The Best Player for Audiobooks and Podcasts. Although all portable players can play audiobooks and active learning research papers podcasts, few of them can do it well. In this article I suggest, based on my personal experience, what the application, perfect player for audiobooks and learning research podcasts should look like. Audiobooks and healthy lifestyle speech podcasts become very popular medium of information. One cause of such popularity is a fact, that audio material, by learning research its nature, has many advantages over text. However, an important reason for audiobooks spread is the creation of portable audio players. Today, almost any gadget with internal memory and a battery supports audio playback. You can use a mobile phone, a communicator, PDA or a music player to listen to podcast or audiobook. Personally, I enjoy listening to audiobooks and podcasts for many years. After I’ve tried many various devices, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that some of them are far more appropriate for this purpose.

Although there’s obvious progress in portable players’ development, it seems that, in flim review, case of audiobooks, many modern features actually degrade player’s usability. Touch controls, big color screens and small buttons are good for watching video, but when it comes to plain audio, these stuff can cause troubles. Player optimization for music playback doesn’t guarantee smooth work with audiobooks either. So, what should the perfect player for audiobooks and podcasts look like? Based on my personal experience, I defined the following must-have features for such a player: Bookmarks support Proper search support Tactile control Large monochrome display with landscape orientation Enough storage capacity Good file browser. Proper bookmarks support is a foundation stone. Learning? Without it, you can’t correctly resume the healthy lifestyle essay speech, playback after a shutdown or a track change – you have to remember files you are listening to active research and current position for every file to restore it later. Needles to say, it’s not very exciting experience, especially in a case of a poorly implemented search (in that case, you’re obliged to hold “fast forward” or “rewind” button for minutes to find the flim review, right position in a large audio file). I distinguish the following types of active research papers bookmarks support: Player correctly resumes audio playback after shutdown.

Player restores position of playback on per-file basis. Player has capacity to add any number of bookmarks for any file. The absolute minimum is a capacity to resume playback where you left off after turning the player off and an internship application letter then on. However, it would be much better if player can store playback position for multiple files. Research Papers? Such an jay gatsby analysis, ability helps a lot when you listen to different books and podcasts at a time (or when you alternate audiobooks with music). These are two kinds of automatic bookmarks support. Support for active learning research manual bookmarking is essay, a different way to resume playback, which has its own pros and papers cons.

The advantages are that you can manually mark a file to quickly return to it later (without searching through a file system), also, you can store multiple bookmarks for the same file. The disadvantage is you have to do more actions by yourself (which is usually error-prone). Which type of bookmarking support is better? It seems that automatic bookmarking is suitable for listening to podcasts (because each podcast is usually represented by only one file), and support for manual bookmarking is a convenient feature for age audiobooks (to remember current files). Certainly, it’s better to have both. Although decent bookmarking support significantly reduces the need for navigation inside audio tracks, there are cases where fast forward and papers rewind functions are still handy. For instance, you can use them to do the index thesis, following: repeat the last sentence; omit an unwanted episode; skip a commercial insertion; find a particular place inside audio file (in case you have no bookmark). Most players have search support, but often the active, speed either too slow or too fast (what is uncomfortable). An adjustable search speed is a partial solution, because any selected speed is constant, while preferable speeds for different action vary. (i. e. you may want a slow speed to repeat a phrase, and a fast one to find a particular episode).

Personally, I prefer the player to have fast forward / rewind acceleration. Format For Writing Application? Acceleration mode increases search speed depending on how long “fast forward” or “rewind” button is research papers, pressed. This gives, on the one hand, means to easily skip small portions of audio, and, on the other hand, a tool for fast navigation inside long tracks. Format Application Letter? Certainly, it’s useful to have an ability to configure acceleration parameters. There’s one important (but often underestimated) characteristic of search functions beside speed issues.

It’s a difference threshold between a button’s hold-down time for track search and track change actions. The larger threshold is, the more likely you are to learning papers choose next or previous track instead of fast-forwarding or rewinding (so you have to select your file again and analysis restore the precise position inside it). Learning Research? No doubt, only healthy essay, a player with clear distinction between search and track change actions can save you from papers, going mad and tearing your hair out. When you listen to age audiobook or podcast it’s likely you have to control your player more frequently than when you listen to music. Speech is a more subtle entity comparing to the music – often you need to active pause the playback for format a moment, repeat the sentence, skip a commercial insertion, raise or lower the volume, change the track, etc… Who wants to bother removing the player from a pocket or interrupting pleasant rest just to active operate a brand-new touchscreen (or a touch wheel)? Tactile control implies the following:

Player has palpable controls (like buttons) for all basic actions. You can easily locate, identify and use all controls by touch, without seeing them. You can operate all controls using one hand only. It’s unlikely to activate any control unintentionally. Good player’s tactile control promotes a smooth and argument essay drinking age enjoyable listening experience. Large monochrome display with landscape orientation. Big enough screen is useful for fast and easy navigation among books, chapters and podcasts.

Landscape orientation of the screen gives more horizontal resolution in active learning papers, order to avoid annoying titles scrolling. Although colors on screen look cool, it’s no surprise that color display is flim review, a pointless feature for pure audio player. Monochrome display, on the contrary, is comfortable for the eyes and has no problems with visibility in a bright light. Why is the player’s capacity important? Usually, a typical audiobook consumes more storage space than an average album of research papers music. Besides, it’s handy to flim review store all chapters of audiobook together.

You can have an incomplete music album and still enjoy it as long as you wish. But, as for audiobook’s chapters, sooner or later you will need every one of them. Personally, I don’t like to update player’s memory every time I’m going to listen to the next part of an active learning papers, audiobook. Also, I have a habit to listen to many audiobooks at a time, and, depending on essay drinking, my mood, to add podcasts or music to my listening. That’s why I consider storage capacity important.

Until recently, player with a lot of storage capacity meant “a big expensive player with hard disk drive”. Active Learning Research? But, fortunately, because of a flash memory prices drop, today we can find handy and inexpensive portable players with 4-16GB flash memory inside. Apparently, such capacity is enough for essay drinking age comfortable listening to audiobooks and podcasts. If you intend to interchange large amounts of audio material, you may also consider using player with memory card slot for removable flash cards (like microSD). Many up-to-date players support removable cards, although such support is often bounded by papers 2GB or 4GB card limitation. Some players show all audio files in jay gatsby essay, a single flat list, what is by no means suitable for listening to audiobooks. To successfully navigate among many audiobooks (and their chapters), player must display an authentic hierarchy of the file system, including directories nested within other directories. Active Learning Papers? It’s better to avoid limits either in the numbers of directories on the same level, or in the level of flim review nesting. Metadata tags (like ID3 tags) are a controversial issue. They can hold additional information about active, audio file beside the content of design thesis engg a filename.

Sometimes that can be useful, but: it is harder to edit tags than the name of file, tags are intended for music and therefore store properties, directly inapplicable to research papers audiobooks and podcasts (such as “artist”, “album”, “genre” and essay so on), displaying of excess metadata requires scrolling, often audio files lack tag information or include incorrect tags. That is why I decided to give up using metadata tags and to store description of audio files only in filenames. Usually, I assign short but meaningful names to podcasts immediately before downloading. It is active learning research papers, up to for writing an internship letter you whether to rely on tags, however, you can avoid a great deal of confusion in active papers, this matter by choosing portable player with optional metadata tags’ usage. There are a few other things to consider when choosing a portable player for audiobooks and podcasts. Player should allow to play audio files by directory structure (don’t reorder them by jay gatsby metadata tags). Active Research Papers? Support for continuous playing through a sequence of format an internship letter directories is essential to handle audiobooks divided in separate folders. There should be no compulsory (always enabled) “fade-in”, “fade-out”, or “cross-fade” features. Obviously, they are not compatible with speech. Player should supports many audio formats (like mp3, wma, ogg, mp4, flac, etc).

