation conference, action against of life poachers. With the first light I go on a jeep safari for an hour or two.

We drive very close to conservation, a rhino mum with her kid which forces the two to minute assignment, nervously stand up … The passage through a forest produces a single wild boar, but no more birds. Unfortunately I can not convince my driver to defer office work until later. He is advances in paper conservation research conference, constantly on the phone, which restricts somehow the nature experience. After the drive I conclude: Another walk on the dam would have been more satisfying. A rhino mum: not quite pleased with our encounter. A single wild boar (Sus scrufa) in the forest section of you act essay, Pobitora Sanctuary. Reportedly locals are allowed to cut firewood and drive livestock into the woods. It’s 260 kilometers to Dimapur. We need the whole day to get there.

On the one hand I am surprised to see vast stretches of timber along the in paper research conference road, but on the other hand it makes me sad to see no wildlife at all and hardly a bird. Rhythm Essay! I guess this is, what is called „empty forest syndrome“. In Dimapur I embark at „De Oriental Dream“. It is not exactly a dream, but a clean place in in paper conservation, this otherwise dusty and of a newspaper noisy town – and they serve cold beer in in paper conference, the restaurant. Women dressed for of life essay Divali on the road to Dimapur. Domesticated buffalo: Note the advances in paper research conference much smaller horns compared to the wild form (see „Kaziranga“ chapter) I visit Nagaland Zoological Park.

I also recommend this zoo, again for it’s free ranging animals: For example I see Capped Langur and Pied Hornbill. Free ranging Capped Langur (Trachypithecus pileatus), Kappenlangur, at Dimapur zoo. The plan is to proceed to Imphal and Loktak Lake, the last minute only place in the world to in paper conservation, see wild Manipur Brow-antlered Deer. Minute Assignment! But the plan fails. The closer we drive to the Nagaland-Manipur border, the more army presence you find. There are soldiers patrouling in pairs alongside the road, each pair being only a few 100 meteres apart.

I also notice that my guides become uneasy. They don’t feel comfortable in advances in paper research conference, a region, where the pwc strategy consulting locals were headhunters until the 1960ies, where several insurgent armed groups seek indepependence from India or fight eachother. No wildlife whatsoever. Around noon we reach the border. My guides tell me not to talk to anybody. An official waves us near his office. He tells us that the road will be blocked for around 24 hours.

I don’t have to think twice, my schedule is very tight. Research! If we waited we would eventually loose time at essay autobiography, more productive sites. So we turn, make a brief stop at the Nagaland State Museum in Kohima and proceed to Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, where we arrive after sunset and get a room in the forest guest house. Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016. We start early for a forest walk.

Accompanied by forest officer Heremba Bhuyan and armed guide Pintumedhi. Pintumedhi tells us that he had seen a leopard at research conference, 4:30 am 500 m from the buildings. Pity! I probably missed it by 15 minutes. Rhythm! The vegetation in the forest is very dense, so all the ground-dwelling animals can only be detected, when they cross the paths.

That way leopards in Gibbon Sancturay are seen 4 to 6 times a year. According to the guides there are no tigers in the sanctuary. The walk is very productive. Within a few hours before breakfast we see Northern Pig-tailed Macaque, Capped Langur, Rhesus Macaque, Hoolock Gibbon, Himalayan Striped Squirrel, Malayan Giant Squirrel, and a Pallas’s Squirrel. Capped Langur ( Trachypithecus pileatus), Kappenlangur, at Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary. Northern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca leonina) , Nordlicher Schweinsaffe. Himalayan Striped Squirrel (Tamiops macclellandi) , Himalaya-Streifenhornchen.

Pallas’s Squirrel (Callosciurus erythraeus), Pallashornchen. Malayan Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor) , Schwarzes Riesenhornchen. Hoolock Gibbon (Bunopithecus hoolock) – male, Wei?brauengibbon. A female Hoolock Gibbon (Bunopithecus hoolock) balancing a berry on the tip of her tongue. Immature Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) , Rhesusaffe. After breakfast I have to realise that somebody else had breakfast too.

While still sitting on a chair something wobbles down my shank. I look down and see a leech fully soaked with my blood on the floor. In Paper Conservation! Good, that I notice that now, so I can prepare for the next trip. I get myself organised, wash some clothes and are ready for last minute an eventing-/night walk. I love the conservation research conference atmosphere especially at night. Twice Essay! My flashlight illuminates the forest. We hear cicadas and geckos, but see only once eyeshine.

The vegetation is so dense that we fail to find out what is behind those eyes. I was hoping for a Slow Lori. But no luck! Tokey (Gekko gekko) , Tokee. Thursday, November 3rd, 2016.

The next morning we start on the trail that we had already walked the day before. After about half an hour the path befurcates. We first walk the stretch to the left. It is partially overgrown and has wet sections. I have pulled up my light colored socks over the trousers. Every 50 meters or so it is necessary to stop and check for advances in paper conference leeches.

At each stop I flip off 10 to 15 of them. I had not expected that much during the autobiography newspaper dry season. We reach the railway track that also passes by the forest guest house. There is a metal construction that should function as a bridge for the monkeys to advances research, cross from before you act essay one side of the sanctuary to the other. Advances Conservation Research Conference! But apparently it does not work since locals have cut off the ropes that connect the proposal example monkey bridge to the surronding trees. Gibbons are said to not come down to the ground.

We go back and try the other trail – only to run into some elephants that are heared in the bush. I remember Jon Hall’s 2008 Assam Trip Report writing about his elephant experiences at Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary: „… rather too close for comfort“. Pintumedhi tells me that one of his other jobs is to chase elephants back into the forest during harvest time. The elephants then try to leave the sanctuary and conservation forage on the field products. Consulting Letter! A shot with a rifle in the air usually is in paper conservation, enough to impress the big animals.

Based on this experience forest guards take at least one rifle with them when they guide tourists. We get one more chance to get close to Gibbons. Before Essay! This time its a small familiy with mum and dad and a young. Research Conference! And they are very noisy. I don’t know if they are excited because of our presence, but they actually do not sound frightened and you hear Gibbons calling in the sancturary quite often several times during the day (but usually from far distances). Dissertation Fundamental Hole Issue Neutron Star! So let’s call it a „concert“. Advances In Paper Research! And I have to say: This concert is so far my most impressive encounter with primates! And I can even fully enjoy it, since they are louder than my guides talking on their smartphones!! And even better: The guides watch me recording the last assignment Gibbon calls and start having fun doing the same with their phones.

Within 4 hours we are at Kaziranga National Park. I stay at Wild Grass Resort, a true Safari Lodge with a big rambling garden, a high ceiling dining room and excellent food. I take the in paper research conference 5am elephant ride in the central section. I can’t believe how busy it is at this time of the day. Research Example! But I am prepared for other people and enjoy watching them: the mother who bottle-feeds her toddler on the back of the elephant or the mahouts who steer their elephants with their naked feet and in paper conference make them pose with their trunks curled up. Also the alpenglow in the Himalayas is great (or should it be Himalaya glow?). Oh yes, and there is wildlife on the way: Hog Deer, Baransinghas, Rhinos.

Although I prefer wildlife watching in peace, I would do the elephant ride again. Sunrise in the Himalayas while being on the way through Kaziranga NP. Barasingha or Swamp Deer (Cervus duvaucelii) , Barasingha. A mahout’s controlling device. Asiatic Wild Buffalo (Bubalus arnee) , Wasserbuffel. Hog Deer (Axis porcinus), Schweinshirsch.

I drive the rest of the morning through the central part, and stay the afternoon in the western section. There is wildlife everywhere: Asian Elephants, Baransinghas, Asiatic Wild Buffalos, Greater one-horned Rhinos, Hog Deer and Wild Boar. In terms of birds I get most of the birds I already saw at Pobitora. And on research question top of that there is new species like the in paper conservation Asian Barred Owlet, White Rumped Shama and one of black dissertation fundamental star, my favourites: Red Junglefowl. Very poor Wild Pig (Sus scrofa), Wildschwein. Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus) , Bankivahuhn. Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) , Asiatischer Elefant. Domestic elephant on the way home with fodder. In the evening, coming back to conservation research conference, the lodge, I am still hyped.

Talking to my guide Jintu I do not pay much attention to the surrounding. But there! Just 50 centimeters from my left foot something moves. Something yellow. „A snake“, I shout. And indeed, In the light of my flashlight and the light of Jintu’s smartphone we marvel at a Banded Krait. Later I read: „A clinical toxicology study gives an untreated mortality rate of 1to10 percent, which may be because when bites do occur, the rate of essay, envenomation when biting defensively is thought to be very low.“ The book of Indian Reptiles and Amphibians says: „A bullock struck by it (Banded Krait) is reported to have died in about 20 minutes after being bitten.“

I guess once bitten, you have to hope the Krait has not mistaken you for a bullock. Conservation Research Conference! Apart from that it does not really calm you down when you realise that the gap between the door of of a newspaper, your cottage and the floor matches the diameter of a Banded Krait … Severly poisonous Banded Krait (Bungarus fasciatus) , Gebanderte Krait. Saturday, November 5th, 2016. I go to the eastern sector of the park this morning. For whatever reason the advances conservation conference safaris do start only at 7:30 pm.

The eastern part is supposedly very good for birds and pwc strategy cover letter especially raptors like Pallas Fisheagle, Serpent Crested Eagle and Osprey. Advances In Paper Conservation Research Conference! I get one more mammal species on my list: an otter. A raptor (not identified) forces a Lesser Adjutant to abandon it’s prey, a snake. Smoth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) , Weichfellotter. A herd of pwc strategy consulting cover letter, Swamp Deer (Cervus duvaucelii), Barasingha, in conservation, front of a bathing elephant. Pallas’s Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) , Bindenseeadler. Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis) , Hinduracke with captured baby snake. According to different sources (Kaziranga NP, WWF India and consulting letter Vivek Menon: Field Guide to Indian Mammals) there are all three Indian otter species living at Kaziranga NP: Eurasian Otter, Smooth-coated Otter, Small-clawed Otter.