Although you can always convert (for example, using MediaCoder) your audio files to learning research supported format, it’s not so convenient task. If you’re going to buy audiobooks with digital rights management (DRM), you must ensure that player supports it. I laid down the basic guidelines for choosing portable player for audiobooks and podcasts. I omitted players features, that don’t exert much special influence on an internship application, listening to audiobooks or podcasts. They are: design of the player (size, shape, weight, color, etc), type of the storage (HDD or flash), type and active learning research papers capacity of a battery, external interface (mini-USB or some proprietary one), speed of essay age files transfer, quality of sound, sound processing capabilities (like equalizer), operating systems support, price. However these features may be still important to you because of learning research a personal preference. All need to be weighed before making a decision. Healthy Lifestyle Speech? That’s why, unfortunately, there’s no perfect player for active learning everyone. As for me, I have five portable audio players (not counting mobile phone, PDA and Sony Reader), and all of them are far from ideal (from my point of view, of course). Format For Writing? Next player I am going to buy is one with Rockbox support. Rockbox is an open source firmware for many digital audio players.

It aims to be considerably more functional and efficient than stock firmwares while remaining easy to active learning research papers use and customizable. At the moment, it looks like it’s the index design engg, only software that good for listening to audiobooks and podcasts. Everything you need to use Rockbox is to have a supported player. I hope the information will be useful to you. If you have suggestions for extending or improving the article, feel free to contact me. I am not very tech savy, but like to use MP3 player for learning papers podcasts and book downloads from the library.(Being retired I cannot afford to buy books from audible.com etc.) I have been using a Creative Zen V+ (4GB) for 2 years now and have listened to about 65 books on this player. I am very happy with it except that it are that it crashes if I try to fast forward too much and if I use the pause feature for too long it reverts to the beginning of the track. I belong to three book clubs and most of my friends would like a simple player that bookmarks easily so you can switch between books or pause easily and return to format for writing your place.

I would also like a sleep function so that it would turn off after some set minutes. It must also be easy to fast forward or reverse. Do you have any suggestions as to what manufacturers we should look?? If you’re looking for research good bookmarks support, I recommend you to check http://www.rockbox.org/. It is a powerful and very configurable alternative firmware for many mp3 players. It supports bookmarks, sleep-timer and plenty of other advanced features. The only drawback is that you have to for writing an internship manually install the firmware on supported player (it’s not so hard to do). So, which brands, models, etc. come close to this ideal ? Thanks in advance, Jim Spencer.

It seems that Rockbox is the best solution at the moment. Thus you can try these models: http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/TargetStatus. I lack any knowledge on this subject; the only thing I do know is that I have restarted by exercise regimen, listen to learning research papers cd audio books in index thesis chemical engg, the car and would like to do the same as I’m exercising. I would like some recommendations for active papers some/a basic model that I won’t get so frustrated using that I’ll end up not using at all! Would appreciate any or all comments. FYI: … While I agree that RockBox is an awesome solution for for writing an internship letter people listening to active learning research papers MP3 audiobooks, it will unfortunately not help those of us using DRM protected WMA audiobooks similar to most of the titles available from our public libraries via Overdrive.

As per the Rockbox website FAQ (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GeneralFAQ#Will_Rockbox_play_WMA_files) “It is jay gatsby essay, very unlikely that Rockbox will be able to play protected WMA files.” and research can attest to this personally as I have loaded it onto my Sansa e260. If not for this caveat, Rockbox would be the lifestyle speech, perfect Audiobook environment IMO. Active Learning? If your Audiobooks are not DRM protected, I agree with Pavel 100% Pavel, I applaud your well thought out and discussed thoughts on analysis, this subject – but since many of us use the free downloadable audiobooks from the library, (overdrive) which are not rockbox compatable – that leaves us with discussing the active learning research papers, current retail selection. My CREATIVE Zen V Plus recently died (second to do so in 2 years) and I need a replacement that does not simply “resume” as Apple Ipod does. All of the Creative MP3 players have bookmark capability however they will not automatically continue playing the rest of the playlist after you have listened to the bookmarked track.

I am looking for format an internship application suggestions. There is a Sony Walkman CD player that has a bookmark feature. I wouldn’t listen to CDs without it. I also have a Sony Walkman Mp3 player which plays all the cds and mp3 discs. This is a terrific little player and it beats my little tiny mp3player because it saves my place and I don’t have to spend 2 hours searching through files. Active Research? my tiny mp3 player sucked every file on my computer and I don’t know how to jay gatsby essay get a single book without it downloading the learning papers, entire computer everytime I plug it up to charge it. It also won’t play my self-recorded stuff off the flim review, computer. I prefer either a tape player or cd at research the moment. Thanks for the article, Pavel. Format An Internship? All the ideas are very true.

I, too, love audiobooks and active research papers podcasts and listen to format an internship them a lot both for active learning entertainment and for learning foreign languages. I’ve been happily using a quite simple and inexpensive Cowon U2 (http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/cowon-iaudio-u2-1gb/1707-6490_7-31129769.html) player for index thesis chemical more than 5 years now, and I must say, it’s IDEAL for audiobooks. It works without a problem with the folder structure, there are bookmarks (one per active learning research, file, but I never needed more), A-B playback, a playlist, configurable search speed, and the user interface is brilliant, simple and intuitive. You can operate it blindly with one hand without taking out of the pocket! Unfortunately, the time came when I really need a replacement – 512 Mb and one playlist isn’t sufficient anymore, as I’m now also using it a lot for format for writing an internship application my work (teaching). And I thought that wouldn’t be a problem, but I find myself in active research papers, big trouble – Cowon has long dropped this model line, their current players are too sophisticated and have sensor controls. I tried ‘Transcend T.sonic 860 8Gb’ – quite a nice piece of hardware, but with horrible folder structure navigation, horrible bookmarks implementation, horrible A-B playback. Jay Gatsby Analysis? The features are there, but they are unusable for my purposes. For example, if I start playing a file “track56.mp3” from a bookmark – the device plays it and then stops, it never takes me to file “track57.mp3”, it doesn’t even allow me to find out in what subfolder the learning papers, bookmarked “track56.mp3” resides. Is it in for writing application letter, /Coursebook3/Level2/Disk3/ or. is it in active learning papers, /Coursebook1/Level1/Disk14/ – if I don’t remember it – I’m lost for ever!

Pavel, could you name the players that you own that are the flim review, closest to the ideal audiobook mp3 player? (I’m currently thinking about ordering a Sandisk Sansa Fuze and installing Rockbox on learning, it). By trial-and-error method I finally found a player that meets the demands. Healthy Speech? I bought Cowon D2+ 16GB (with 32GB memory card) and active learning research papers use it for both audiobooks and lossless music. – large high-quality touchscreen (2.5 in, 320?240 pixels, 16M colors) – long battery life (up to jay gatsby analysis essay 52 hours for papers audio playback) – expandable memory (up to argument essay drinking age 32GB SD/SDHC/MMC card) – 3 customizable hardware buttons. – standard Mini-USB connector (drag-and-drop file transfer) – outstanding sound quality. – many supported audio formats (MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, WAV, APE) – comprehensive bookmarks support (up to 256 bookmarks, multiple bookmarks per file, proper handling of file sequences) – playback resume after power-off. – dynamic playlist (up to 256 entries) – playback boundaries (all files, folder, single file) – folder browsing (gestures supported) – progress bar with instant navigation.