I can observe and advances in paper research photograph one specimen. I am pretty far away to make a proper identification, but because of the cover letter smooth, chocolate-brown coat, the lighter underside and because it’s active by advances conservation day, I believe it is proposal, a Smooth-coated Otter. In the advances research conference afternoon there is also a chance for tiger, but I have to leave by research proposal noon for Guwahati. Sunday, November 6th, 2016 – first day in Bhutan. Just before my flight goes to Bhutan I manage to visit the Guwahati dump for conference half an pwc strategy letter, hour – apparently the best site to see the in paper conservation conference endangered Greater Adjutant (Leptoptilos dubious) , Gro?er Adjutant. What a strange mix of fundamental hole phenomenological star, misery, biomass, poverty and the art of adaption. A good place to in paper research conference, learn about nature – provided you know how to convince your taxi driver not to flee from stench just after arrival! Next country: promising Bhutan. According to IUCN, Bhutan is viewed as a model for of life proactive conservation initiatives.

Furthermore the in paper Kingdom has received international acclaim for its commitment to maintain its biodiversity. Black Issue Neutron! This is reflected in research, the decision to: – maintain at think twice, least 60 percent of the advances conservation land under forest cover. – designate more than 40 percent of its territory as national parks and other protected areas. – identify a further 9 percent of land area as biodiversity corridors linking the rhythm of life protected areas. The government also aims to promote conservation as part of its plan to target Gross National Happiness. I arrive at in paper conservation research conference, Paro Airport/Bhutan and go straight to the Motithang Preserve near Thimphu to continuo work on my caprinae world project. Motithang Preserve is the fundamental neutron star only zoo in the world with Bhutan Takin and Himalayan Serow. East-Himalayan Goral, Muntjac and research conference Sambar they keep too. Bhutan takin (Budorcas taxicolor whitei) , Bhutan-Takin. Himalayan Serow (Capricornis thar) , Himalaya-Serau.

We spend the whole day at black dissertation fundamental issue phenomenological star, Cheri monastery. My companions are Sangay – my guide – and Kuenga – the driver. To my knowledge Cheri monastery is the only place in conservation research, the world, where a sighting of a wild Himalayan Brown Goral – the eastern subspecies of the Himalayan Goral – is guaranteed. And sure enough, after about half an hour walk to the base of the monastery, I see my first Brown Gorals. It’s late in the morning and most animals rest under some trees. Later in the afternoon around 20 of them move onto the meadow infront of the main building complex. Brown Himalayan Goral (Naemorhedus goral goral) , Osthimalaya-Goral. The gorals at Cheri Monastery are very habituated.

You would have a hard time to find the gorals in the forest. At Cheri monastery a sighting is guaranteed – at autobiography newspaper, least in in paper research, november. Gorals and nutcrackers feed on think twice essay leftovers that the advances in paper research conference monks dispose behind the walls of the pwc strategy letter monastery. I guess the reason why people so far seem not to pay much attention to these fantastic beasts at Cheri monastery is that they behave like domestic animals. Conservation Conference! During my photography I sometimes could have touched them by last minute stretching my arm. And there is advances research, also domestic goats and sheep at the monastery, which build mixed herds with the gorals on the meadow.

There is probably several reasons why the gorals stay at the monastery: The meadow provides good, easily accessible fodder. The monks dispose sacrifices like tsampa (a mix of roasted flour and pwc strategy consulting letter salted butter tea) and cookies before they decay by in paper research conference just throwing them over the walls of the consulting letter monastery. Advances In Paper Conservation! Gorals and Spotted Nutcrackers are happy customers. The monks tell us that there is Leopards and Himalayan Black Bears in pwc strategy consulting cover letter, the area. Therefore it could be advantageous for the gorals to advances in paper conference, stay close to essay autobiography of a newspaper, humans. Advances In Paper Conservation! Predators might be reluctant to black dissertation fundamental issue phenomenological, come that close. A testimony of the good Bhutanese humor: The monks could just not understand, why I would take pictures of „their“ gorals all day.

So they started making fun of me. Eventually one of advances in paper research conference, them hoaxed me by making selfies with the gorals. Never was Cheri monastery more in think, danger of collapsing through an earthquake caused by laughing monks (not in the picture). #128521; I spend another day at the Motithang Preserve to get good photos of Takin and Serow. The only free-ranging wild mammal species I see is conservation research conference, a Himalayan Striped Squirrel. Wednesday, November 9th, 2016.

Assamese Macaque (Macaca assamensis) , Assam-Makak – stressed male; salving female. We drive from think before Thimphu to Pele La Pass via Dochula Pass (3050 m) and advances conference Punakha. Almost the whole stretch in of a, under construction. In Paper Conservation Research! The only mammals we see is autobiography of a, a group of Assamese Macaque. Close to Pele La Pass is an abandoned road that is famous for its pheasants. In Paper Research! Serows have been seen here too – the pwc strategy consulting letter main reason for advances in paper me to dissertation issue phenomenological star, come here. But we are not very lucky. Locals flush the forests to collect Rhododendron leaves, that they use for litter.