– bonus features: video, skins, flash. – dimensions (78 ? 55.4 ? 16.6 mm) and learning papers weight (91 g) – not enough hardware buttons (3 instead of 5) – hardware buttons are too small and too close together. – “resume” requires two extra clicks. Cowon D2+ can run Rockbox, but it’s not fully compatible with that firmware. However, it seems that original D2+ firmware has everything you need for comfortable listening to audiobooks, podcasts and music. Thanks for the info!

I was thinking of Cowon D+, but decided that it’s too expensive and an internship not compact enough for me. Maybe I should reconsider. How convenient is it ot operate it ‘blindly’ with one hand in a pocket? Another important point: can you configure D+ so that you can pause (and later – resume) playback with just ONE press of a button without delay (and, ideally, without even the learning research papers, screen lighting up)? I need to essay drinking pause a lot and I having a precise control over it is a must, plus I wouldn’t like to learning research drain the batterry with all these pauses. On second thoughts I added a few more entries to the “cons” list above. D2 is definitely a little bit too large and heavy and it’s hard to locate its buttons ‘blindly’. Although player can’t resume playback after power-off with just one press of design thesis chemical button, it has a high capacity-battery, so you can simply pause playback (no screen flashes) without turning the player off (battery life isn’t an active learning papers, issue for D2).

Anyway, I suggest you to try the player for yourself before forming an opinion about age, whether it’s right for you. I’ve got the active learning research, D2 now, and even though it isn’t perfect and many things are annoying, I absolutely can live with them. You mentioned almost all of it’s flaws, another thing is it’s fragility, I can’t even imagine using D2 without the letter, protective leather case. Carrying it around and just using it normally, I would ruin the beautiful touch-screen in no time. And the case of course, makes it even bulkier and even less handy. I also got a Sandisk Sansa Fuze to test. Learning Research Papers? Original firmware doesn’t allow any bookmarking, but with Rockbox installed it is letter, very neat and handy, the active learning research, rotating wheel control is extremely convenient. And the player is very inexpensive! Still, I’m reluctunt to part with the flim review, D2.

It’s over the top for audiobooks, but it’s great if you also love music and active learning use it to speech watch videos (the screen is larger and much better than that of the Fuze). Thx for the info you/ve already provided. Pls advise an MP3 for library books that bookmarks easily. Fast forward and back would be wonderful but doubt an MP3 or WMA player has that feature. I/ve already tried Sansa and now have a SONY walkman which “saves” a place intermittently. Is there an “easy to active learning use” bookmarking MP3 player sold today?

I love to drinking age borrow FREE audiobooks from the library, and until recently I’ve been able to listen to them on a Sony D-EJ011. However, they don’t last forever. Papers? My first one lasted about three years, then I replaced it with one that lasted 18 months, then I was down to less than a year with the subsequent replacements. I was unable to analysis even find one (Sony quit making them) but found a used one that I paid far too much for. It quit after a month. The replacement works — barely — but skips badly. Quality control must be going downhill. I’m looking for active learning papers a portable CD player that I can put in a fanny pack and use to listen to while cleaning littter boxes, loading the jay gatsby analysis essay, dishwasher, lifting weights, etc. Research Papers? And I want one that will resume at flim review the place I stopped listening if I have to active research pause to answer the telephone.

I have Audible, but I have to pay for format for writing an internship books, and the files clutter up my computer (or cloud storage). I tried a Durabrand CD 566, and it pauses and resumes at the same place SOMETIMES but not always. If I’m doing something that requires frequent pauses, I need something a bit smarter. I don’t want to download the CDs to a computer, either. Takes too much time. Boring. Annoying. Any good ideas? I was extremely impressed with your extensive recommendations for readers searching for active research the best way to listen to audiobooks. You gave graciously of your time and expertise, and index I would like to thank you very much!

I only had an MP3 for learning papers music, which my children downloaded onto the unit for me. I am quite new at listening to jay gatsby analysis essay books on tape/cd, but i truly enjoy the active research papers, books when I am sewing and driving. I would like something I can pause for an extended period of time, if need be, and immediate start where I left off when I press play. Also important to me is the lifestyle, search function and last sentence recall. I prefer to learning papers use the application letter, controls by active papers touch, as well. Is it possible to update your article for what is currently available? I can’t thank you enough for your time and attention to this article. Your research into the pros and cons of flim review each feature as they apply to audiobook listening is invaluable. I still use my good old Cowon D2+ for learning research papers music and audio books, despite having Samsung Galaxy Note 3, because “real” buttons are so much better than the touchscreen. However, considering how far mobile phones have advanced since the flim review, time of writing the article, an active learning papers, Android-based smartphone looks like a rather good choice.

Android apps are really flexible, the only problem is format an assignment, touchscreen, but it’s possible to learning research papers use a headest with control buttons, or even standalone buttons. Any ideas?

Learning Research Papers! 3 Tips For Getting A Job At Medidata Solutions. Healthy Lifestyle Essay Speech! The Secret To Networking When You Don#039;t Have Any Time. Active Learning Papers! 3 Ways Emotionally Intelligent Leaders Make The Most Of Online Collaboration. You want a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile that presents you in the best possible light. With all of the emphasis on loading your documents with keywords, accomplishments, and metrics that make the case for you being the perfect fit for the position you’re after, have you overlooked proper punctuation? Some might wonder what the big deal is about punctuation. Surely if you start your sentences with a capital letter and argument drinking age end them with a period, that’s all you need to worry about, right? Unfortunately not.

The text in career documents is often so packed with information that seemingly inconsequential punctuation missteps can distort your meaning, or worse: cause the reviewer to research papers pause in confusion. Argument Essay Drinking! That pause is bad news for you: it may make the reviewer see you as a less-than-attractive candidate, questioning your ability to learning research communicate or pay attention to details, both highly valued skills in today’s workplace. Just as a modern spouse becomes more alluring to proper for writing an assignment a partner by doing the dishes and laundry, using proper punctuation makes you downright sexy to a hiring manager. Both efforts make lives easier for the people who are important to you, so go the active papers extra mile by following these important rules (and do the dishes): In addition to appearing at the beginning of sentences and in section headings, capital letters also signify important words. But using too many “important words” in format an assignment, your documents slows the reader down or seems pretentious. For example, I sometimes see text like this in resumes: “Expertise in Human Resources, Training, and Recruiting” Try: “Expertise in human resources, training, recruiting” instead. Research Papers! Other than proper names like your own name or the names of products, you will rarely need to capitalize words that don’t appear at the beginning of a line or sentence. Argument! You’ll also want to capitalize your own job title above each position listed on active learning papers your resume. However, if you reference someone else’s job title in your career documents, the flim review general rule is that it is papers, only capitalized when the person#8217;s name follows (Vice President Joe Smith) not when merely referring to the position (as in “reporting to for writing the vice president”).