We hope that it gets quiter after we have passed them, but instead we find out that construction workers have opened a quarry further down the road. I search the gullies for serow, but the only mammal I see is a pika. Assamese Macaque (Macaca assamensis) , Assam-Makak. Yellow-billed Blue Magpie (Urocissa flavirostris) , Gelbschnabelkitta. White-browed Fulvetta, (Fulvetta vinipectus) , Wei?brauen-Alcippe. Others have seen pikas here too.

Jon Hall – on his trip in 2008 – thinks his pika from Pele La is a Royle’s Pika, but he is not sure. Jeff Blincow identifies a pika from research conference Pele La on his 2013 trip as Moupin Pika. I have not much time to identify „my“ pika. I can only say that it is small compared to, let’s say, Ladakh Pika (which I know, but which does not occur in Bhutan). It is not lightcoloured like Plateau Pika. The surrounding habitat, Rhododendron forest, and assignment the elevation fits for both, Royle’s Pika and Moupin Pika. So I better leave the ID of this one open. We wait until sunset and then walk back. Again I check the gullies with my flashlight: but no eye shine of wild animals is detected. The plan was to research conference, come here again early in the morning, but we reckon it is not worth it.

You can just hope that the whole situation calmes down once the road construction has terminated. We drive to Phobjikha, where we overnight at a homestay. During the day Sangay tells me about the Devine Madman, Drukpa Kunley, a buddhist saint, who was known for his crazy methods of enlightening, loving beer and sex. Minute! He stands for combining vitality and spirituality. So when we spotlight this creature, it is instantly clear that we face him … eventually he turns out to be a domestic yak. Thursday, November 10th, 2016. Phobjikha Valley is famous for it’s Black-necked Cranes.

It is the most important wintering habitat in Bhutan. Due to advances research, conservation work the numbers have risen from around 100 in the end of the 1980s to 457 in the winter of 2015/16. Research! I visit the local Crance information center, where I obtain these figures. Also noteworthy: Leopards visit the valley at night and prey on in paper conservation the cranes. Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis) , Schwarzhalskranich. Large-billed Crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) , Dickschnabelkrahe. We stay at Yanka’s house, a local carpenter. I am keen on before essay his house which he just finished after eight years of building.

Yanka got help from 7 to 8 people from the village; it cost him 5000 Dollar. Advances Research! He gets 35 Dollars for having me overnight. This seems fair and I believe that ecotourism can improve the situation of people who are envolved. Striated Laughing Thrush (Garrulax striatus) , Streifenhaherling. Michal Polanski writes in his 2010-trip report: „Road building is to be blamed for worst damages in Bhutanese environment. … Rocks and debris is pulled down the slopes destroying hundreds of hectares of vegetation …“ I don’t see it that way. The road building is not the actual problem.

The impact is comparable to a landslide or a fire: the forest is destroyed on think before a comparatively small scale. But at the same time new, more open habitat is created. Conservation Research Conference! Biodiversity can even be enhanced. The Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria), Mauerlaufer, is attracted by the steep cliffs, that are created through road construction. The real problem is the people, who use the pwc strategy cover letter roads.

Even though the Punakha-Pele La-Highway is not a new road (it is broadened from research conference one- to two lane), it will contribute to essay of a, make remote areas of the country more accessible (of course this is what roads are made for, but at the same time the loss of remoteness is what many virgin forest species threatens). Then again, as I pointed out already: Bhutan has a number of progressive environmental policies. On the other hand the country needs development. Let’s hope, they find a good compromise. Bhutan is the future.

ABC Considering a Sitcom Based on the Life of Sportscenter Anchor Sage Steele. essay nam viet war American Studies Resources Centre at LJMU. Vietnam: a watershed in war writing. by Richard Hills. The experience of Vietnam changed forever the nature of writing about war in American culture. Advances In Paper Conservation Research. Literature on the two World Wars tapped into proposal a sense of cultural identity, masculinity and individual heroism to describe the in paper research American response as heroic and victorious and promote an idea of assignment, a ‘good war’ in conservation research which national interests are ultimately restored. By contrast, the essay of a newspaper Vietnam War was fought against a background of a culturally fragmented society. By examining the advances in paper conservation research work of pwc strategy, writers such as Norman Mailer, Tim O’Brien and Michael Herr, and the photographs of Tim Page, it explores the way in which war was portrayed in a far more realistic, if often ugly light. This article is adapted from the winning entry in this year’s essay competition, Richard Hills, a final year student at Liverpool John Moores University. Posted 13 February 2003.

Honesty in writing. The Historical versus the personal in war writing. The war in Vietnam continues to evoke images and representations of an enduring and traumatic nature and remains a dominant political, social and moral benchmark in the contemporary American cultural consciousness. The textual diversity in literature, art, journalism and music of Vietnam is advances research conference extensive, and chronicles the histories and legacies of the struggle to reflect a range of social and cultural anxieties that were borne out of the experience. Historically therefore, war texts have operated as genres which have had their origins in expressing and revealing the experience of conflict and working as mediums by which a society can make sense of a particular national and cultural situation. Contemporary preconceptions of Vietnam are perhaps due largely to consulting cover letter, the imagery prevalent in this multiplicity of textual information. The diverse accounts of the histories and experiences of the conflict in literature can be seen as fairly interdisciplinary in their approaches, since the styles and aims of war reporting are both quite broad and ultimately similar in their aims. The variety in terms of advances in paper conservation research conference, methodology is also widespread, ranging from the research proposal question fictional novels of DelVecchio for example, to personal memoirs in a first person narrative, oral histories and also factual journalistic reportage.

Due to the contrasting styles and graphic content of war writing, the in paper conservation research literature of Vietnam can perhaps be seen as displaying ideologies of combat much more prominently than any other type of genre – both in terms of proposal, form and also in outlook. Consequently, war writing has therefore functioned as traditionally dominant generic form. As a result, there is a sense in which a linguistic authority has developed in these texts in order to reflect war as action, war as institution, war as nation, and war as an in paper conference, individual autobiographical experience. It is clear therefore that war writing is essay autobiography of a rich in conservation form and aims to highlight a collection of contrasting perspectives and ideologies in order to externalise the various emotional experiences of war. As a result, it can be interpreted that a primary narrative intention is twice before you act concerned not only with an attempt to conservation research conference, categorise experience of battle in historical and personal terms, but also an black dissertation fundamental hole neutron phenomenological, attempt to embody the tension between the historical and the personal in the text. David Wyatt, in his collection Out of the Sixties , recognises the importance of war writing as culturally and historically important and asserts his view that ‘the thread that ties these various genres together is the importance of a common response and the need to represent these culturally insidious images.’ This essay will consider a variety of cultural responses to the war in advances conference Vietnam and will firstly examine the writing of Michael Herr and Tim O’Brien in order to address the distinctive styles and objectives of war literature.

The essay will also examine the impact of photographic narratives as dominant cultural and historical accounts. Through an analysis of these texts in terms of their style and form, the essay will then ask what these narratives are ultimately trying to achieve in their portrayals and essay autobiography representations and will consider whether they work in establishing a sense of the futility and horror of in paper research, Vietnam. The prominence of a more innovative and modern approach in the literature of Vietnam can be seen as widely removed from the style of last minute assignment, war writing of advances in paper research, World Wars One and Two. By tapping into and referring to a sense of cultural identity, masculinity and individual heroism, this previous war literature had its origins in providing enduring cultural narratives and ideologies of the American national and of victory. Autobiography Of A Newspaper. Consequently, it had been difficult to produce an anti-war novel due to the ways in which such texts functioned as dossiers indicative of conservative American ideals and which were complimentary to conservation conference, a patriotic consciousness. By suggesting and describing the American response as heroic and victorious, there is a sense in which these texts promote an idea of a ‘good war’ in last assignment which national interests are ultimately restored and delivered in in paper conservation research ways an American public would appreciate. These novels are therefore seen as reflexive of the current social and cover letter historical conditions in their outlook. As a result, there is a sense in which they can perhaps also work as propaganda literature in their assessments of the enemy and in the endorsement of national welfare. In contrast, Norman Mailer was aware of the social and cultural implications during which the earlier war genre was produced and attempted to construct reactionary images in his literature so as to counteract the political implications this writing brought about. By simultaneously attempting to de-humanise the concept of war and highlight war literature as a device that could criticise domestic policies, Mailer was immediately able to render the military effort futile and critique the conflict through bold emotional imagery and a more negative military representation.

The Naked and the Dead. In his novel The Naked and the Dead , Mailer is somewhat radical in his appraisals of the war effort and attempts to reflect the more unsavoury nature of combat in a couple of ways. Advances Conservation Conference. Firstly, by discarding the accepted American idea of a ‘good war’ and secondly by replacing the traditional stereotyped representation of the heroic and crusading American soldier with a less dramatic portrayal. Through his presentation of the soldiers as sex driven, brutal, racist alcoholics, and by commenting on the graphic description of the war effort, Mailer is able to highlight the futility of letter, modern combat and present Sergeant Croft as a pseudo fascist madman. In doing this, Mailer’s character representation subverts the earlier image of the American soldier and asks questions about the validity of the common stereotype of the American soldiers as gallant and laudable heroes. Mailer’s characters are revealed as extremely un-amiable in their treatment of themselves and the enemy.

In Nicolas Tomalin’s extract from The New Journalism entitled The General Goes Zapping Charlie Cong , the American soldiers indicate their reluctance to recognise the Vietcong as human in a refusal of individuality. “ ‘There’s no better way to in paper research conference, fight than goin out to shoot VCs. An’ there’s nothing I love better than killin’ ‘Cong. No sir.’ “ In contrast, Mailers characters acknowledge the enemy as human whilst remaining committed to the massacre of the pwc strategy letter enemy to in paper, provide a comment on the futility of the conflict. The fact that Sergeant Croft’s more liberal superior ultimately dies, suggests a metaphor to American society and offers a social critique on how war represents a nightmare scenario and will ultimately condemn and divide a functional society – as if a comment on the disruptive, conservative and bureaucratic nature of war. Mailer’s writing can be seen as a satirical attack on attitudes to war through his condemnation of the war effort and the traditional assertion of war as ‘good’. His style consequently contradicts and differs from the position of earlier war writing due to Mailer’s insistence that war is essentially socially unjust. In this sense, The Naked and the Dead can be seen as a re-negotiation of generic values to ultimately express a nihilistic vision of the dissertation fundamental phenomenological star effects of war on advances conservation research, the individual and society. Mailer successfully brings to light the disparity between certain representations of war as ‘good’ and what is twice before you act essay seen as a more accurate reality of unprecedented horror and moral betrayal.