Of course, every rule tends to have its exceptions, and there are a few for capitalization. However, these are good to start with. Use hyphens for active research compound adjectives that precede a noun, such as “client-focused approach” or “full-time employees.” And if you have two adjectives that modify the for writing an internship letter same base word, use a hyphen after the first, as in “mid- and senior-level management.” Do not use a hyphen in a compound adjective if the first word ends in –ly, as in “highly qualified candidate.” Semicolons can either separate two independent clauses when the second clause is not directly related to the first, or they can be useful when you want to learning research list items that already include a comma. For example, “Proficient in software including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; CorelDRAW; and Adobe Photoshop.” Colons are used to join two independent clauses when the second clause is essay speech, directly related to the first. The most common usage in career documents is for lists, as in “Proficient in the following software: MS Excel, Word, and research papers PowerPoint.” There’s fierce debate between those who advocate using serial commas (putting a comma before the jay gatsby final “and” in learning research, a series) and essay age those who don’t. The best practice for resumes is to use serial commas, as they can really make your career documents easier to understand.

This is especially true when you list series of research items where two things may be grouped together (think: sales and design thesis marketing). But even sentence construction like “Facilitate mock interviews, identify position and tailor interview questions” may cause the active research reader to jay gatsby essay stumble. At first read, it may sound like the learning candidate is flim review, responsible for identifying a position and identifying someone who tailors clothes! So my advice is to avoid ambiguity by learning papers, always using serial commas in career documents. The current convention is to use one space after a period, not two.

Same goes for colons. I know, I know. If you grew up learning to type on an IBM Selectric, back in the stone ages like I did, this is a hard habit to break. But, if you keep using two spaces, you’ll look as antiquated as the chemical typewriter. Trust me, knowing these six punctuation tips will make you a real turn on to an employer. Now that you’ve reviewed some of the punctuation rules that you’ll want to research be aware of, I’ll share the most important rule of all: however, you choose to use punctuation throughout your career documents, do it consistently! Even more jarring than not following proper punctuation rules is following them only some of the essay speech time.

Of course, these rules may change depending on active learning the document you may be writing. Or, if you have a profession (like journalists do) that demands adherence to a specific style guide, like AP, Gregg, or Chicago#8230; Hot, I know. ;-) For a more in-depth look at analysis essay, punctuation, I recommend checking out Susan Whitcomb’s book Resume Magic . Perceptions on the effectiveness of active learning strategies | Journal

Eating yourself: We consume identity through food? It was one of the pioneers of French gastronomy writing, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, who penned the now famous observation: ‘Tell me what kind of active learning research, food you eat, and I will tell you what kind of man you are.’ This was a more opinionated version than that which is found in the Bible, to paraphrase Corinthians ‘your body is a temple’. On the other side of the argument essay age world Buddha was providing similar advice: ‘ keep the body in good health ’. This insight presents as a human truism; it is reasonable to surmise that from the beginning of time, primordial man would have been able to link good food with health (I know this does not reconcile evolution with the current obesity epidemic). Importantly, there is a difference between recognising that what you eat is what you are and learning, that what you eat constructs who you are. We symbolically consume identity through our food and drink choices – more specifically, by flim review what we don’t eat or drink. Eating is an intensely personal act. What we eat communicates to others our beliefs, cultural and papers, social backgrounds and experiences.

In the flim review western world, testament to how we think about who we are, increasingly we join fashionable dietary tribes, where we temporarily graze within before moving onto greener fields. Who hasn’t tried on for size at some time being a: vegetarian, paleo, vegan, piscatarian, halal, Atkins, etc.; or my favourites, those that just hold their knife and papers, fork high and find momentary solace in jay gatsby essay, being a flexitarian? All of learning research papers, these dietary choices have something in common; they are all opposed to being an omnivore. As apes, even very civilized ones, we are omnivores. Index Design Thesis Chemical Engg. In its broadest term, an omnivore will eat anything. Uniquely perhaps amongst animals, while we can digest the two main food groups (animals and/or plants), we have choice. All of the active research dietary-tribes above are defined by their rejection of some aspect of for writing, ‘everything’. There are many reasons why we exclude foods from our diet, from basic health needs to deep cultural and religious beliefs.

What is interesting is the role that food plays in constructing our identities. This is across psychological, anthropological thinking, and active, also semiotically, in how the for writing application letter meaning is expressed. Something that all humans share is active, also something that we use to differentiate ourselves on a daily basis. ‘Food is our common ground, a universal experience’. Different ways of cooking the topic. It’s easy to think when reviewing literature on eating that there are too many chefs in the kitchen.

Many disciplines have their leading thinkers in the subject area and there is a tantalising array of papers to look at. Essay Speech. With this in active papers, mind, I’m going to stick to some of the format papers that are more topical to what I’m currently looking at. Even a quick and cursory exploration is useful to contextualise how food relates to identity. Food is a highly condensed social fact. It is elementary that food is research papers, more than something alimentary. Semioticians have likened the use of food in society and culture to language. As Roland Barthes, suggests. ‘When he (modern consumer) buys an item of flim review, food, consumes it, or services it, modern man does not manipulate a simple object in a purely transitive fashion; this item of foods sums up and transmits a situation; it constitutes an information; it signifies’. This structuralist perspective was developed further by Claude Levi-Stauss, who identified that food can be conceived as a language that expresses social structures and cultural systems. He posits that food “must not only be good to eat, but also good to think (with)”. Active. I have discussed some of his influential approaches in flim review, the preceding post.

As early as 1899, Thorstein Veblen in his work ‘ Conspicuous Consumption’ noted that food connotes class and privilege. Subsequent studies have painted this picture in deeper relief. The sociologist Norbert Elias identified the symbolic meaning of foods performing a significant role in determining social power and status relationships. Research. Likewise, Pierre Bourdieu has suggested that social stratification and class are defined by taste. In an influential series of works Mary Douglas has looked at food as eating codes that define an individual’s place within a society and serve to actively maintain social order. We find that the structure of healthy speech, society closely correlates to the nature of status foods:

Ethnographic research has revealed that an emphasis on quantity of food and elaboration of common staples is found mostly in active research papers, societies without strong social stratification, while an emphasis on quality and style is characteristic of societies with institutionalized forms of social ranking. In the healthy lifestyle former context the consumption of luxury foods is used primarily to create or enhance social bonds, in the latter to create or enhance exclusivity and distance. Jack Goody provides further insight about the social organisation of food. He has been able to active research papers, illustrate that societies where there is little lifestyle difference between members, special occasions are characterised by flim review the quantity of learning, food. In comparison, in hierarchical societies where you tend to find sub-cultures, it is typical to thesis chemical engg, find quality and active learning research, foreignness in food as the healthy lifestyle speech differentiators of status. A characteristic of societies with social equality is that there tends to be a more equitable distribution of food. It was the improved availability of learning papers, food that was the main driver of the evolution of haute cuisine and fine dining, as the upper-echelons of society moved to flim review, further differentiate themselves from the masses. High status foods are characterised by rarity, cost, labour time, prominence of animal proteins and non-nutritional meanings and associations.

At the same time there was shift towards individuality and the separation of learning papers, classes, which resulted in eating innovations such as tables and cutlery. This presents another paradox in how different cultures perceive eaters. Analysis Essay. Body image, in relation to food, is a way of creating more social meaning. Active Learning Research Papers. Where there was a shift away from status-meals defined by argument drinking age quantity, in cultures where there is an abundance of food thinness is associated with privilege and status. Whereas, we find that in societies where food is scarce, there is the perception that being overweight is a status marker. ‘Food can be used to mark and create relations of equality, intimacy or solidarity or, instead, to uphold relations signalling rank, distance or segmentation. This can be illustrated by looking at active research papers the use of food to communicate different types of class through consumption’.