The Things They Carried. Tim O’Brien explores similar themes in his account of Vietnam in The Things They Carried. The form of the text can be regarded in contrasting ways, in terms of a fictional novel or as a collection of personal memoirs. According to David Wyatt, Vietnam found itself, in the writing of it, “caught in a style match between what could be called innocent and informed accounts.” In thinking of the book as an informed account of Vietnam and therefore as chronicled non-fictional accounts, The Things They Carried can be seen as typical of returning to advances in paper research conference, the old tradition of war writing. This is recognisable in terms of the narrative emphasis O’Brien places on group camaraderie, individual heroism, and the way in which he and the other soldiers refer to the Vietcong as ‘Charlie’, - to reflect the ideology of American patriotism and rhythm essay the idea of the noble soldier fighting for justice. However, it is much clearer that the majority of the narrative is concerned with emotional turmoil and the distressing burden of the war effort, in this sense revealing the trauma and conservation threat and working as an innocent narrative despite O’Brien’s own Vietnam memories. In the chapter The Man I Killed O’Brien’s language encapsulates his horror, guilt and fear after having killed a young Vietcong soldier; “His jaw was in question example his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star shaped hole, his eyebrows were thin and shaped like a woman’s, his nose was undamaged, . his clean black hair was swept upward into a cowlick at the rear of his skull, … there was a butterfly on his chin, his neck was open to the spinal cord and the blood there was thick and shiny and it was this wound that had killed him.” The way in advances research conference which O’Brien describes the dead man provides an indication of the brutality and terror of war and is in keeping with Mailer’s adoption of the innocent war writing technique in The Naked and the Dead . The sense of unique grievance that O’Brien exudes through his language in his chapter highlights the fact that ‘war hurts’ and also reveals the reality of ‘Killing’.

It is research proposal question interesting that O’Brien makes use of a somewhat poetic style of language to describe a dead body in what might appear to be an attempt to disguise the horrific injuries and the suffering of in paper research conference, war. More realistically however, is the idea that this descriptive style is intended to provide a more informed vision of the rhythm essay conflict and in doing so, makes the reader aware of the extent of the suffering. The poetic references in language parody the brutality and masculinity of war in the description of his feminine features. The ‘star shaped hole’ is advances conservation research conference perhaps symbolic of the American flag and a reminder of the expectations of a nation for its soldiers to kill and destroy. At the same time however, the graphic nature of the language is equally indicative of both the graphic nature of bloodshed, and also the consequent emotionally draining aspect of the war. “We had ways of making the dead seem not so dead…. By slighting death … we pretended it was not the terrible thing it was.”

The fact that O’Brien finds it hard to of life essay, come to terms with something that was readily expected of conservation research, him as a soldier shows how Vietnam has forced him to internally struggle with his conscience. Furthermore, he is as a result unable to adhere to the stereotype of essay, being the ‘killer’ society expects of him. This highlights O’Brien’s sentiments of vulnerability and insecurity in elation to the enemy. O’Brien’s character seems to embrace wholeheartedly the in paper conservation research role of storyteller and social critic in the text. He is convincing in his argument that the text is a work of fiction rather than an black fundamental hole neutron, informed account based on personal experience. He discards the relevance of any informed authority in his accounts of war when he states: “Can the foot soldier teach anything important about the war, merely for having been there? I think not. He can tell war stories.”

In the quantity and quality of his work, O’Brien argues for well-told stories, as the least the in paper war deserves. Research. This is inherent in his assertion that if war fiction were produced exclusively by advances conservation conference accurate accounts of events in Vietnam, then the destructive nature of rhythm essay, combat would be more difficult to advances in paper conservation conference, achieve in writing. This is due to the fact that the soldiers failed to essay autobiography newspaper, recognise and appreciate the occurrence of in paper conservation research, singular events in relation to you act, a sense of an ultimate developing drama. O’Brien admits that in war stories, “absolute occurrence is irrelevant”. He makes the case that by retaining the importance of a degree of fiction in war novels; Vietnam can be given a shape that conveys its disparaging and negative forces in a broader context. David Wyatt emphasises that ‘the reflexivity of all war … becomes in The Things They Carried a masterful self-reflexivity, a continual re-figuring of earlier work in order to tell us “How to Tell a True War Story”.’ Ultimately, O’Brien suggests that war stories insist upon and perhaps largely consist of their desperate attempt to obtain or reflect the truth; conforming to the rhetoric of re-telling.

This use of repetition functions as a way of making sense of the war’s impact of devastation in both physical and personal terms. Michael Herr’s landmark invention of a new journalistic voice in Dispatches is similar to The Things They Carried in terms of it also attempting to represent the confused reality of Vietnam. The narrative is distinctive in terms of being a collection of factual journalism and reportage, and delivers innovative methods of relaying events through impressionistic and image-laden accounts of the struggle. In this sense, the text offers fresh and exciting ways of codifying the Vietnam experience. In contrast to the standard conventions and established language of in paper conference, orthodox war reporting, Herr’s journal is a composite of reports and articles to extend beyond an autobiographical account and ultimately offer a wider historical and cultural awareness of the black fundamental hole issue neutron conflict of Vietnam. Although Dispatches is generically different in the way is it not presented as a work of conference, fiction, it is comparable with Tim O’Brien in the sense of being a text primarily concerned with providing stories about the American experience in black fundamental star Vietnam. His achievements in the text arise from the implementation of in paper conservation, a disjointed narrative that immediately reflects the last assignment popular consumer culture amongst the American soldiers to ultimately portray a fragmented imagery of the conflict.

Consequently, Herr’s narrative comprises of a multiplicity of language; he creatively fuses the vocabulary of American youth and drug cultures by utilising hippie vernacular, pop lyrics, military jargon, black slang and technical press terms in what can be interpreted as a very post-modern appraisal of the Vietnam struggle. “He had the name Marlene tattooed on his upper arm, … On the back of advances in paper research conference, his flak jacket he had once written, “Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the shadow of Death I shall fear no evil, because I’m the meanest Muthafucker in black dissertation fundamental hole neutron phenomenological star the Valley,” but he had tried later, without much success, to scrub it off because, he explained, every damned dude in the DMZ had that written on their flak jackets. And he’d smile.” Herr’s accounts of the war are presented in a language that buys into in paper research conference the consciousness of the generation and which therefore inherently condemns the Vietnam conflict. This discourse of minute assignment, language is rich in the idea of humanity that transcends earlier war literature and consistently opposes the advances in paper conference more horrific side of Vietnam. Dispatches makes much of the comradeship of the proposal question soldiers and emphasises the role of charity in the face of in paper, adversity.

This alternative narrative in terms of pwc strategy consulting cover, style and language embodies Herr’s reportage as a critique of conventional war journalism. His narrative and use of techniques such as montage are in contrast to the approach of research, standard media correspondents, and reveal the difficulties involved in writing traditional ‘stories’ about Vietnam. The often-fragmented nature of autobiography of a, Herr’s narrative helps the reader to obtain a position in which to fully appreciate the experience of Vietnam, rather than relying upon a traditional linear discourse of narration. Advances Research. However, the subject matter of the autobiography newspaper text is perhaps less reliant on highlighting the actual experience of advances in paper research conference, Vietnam, and would prefer to discuss a fuller exploration of that experience. Rather than attempt to recreate the war in a literary documentation, Herr’s objectives can be interpreted as wanting to examine and investigate his memories of Vietnam.

His approach is based on the assumption that in order to obtain a more meaningful insight into rhythm essay the struggle; it is necessary to leave behind the actual events of the war and attempt to locate the experience of it in a much broader context. This approach is similar in form to the suggestions of Tim O’Brien in his work. Herr’s experience in Vietnam highlighted a problem in terms of condemning the popular representation of war in popular imagination and attempting to replace these images with what was considered to be a truthful reflection of American experience in Vietnam. In Paper. Herr maintains that the flexible nature of research example, war literature in promoting the idea of a ‘good war’ and the image of the heroic soldier hindered the reader from advances conservation research, arriving at a truer and more meaningful understanding of the hostility of war. Dispatches offers an alternative insight into the role and experience of the soldier. Due to his fragmented narrative and plethora of rhythm of life essay, linguistic jargon, Herr seems to suggest that Vietnam was futile from the point of view of all those who experienced it and stresses the impossibility of arriving at fixed meanings and rational thinking. Herr’s text is therefore symptomatic of a text rich in the discourse of truth and brutal reality. Rather than trying to explain or rationalise the war in any length, the conservation research conference stories of Herr and proposal other correspondents such as Tim Page, were primarily concerned with attempting to capture the horror and advances in paper conference beauty of the place – and thereby offer a more realistic and representative account of life in Vietnam.

It is therefore clear that the work of writers such as Mailer, O’Brien and Herr have had their origins in an attempt to re-emphasise the narcissistic nature of combat, whilst managing to retain and highlight the importance and beauty of pwc strategy consulting cover, life in an appraisal of advances in paper conference, humanity. These texts both discard the twice before you act notions of war as something symbolically rewarding, as was the case in previous war writing, and replace these sentiments with ideas about reality and civilisation. By highlighting the devastation of the war effort through both brutal and advances conference compassionate language and imagery, the reader is in a position to pwc strategy consulting, attain a more realistic account of the nihilistic characteristics of a war, and the effects this has in relation to individual experience. The war photography of Tim Page. With the publication of Dispatches in 1977 came to prominence the work of Vietnam War photographer Tim Page.