The differences in class were brilliantly highlighted and engg, exploited in this Australian Meat Pie advertisement. Another example of this was in the broadcast on papers, NPR’s ‘Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell me’. Where the hosts of the show comment on a shared insight to format an assignment, NPR’s audience: PETER SAGAL “But first, great news: according to research, a new study, listeners to NPR News are better informed than people who get their news anywhere else. This is true. They asked everyone a series of questions about things, and NPR listeners got more of the questions right than say cable TV news watchers.

Of course, the questions were a little slanted”. KASELL: “To the best of your knowledge, which wine pairs best with a Prius?” Adrienne Lehrer discussed how this symbolism is co-opted by politicians to bolster their ‘working man’ appeal. This has left the argument essay age American voters with a quadrennial entertainment watching potential leaders of the free world struggle with some of the messiest foods that are even called ‘sliders’. Politicians do this public ritual to literally digest some blue-collar credibility. Pierre Bourdieu makes the observation that ‘Taste classifies, and it classifies the classifier’. He points to the denial of ‘lower’ forms affirms those that have ‘taste’: ‘That is why art and cultural consumption are predisposed, consciously and deliberately or not, to fulfil a social function of legitimating social differences’.

Politicians can step into the majority’s lives by sharing this daily bread and breaking these codes by stepping off the research culinary podium. This concept of food being a social marker of class is not limited to the western cultures; it is also present in eastern cultures. Food: “… was elevated at an early period [in China] from necessity to format an assignment, art, from sustenance to elegance; the learning research papers subsequent high cultural status assured that food would remain a key ingredient in for writing an internship application letter, the language and structure of literature and art”. It is worth noting that food across many cultures is a form of aesthetic satisfaction. Speaking to active, all of our senses, food words have become powerful metaphors in how we think about the world.

Think of a half-baked idea; you cram in knowledge for an exam; you are digesting this blog, etc. Ethnic and Cultural Symbolism of Food. Sidney Mintz has shown how these symbolic meanings change with different cultural, ethnic and class considerations. Food, geography or place and identity are intertwined from a symbolic perspective. Wenying Xu makes the jay gatsby important perspective that food is one of the ways that we engage with, and understand, other cultures: ‘’Food operates as one of the key cultural signs that structure people’s identities and their concepts of others’ . Bell and Valentine go into this definition in more detail, stating that national identity is learning, linked to food: “The history of any nation’s diet is the history of the nation itself, with food fashion, fads and fancies mapping episodes of colonialism and migration, trade and exploration, cultural exchange and boundary making” Ethnographically we find that ethnic identities are expressed and maintained through dietary choices. The food that we eat can strengthen ties to your ethnicity on a day-to-day basis and it can also reflexively reinforce a sense of identity when you are in another culture. Jay Gatsby Essay. English seeking fish and chips in Greece, Australians hunting for Vegemite on Toast in Asia, and Americans looking for burgers everywhere, are examples of this identity reinforcement on holidays. While I’m focusing on food here, coffee, tea and active, alcohol are also used in similar ways.

While not a focus here, it should be noted that in the fluid global world of exchanged culinary traditions, foods are constantly reimagined and reinvented to flim review, suit the local culture. Often these can be cultural definitions; consider the similarities and difference between the croque – monsieur to active research papers, a toasted sandwich; a meat pie to an assignment, a beef wellington; or Japanese tempura to Portuguese battered fish. You don’t have to be the active learning research papers originator of jay gatsby essay, a concept just to active papers, have a unique version that bonds a group of people. Consider the Cronut as a recent invention that speaks to NYC but blends donuts and croissants from different cultures, unified in a glaze of American sugar. “The destiny of nations depends on the manner in which they feed themselves.” Food can also speak to a political identity on a cultural level. Negatively, we stereotype nations with slurs evoking their foods; the French are frogs, Germans are Krauts, Mexicans are Beaners, etc. However, we also hold in high reverence the flim review influence of cuisines from around the world and what they contribute to the global table.

The presence of McDonalds in research papers, Moscow is symbolic on a broader scale, representative of the ‘triumph of capitalism over proper, communism’ Noting that America’s recent thaw in relations with Vietnam has led to active research papers, ‘A McDonald’s doorman gesture during the opening ceremony of the country’s first McDonald’s restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City on February 8, 2014’. How has individual consumption changed? “Identity can be defined as the age individual’s identification and belongingness to particular social groups on the basis of differences socially sanctioned as significant” In a more global world, cultural and ethnic boundaries are increasingly becoming more permeable. Food in particular is available in more ethnic diversity. Here, Anthony Giddens has suggested that food should move from a consumption model at a social group to one that reflects the active research individual consumption: A paradox seems to healthy essay speech, emerge from this debate: it appears to conclude that diets become more different at the same time that they become more similar.

One way of research, reading this paradox is the index design thesis shift from ‘model’ to ‘style’. While ‘consumption model’ is a concept that refers to a social group (a community, a nation), style refers to the individual behaviour. The individual, in active, his/her food consumption behaviour, loses any reference to any objective belonging, to a family, a social group, a class, a community. He/she is driven only by format for writing his/her subjective choice, of an ideological, hedonistic nature. Style choices are negotiated among a diversity of options, in a plurality of contexts and authorities (Giddens 1991: 5) This speaks to the societal shift from social classes that are defined by research birth or later the type of job you have, to a post-industrial society where individuals are defined by ideology or by what they consume. This thinking is related to what Ulrich Beck defines as the individualisation process of flim review, reflexive modernity. The reflexivity of active learning research, modern social life consists in the fact that social practices are constantly examined and reformed in the light of incoming information about those very practices, thus constitutively altering their character . . . only in the era of modernity is the revision of convention radicalised to jay gatsby analysis essay, apply (in principle) to all aspects of human life. . . . (Giddens) Beck believes that self-identity is determined more by lifestyle where people are presented a diversity of choices in all areas of their lives.

Beck’s conception is that the self is not a passive identity that is active learning papers, determined by external influences. The self is a reflexive project sustained through the routine development and sustainment of a coherent narrative of self-identity: our biographies (Giddens). Scott Lash identifies that in lifestyle essay, this context ‘individuals must innovate rules in a bricolage of their own identities’. Learning Research. However, while we are more likely to identify ourselves as being individuals, as creative as we get, it is index design thesis chemical, our social interaction that regulates this sense of identity. Identity without context is meaningless. The current foodie culture and diversity of foods in western cultures has made food a much more democratic facet of modern societies. As a style, it is something that consumers are increasingly food-literate and empowered to learning research papers, comment on. As the argument age food critic, Frank Bruni observes. “Food is an learning research papers aspect of culture that, because everyone necessarily participates in it to proper format for writing an assignment, some degree, is more egalitarian than, say, ballet, or opera, or even theatre. Learning Research. It’s easier and less intimidating to join the fray and weigh in with an opinion”

Contributing to this are the design chemical engg swathe of entry points into research papers the world of food for the modern consumer: celebrity and contestant cooking shows, foodie magazines, websites and food festivals. Here everyone is invited to voyeuristically or personally participate in a range of foods that we might never eat. Like sports, you don’t have to play to be a member of the format letter club. Food choices are central to the evolution of humans from active learning research papers apes. One of the most useful perspectives here was proposed by Claude Fischler, who introduced the concept of the ‘ incorporation principle’ . He starts by defining that humans are biologically omnivores. Proper Format An Assignment. Being an omnivore is a paradox, in that we need novelty and active learning research papers, are driven to explore new foods, but are also fearful and reluctant to for writing an assignment, try new foods because they represent a risk. The ‘incorporation principle’ is defined: ‘To incorporate a food is, in both real and imaginary terms, to incorporate all or some of its properties: we become what we eat. Incorporation is a foundation for identity’.

Furthermore, on a broader level: ‘Thus, not only does the eater incorporate the properties of active, food, but, symmetrically, it can be said that the absorption of a food incorporates the eater into a culinary system and therefore into the group which practises it, unless it irremediably excludes him. Food taboos, a favourite theme in anthropology, operate at this level: in order for lifestyle a species to be defined as taboo, it must have been already implicitly classified as food. If the forbidden food were not edible, there would be no point in forbidding it’. The incorporation principle is another way of saying: who you are, is what you eat. When we consider the social role of food, it is important that societies do influence and teach us what we can and can’t eat: ‘‘social factors may be particularly important in influencing the development of preferences for foods’ (Rogers and active research, Blundell). An example of social food taboos was documented by Mary Douglas who detailed the taboos and social factors that influence the preparation of meat in the Bible that differentiates the ‘people of the book’. “Never have we been so free. Never have we felt so powerless.” Food choices for healthy lifestyle an individual are not fixed, naturally they develop and change over time; they are informed by many different personal preferences, resources, identity needs and research, socio-cultural factors.

One of the prominent trends of modern western societies is the shift towards ethical consumption in the form of artisan, organic, local etc. Our food is safer and jay gatsby analysis essay, our diets are more diverse than ever before; production methods are becoming increasingly sustainable, clean and efficient; and we are constantly becoming better at active learning papers protecting biodiversity. Bisogni, et al. have suggested here that diet and identity are mutually constitutive. However, an ethical issue arises from the contradiction in the continued success of industrialised food economies of essay drinking age, societies to also achieve the individual goal of ‘ethical’ shopping. However, while many consumers’ mindsets might project into this way of thinking, this is not supported by what is selling in research papers, the marketplace. Mass produced food is selling very well. These are muddied waters though. When big retail chains are selling organic products, this line is becoming increasingly blurred and confused, leading some to question if there are really ‘alternative’ ways of format for writing application letter, eating. This has been framed with critiques of neoliberalism – which has been described as ‘capitalism with the gloves off’ . Many of the western democracies are characterised as being neoliberal. Neoliberal governments by definition have been consistently retreating from the basic needs provisioning and regulation of some areas; correspondingly corporations and NGO’s have been filling the gaps. In this context, the rise of individual determinism around ethical consumer behaviour constructs roles for us as ‘citizen consumers’.

Here we have the ‘freedom’ to vote with our money; to balance the competing ideologies of learning, self-interested consumerism with social and ecological citizenship. There is healthy lifestyle essay, a dissonance when we are not in balance here. Johnson rightly asks ‘How did we get to the point where consumers are responsible for “saving” the world by shopping?’ Slavoj Zizek’s has framed this type of learning papers, behaviour as a ‘pseudoactivity’ where our behaviour is not to ensure change but to ensure that the status quo is maintained; it’s a way of postponing the moment when we really have to think about doing something. He suggests this, like other behaviour such as recycling, are just ways of restitution for our collective crimes. “Food makes the eater: it is therefore natural that the eater should try to make himself by eating” It is relatively easy to see there is a degree of letter, consensus that food is learning research papers, more than something that fuels and sustains us. Food is important for constructing and sustaining our identities, social boundaries and cultural differentiation.

Moving forward, the interesting thing to keep an eye on is our use of food as reflexive behaviour to changes in thesis engg, society and active learning research papers, culture. New trends and subcultures are likely to arise as we continue to experiment collectively with our own individual identity recipes. If we are eating ourselves into identity, an exploration of one of the oldest food taboos is informative to end on. In distinctly gory Greek myth there is the cautionary tale of Erysichthon of Thessaly. A king of Thessaly ordered Demeter’s entire grove of trees to format for writing letter, be cut down and in the process, one of learning research, her dryads (guardian spirit) was killed in the felling.

Demeter responded to the Dryads curse by entreating Limos (the Greek version of famine) to plague him. The more he ate the jay gatsby essay hungrier he got. In the end he eats himself through hunger. Like many Greek myths, they appear strangely prophetic for modern society. Many of our contemporary ‘ethical’ shopping behaviours are to construct a vision of ourselves, as Erysichthon, before the grove was cut down. We are obsessed with the pre-modern past in contemporary culture. Learning. However, we still find ourselves blighted with an almost insatiable hunger. Perhaps a concern is that Zizek is right and we are the pseudoactivity of consuming ‘ethical’ choices, which is not a meaningful to solution to modern consumption contradictions. We fear empty calories in thesis, a healthy diet; perhaps for our identity projects we fear empty-symbolism just as much. It is hard to construct identity on illusions.

Hollywood reflects back to us positive and negative reflections on how we perceive ourselves. Learning Research. Following the discussion that food is as much about the consumption of meaning as nutrition, it is argument age, informative that we fine Zombies everywhere as themes in learning, literature, movies and TV. Zombies are the antithesis of the entire premise of this blog – you are what you eat. As Zombies, you don’t die, you exist dehumanised; you lose your freedom, personal sovereignty, individuality, existing in alienation as a parody of the modern condition, indiscriminately consuming with no purpose. A thought for food. I come from letter Italian ethnicity where food is a social focus and papers, usually, fresh, hearty and not too difficult to format for writing application, prepare. I live in America by a major city.

Most often when I walk into any grocery chain store, I smell nothing. Even ‘vine ripe’ tomatoes are wrapped in plastic. Honestly, I don’t always trust what I’m eating now and I have migrated to shopping more often at an organic store. Here I’ve found a higher level of knowledge of the products they sell and yes, a belief system. I’m not as quite impassioned, but it seems to help my trust level because I’m getting information and explanation. However, there is an added cost factor that caters to a higher economic group as mentioned in your piece. I also suspect that some of the real problems we see today such as a rise in ADHD etc. has to have some environmental link (food being an aspect) if not solely a genetic factor. Sometimes, I feel pretty confused about research what and what not to eat in order to for writing an assignment, stay healthy. I don’t think I’m alone in this feeling.

There are a couple of active, things in what you say cinzia8. Because of the industrialisation of food production, some fresh produce are actually frozen for up to a year – have a look at http://bit.ly/1t5Bv3R for some of the flim review tricks they do. Tomatoes in particular loose their aroma, which is papers, much of their taste. You may know already but tomatoes grow like weeds. I started growing my own a few years ago http://bit.ly/tomat023233 is a really easy way. You are right about your concerns. If you read about nutrition its enough to make anyone macroneurotic. The costs of buying organic or from farmers markets are steep.

Best options are to grow some of your own. Thanks for reading. Such a great article and blog with very good insights! Thanks #128578; Thanks for the feedback – I’m glad you found some worth reading. Very worthy and insightful article……thanks for sharing your light!! i enjoyed n learned a lot reading it word by word..line by line..thanks! #128578; Thanks for the feedback Sujata, it’s great that you found something interesting in the thinking. Interesting read, well authored. thanks for the feedback jostaz.

Very interesting and educative….thanks for sharing your thoughts on the topic. I wanted to know your thoughts on how do you think globalisation is impacting food identity. Hi Swati, appreciate the feedback. Globalisation is an interesting lens to look at this topic through. Format For Writing Letter. There are a range of different experiences from the cultures that are driving it, to those that are being drawn into its currents. Active Learning Papers. From a western perspective, food-tourism used to be a more prominent driver of experiencing the unknown ethnic ‘other’. These days the democratisation and more affordable travel, the role of the application letter internet in sharing cuisines, the role of blogging on the centralized de-centralisation of food knowledge in communities, increased movement of trade, patterns of global food fashions, eg. superfruits to gluten-free super-grains, etc. are all increasing the exchange of food and cuisines. As this tended to merge a bit, we’re starting to see a move away form ‘hybrid’ or fusion styles of research papers, cooking, to authentic and local styles.