Page’s photographic evidence of Vietnam is complimentary to Herr’s written accounts in the sense that they both share a common quest to highlight the war’s experience both in terms of grief and suffering, but also in terms of recording the drug and rock aspects of advances in paper conservation research conference, GI culture. Before Essay. Herr quotes Page’s reaction to a request from a British publisher for a book which would “finally take the glamour out of the conservation conference war.” “Take the black dissertation fundamental hole star glamour out of the war?! I mean, how the bloody hell can you do that ? Go and take the glamour out of advances research conference, a Huey, go take the glamour out of a Sheridan … Can you take the glamour out of a Cobra or getting stoned on pwc strategy consulting cover letter, China Beach? … Oh war is good for you, you can’t take the conservation glamour out of that. It’s like trying to take the glamour out of sex, trying to take the glamour out of The Rolling Stones … I mean, you know that, it just can’t be done.” Dispatches led to a revival of interest in Page’s work. Rhythm Of Life. In an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London in 1980, Page made an issue of the ‘glamour’ of Vietnam and recalled how ‘groovy’ it had been playing with helicopters, tanks and piloting Skyraiders. Research. The point Page was trying to make through his photography was that war always was, and always will be, heavily invested in essay glamour, with glory and in machoism such is the representation of conflict in popular imagination.

The popular fascination with the glamour of war was therefore perhaps a result of the ways in which war had been previously reported, with much emphasis having been placed on the heroic and gallant actions of advances research conference, ‘good’ soldiers. However, Page delivers an rhythm essay, alternative view on the glamour of war. Advances In Paper Conservation Research Conference. Rather than choosing to portray Vietnam in terms of heroic action, Page captures much more outrageously the feelings and sentiments of a large demographic of women, children, soldiers and correspondents through pictures of great melancholy beauty. By dramatising the rock and roll aspect of GI culture, Page can be seen as subverting traditional representations of war and suggesting alternative ways to characterise what he believed were the realities of conflict. Consequently, perhaps Page’s most striking pictures are those in which he records the sixties-psychedelic side of the GI culture, and documents the terrorised black and white American soldiers in of life essay “the inanity of their predicament and the refuge they took in dope and rock.” This particular quality of the war was perhaps unique to Vietnam and is what Page refers to when he discusses the ‘glamour’ of war. This is not to say however that Page fails to recognise the more mundane aspects common to all wars such as the destruction of society and the indignity of in paper conservation research, suffering.

It is research proposal question simply that Page attempted to capture the enduring sense of reality in all areas to highlight a sense of in paper conference, perceived glamour in terms of suffering. In this sense, Page’s photography centres on the ultimate reality that there is no glamour at all. Page recognises and highlights through his work that the earlier representations are capable of glamorising the indignity of war. Pwc Strategy Cover Letter. Consequently, Page can therefore be regarded as being conscious of the realities of war, whilst still retaining his own private sense of glamour. Tim Page is typical of a collection of Vietnam artists who realised that their texts needed renegotiations of advances in paper, what had gone before them in terms of form and style, and in doing so, offer new interpretations and conclusions in their work. Such was the supremacy and last minute assignment dominance of the war image in popular culture that the reality and lived experiences were sometimes only partially discovered. As a consequence, a distinction between what was considered fact and fiction was exposed to advances conservation research, suggest that many experiences were interpreted as fictional stories.

The actual events of combat had given way to images of how the war was fought and consulting cover letter what it was fought for, thanks to various military and advances research conference political discourses. The narratives discussed in this essay however, focus on the cultural expressions of the actual nature of war and the more contemporary disciplines that were implemented in order to highlight an ultimate attack on the socially, culturally and politically destructive qualities of conflict. In an analysis of the literary realism of conventional war writing, the American soldier is often deemed as inherently proper and constructed in a typically righteous light. It can be argued that this discourse is limited in vision due to the way in which these novels tend to evade the more difficult and unwelcome issues of war, preferring to dissertation hole neutron phenomenological, ‘make sense’ of the experience. As a consequence, these narratives could realistically apply to any example of conflict such are the conventional methods in terms of style and form, and the way in which they fail to capture the ambiguous realities of war.

The reliance on factual material in an informed account of war also seems inappropriate in that this technique neglects to address fundamental experiences and lived realities of soldiers. The work of Herr, O’Brien and Page in particular, evoke much more vividly the exhilarating honesty of the Vietnam experience in terms of externalising the rock and roll aspect of advances research conference, Vietnam and highlighting diverse elements of hope, power and loss. At the same time, the texts attempt to highlight in powerful terms the development and demise of the individual through the experience of consulting letter, combat, and refuse to lose sight of the very real suffering the conflict caused on a wider level. Even though Herr and O’Brien realise and admit that sometimes the distinction between fact and fiction is in paper conservation research conference occasionally blurred, their success in autobiography of a newspaper capturing the contemporary emotion of Vietnam transcends the idea that informed realism in war writing matters. Ultimately therefore, the writing succeeds as documents which re-evaluate popular ideas by commenting on the more futile and ineffectual nature of battle and the broad consequences of research, it.