As ‘place’ via localism, heirloom foods, etc is becoming the an important identity marker against jay gatsby essay a homogenous world. Guess the great thing is that we get a lot of yummy food. When using food to represent any culture world wide, America is perhaps something of an oddity. Many of the active papers foods that americans are often labeled with, pizza, donuts, hamburgers and french fries either originated in another nation or were created by foreign settlers. Argument Essay Drinking Age. Even the hamburger while an active american creation, is rumored from getting it’s name from people from Hamburg (a city in analysis essay, Gemany) naming the active learning research sandwich after themselves. For Writing. Perhaps the best way to define food that helps shape America is by looking at how they are “amercanized”. When going to a fast food resteraunt like Taco Bell, anyone familier with true mexican cuisine can quickly see how burritos and tacos were given the american treatment from all the fats, sugars ad other additives we use. Dressed up to look much more appealing.

Totally agree that American represents an learning papers ‘oddity’. Considering their cultural clout with globalization, there is a great mixing pot of a transnational ‘western’ cuisine that is a hybrid of many cultures. The main drivers are the analysis ability to commercially deliver novelty and agaisnt the learning research papers need for food fashions. Analysis. You can also include, fortune cookies, General Tso’s chicken, sushi (USA style), Italian Focaccia, Portuguese fried chicken, Indian Balti’s, etc. as examples of non-Authentic foods. The reality is that in many western cultures is research papers, that you don’t sell Italian food, you sell ‘italiancity’ which is a semiotic construct not a cuisine. Similar to how Taco Bell, doesn’t reflect the real Mexico. We consume the stylised cultural experience that is being branded by format for writing big business. Thanks for commenting, appreciate your reading the article. Fabulous article.

I like your blog title and active papers, your blog offerings. Looking forward to index design thesis engg, reading more of your posts. Thanks for the positive feedback kvjinc ! Dear author, this article inspired me a lot because ? have been trying to write my thesis about food and culture. I will be very happy if you can send me the name of the learning research books or articled you used as a source for this article. Thank you do much!

Hi dila most of the for writing an assignment work referenced is hyperlinked if you view it directly from the website. Let me know if there is anything specific you were looking for. Good luck and thanks for learning reading. Reblogged this on BY*. I will soon be teaching in argument, a 2 week programme for learning fresh grad students where they will grapple with the essay drinking theme of identity.

This will be in India and students will be from various diverse cultures within India. I was thinking of learning papers, Food as one frame where they will look at construction of analysis essay, identity. While searching for active papers useful links I came across your site and was delighted with some of the format links you share. Might just use some of them in my discussions with students. Active Research Papers. So, thank you for putting this post up. Hi pallavi. Essay Drinking. The site is open source by design.

Does Active Learning Work? A Review of the Research - Prince - 2004

How to Keep Good Teachers Motivated. This week, Education World's Principal Files team chats about what they do to keep good teachers motivated. What special things do they do to inspire teachers to keep learning and improving their skills? What do they do to keep up staff morale and make their schools fun places to work? Our principal team shares their best ideas for encouraging teachers to keep on plugging. Included: More than two dozen practical ideas for keeping teachers motivated. Given the active learning research state of school budgets, it is jay gatsby analysis essay, extremely difficult for most principals to learning papers do substantial things to motivate and inspire teachers.

But sometimes little things can make an even bigger difference! That's why Education World recently asked our Principal Files principals to share with us some of their best ideas for keeping teachers motivated. Index Design Thesis Chemical. As usual, our principals responded with dozens of practical ideas. This month's P-Files question reminded principal Les Potter about Robert Greenleaf, author of Servant Leadership. Greenleaf's idea is that administrators need to serve the worker, explained Potter. At our school we try to active learning do that. We work hard at argument drinking making things less difficult and complicated.

We try to cut down the amount of active learning research papers, paperwork our faculty must do, limit the number of staff meetings, streamline procedures. Administrators at Potter's school try to show teachers every day that they care in many ways. We have an open-door policy, they see us picking up trash and cleaning cafeteria tables, we arrive on campus before they do and we are here when they leave, and we do not have designated parking or other perks sometimes associated with management, Potter said. Administrators always have to put aside their own issues and do what is best for students and flim review staff in learning research a caring and sensitive way. Flim Review. We try not to say no to teachers, and we always treat them as adults. Principal Tony Pallija agrees. He and the rest of his administrative team try to do lots of special things for research papers the entire staff -- from special little gifts to Cookie Day. We try to pretend we are at IBM -- we treat everyone as a professional and argument essay we celebrate whenever we can, said Pallija. The material things are nice, but I have a motto that I try to active learning research live by each day: My job as principal is to make the teacher's job easier, better, so they can teach and students can learn.

Developing a positive school climate is critical to healthy essay speech an effective school, added Les Potter. Morale is a very tentative issue. You can do 99 things right and make one mistake that will shoot morale forever. RECOGNIZING THOSE WHO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND! All teachers yearn for active learning reassurance that they are doing a good job. Thesis. Most principals recognize teachers' efforts by offering positive feedback -- both publicly and papers privately. Index Chemical Engg. Weekly memos or e-mails, and regular staff meetings, are the perfect forums for recognizing special contributions that teachers or other staff members make.

Principal Jeff Castle includes such recognitions in learning staff memos and during a special celebration portion of each month's faculty meeting. He also makes a special point of spotlighting efforts teachers make to engg develop projects that involve students across grade levels or with other schools. Research Papers. Castle hopes those special recognitions encourage others to design thesis consider projects that extend learning outside the walls of individual classrooms. With all teachers have to do, motivation is the key to keeping them focused and feeling worthy, principal Larry Davis told Education World. Learning Research. Davis reports that at flim review each month's staff meeting at active his school two teachers are awarded the Golden Apple for their above-and-beyond efforts. For Writing Letter. The neat thing about the learning Golden Apple is that the teachers select its recipients!

Each of the winners of this month's Golden Apples are responsible for passing on argument essay drinking the award to another worthy teacher at next month's meeting. Many principals try to leave a little extra money in research papers the budget to recognize outstanding efforts with small personal gifts such as prepaid phone cards or store gift certificates. Recently, one principal gave a phone card to for writing an internship application a teacher who stepped in without being asked (because the principal was out of the building) and took over an after-school program for a teacher who was stuck in a dentist's chair having a tooth pulled. Not every school can budget for research a faculty retreat, but such an effort can go a long way toward building collegiality and format for writing an internship application letter morale. At The American School in learning research papers London, lower school principal Julie Ryan has fond memories of a two-day retreat held an hour north of the city two years ago. Parts of the conference center where the healthy speech retreat took place dated back to the time of Elizabeth I (16th century).

Retreat activities included a mix of socialization and team-building activities; analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the active learning research papers school's culture; and creating essential agreements about how we want to work together, Ryan told Education World. STICKY NOTES, OLYMPIC GAMES, TV STARS, MINI GRANTS, MORE! Principal Teri Stokes tries to observe every teacher at least two times a month. Flim Review. Many of those visits are unscheduled, snapshot stops. Active Learning Papers. Before heading on to the next class, Stokes takes a moment to scribble a positive comment or two on a sticky note. On the way out format of the active research papers room, she sticks that note to the door or the teacher's desk. In addition, Stokes often drops little feel-good cards or inexpensive gifts in teachers' mailboxes or on their desks. One year she provided each teacher with a Beginning-of-the-Year Survival Bag that included odds and ends, each with a special significance. Does this sound like an idea you might want to employ?

If so, you'll find some great ideas for putting together a Teachers' Survival Kit in the Education World article When All Else Fails, Turn to the Survival Kit! Principal Marie Kostick uses a snapshot observation strategy similar to the one Teri Stokes uses. In addition, she takes advantage of format, local television stations that reach out into the community to offers awards such as The Class Act Award or the Excellence in Teaching Award. Kostick nominates members of active papers, her staff who go beyond the call of flim review, duty. Reporters from the television stations come to school to interview the teachers and present them with certificates. Each teacher is then recognized in a TV spot that is active learning, broadcast several times in one week. To build a strong team, principal Phil Shaman held an Educational Olympics at this school one year. Teachers were divided into teams and competed in a variety of events. All events required that team members support each other to complete a task.

Events, planned with the support of his physical education staff, were both athletic (for example, relay events and a team table tennis match in which team members had to alternate hits) and essay non-athletic (such as going through a maze blindfolded). Many states and active research some local school districts offer reward monies for schools whose students show improvements on standardized tests. In some schools, those monies are divided among contributing staff. Jay Gatsby Analysis. In other cases, that money can be used to support additional purchases for the school. At Silver Sands Middle School, staff members voted to set aside a chunk of that money for mini-grants, principal Les Potter told Education World.

Staff members complete a simple form to request a mini grant that will benefit their students. 20 MORE GREAT IDEAS FOR MOTIVATING TEACHERS. Education World's Principal Files principals shared dozens of great ways to papers motivate teachers. So far, we have mentioned just a handful of those ideas. Following is a list of more than 20 additional ideas presented by principals already mentioned above: Plan noon-hour lunches for all staff members several times a year. (Don't leave out the format for writing an internship application paraprofessionals, the school secretaries, or the custodians!) Those lunches can be roving lunches in research which people eat during their regularly scheduled lunch period, or they can be whole-staff lunches that kick off professional development sessions scheduled for proper format the p.m. part of the day. Organize small fundraising activities to raise money for an all-staff holiday or end-of-year banquet. Active Research. For example, several times during the year faculty might be allowed to pay $2 to dress casually for the day. Contact local restaurants, sports franchises, movie houses, arts centers, and essay other businesses to arrange for gifts, gift certificates, tickets, or discount coupons that can be used as special prizes for teachers or coaches who volunteer their time or who go above and beyond. Encourage teachers to seek out professional development courses or workshops. Approve all reasonable requests.

Then get extra mileage out of those sessions: Set aside time during each staff meeting, or arrange a special professional development day, so teachers can share with their peers the learning papers main ideas they learned from each session they attended. Encourage teachers to ask for the instructional supplies they require to facilitate teaching and learning. Argument Essay Age. Provide reasonable requests from the research budget, or enlist local politicians or businesspeople to sponsor or help you track down other needed supplies. Organize a trip to the movies. Have you seen these articles from the essay Principal Files Series? Principals share the courses they wish they had taken before they took the active papers job. Our principal team paints a picture of flim review, how school districts manage finding, training, and retaining substitute teachers. Principals share ways in active learning research papers which they are using data to proper format lead their schools to success. Stuck for ideas for active learning papers effective staff meetings? Looking for ways to make sure everybody is present and flim review interested? Principals share the learning papers joys of the job plus words of encouragement for educators who might be considering the path to the principal's office.

The December holidays can be such a busy time. Instead of adding one more thing to do and one more expense to healthy lifestyle speech the month of December, why not spread around the learning research papers fun? In October, for jay gatsby example, one school held Secret Spook Week. Those teachers who wanted to participate filled out a profile form that asked questions about favorite colors, foods, drinks, hobbies, and so on. Then each participant drew another staff member's profile form and became that person's Secret Spook. Each Secret Spook provided small token gifts for the other person all week long. Learning Papers. The total expenditure for each participant was set at $10. Include on healthy speech each weekly staff memo a quick activity idea that might be tried out in the classroom, a quote related to education, or a short school-related joke. (Note: Each issue of Education World's Weekly Newsletter includes a Last Laugh section with several funny stories and jokes.

Feel free to copy and learning research papers paste them for use in your own weekly memos or parent newsletters.) Send cards to teachers to welcome them back after an illness, celebrate a birthday or another important event, or recognize a special achievement. Add a copy of those special achievements cards to teachers' personnel files. Once a semester, or once a quarter, provide all staff members with a come-late-to-work-no-questions-asked form. (Or give that form to staff members who logged one or no absences in the most recent quarter.) That form represents two hours of argument drinking, time that can be taken at the start or end of the school day for any reason -- from sleeping in to getting a head start on learning research papers the weekend. Flim Review. The only catch is that the active research papers form must be cashed in in advance so arrangements can be made to free an analysis administrator or somebody else to cover the staff member's responsibilities. Little things like this cost no money and demonstrate that administrators are willing to go the active learning extra mile for the folks who work for them. Provide free coffee in essay drinking the teacher's lounge from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day.

Select a Teacher of the Month. Learning. Set aside a special parking space close to the main faculty entrance that is index design thesis engg, marked with a Reserved for the Teacher of the Month sign. To motivate professional development, arrange study groups (perhaps organized by grade level) to read a book or discuss and research a current hot topic. Set up a schedule to active learning ensure that every educator makes at least two visits to other teachers' classrooms or other schools during the year. Arrange coverage for proper format those teachers. You might set up a special arrangement with other schools to open their classrooms to your teachers, but teachers should also be able to make their own arrangements for visitations to classes/schools they have learned about through the grapevine. Feed the active learning research papers teachers! Celebrate the lifestyle essay end of active research papers, a busy week by arranging to format an internship application have the cafeteria staff prepare a special continental breakfast -- beverages and learning research papers muffins, rolls, or coffee cake -- every Friday morning. (Even once a month would be nice!) Don't forget to do something nice for the cafeteria folks a couple times a year. Appoint a teacher to be acting principal when you are out of the building. (This usually convinces them that they love being a teacher!) Make sure that everyone is on flim review a committee that meets regularly and that they have real tasks and opportunities for real input in school-level decision making.

Arrange to have music played (or piped in) during faculty meetings. Music stimulates the brain. Be sure to publicly commend staff members who go above and beyond outside of the school day -- by volunteering to be part of district-wide or state-level committees, for example. Approach the parent-school association, local business partners, Jaycees, or other groups to active research gather materials and labor to accomplish various fix-it projects that the Board of Education is unable to tackle. Organize a social committee to plan events just for fun. One such event might be a monthly Treat-Your-Friends Tuesday. Each month a different group of teachers brings themed food items to share during the day in the teacher's lounge.

During Teacher Appreciation Week hold a daily drawing for argument a 1/2-day off certificate. The principal will cover the learning papers class when you take that time off. For more Teacher Appreciation Week ideas, see a previously published Education World article, Ways to Celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. Make a spot on your weekly memo for drinking a special thank-you or congratulations to individuals or the active papers entire team. For example: Thank you for organizing Red Ribbon Week! Thanks for the extra effort on parent teacher conferences! Thank you to index design the bulletin board fairy who decorated the board in the workroom.
