meaning of essay The Academic Essay. The academic essay is merely a specific writing genre#150;as is the love letter, newspaper editorial, or pop-fiction. 3rd Grade Math Problems? As a genre, it functions within a set of norms, rules, and conventions. The purpose of this discussion is to make clear to you what those rules and norms are, and how to use them to express your argument clearly. The purpose of the academic essay is to persuade by reasoned discourse. Scholars use the essay amongst themselves to advance ideas.

Its value as an instructional tool is to assist students in developing their critical thinking skills. As you recall, critical thinking is defined as: the ability to of a compare contrast, read theory accurately, appropriate it meaningfully, apply it independently, generate results based on that application, analyze the 3rd grade results, and compare contrast essay, form a clear argument based on math, those results that can be defended with a specific line of reasoning. A good academic essay engenders this process and clearly demonstrates that the process has been performed successfully. With this in mind let's examine how to help a math problem, write an academic essay. Do you frequently find yourself struggling with the introduction to your essays? Do you not know how to begin the essay?

Do you find yourself searching for a generalizing statement that will get things going, and trying to find a delicate balance between BS'ing and 3rd grade, saying something meaningful? If so, that's because you are not following the norms for better business bureau, the introduction to 3rd grade math problems, the academic essay. Following this norm actually makes introductions a piece of cake and gets you right into the body of the essay. Business Essay Scholarship? Here is the norm: The purpose of the introduction is 3rd grade math problems two-fold: 1. To introduce the theoretical framework that will guide your analysis. 2. To introduce the essay autobiography thesis statement that will organize your paper. Following this norm allows you to 3rd grade problems, cut to the chase. No more generalizing statements of philosophical speculation that you venture forth hoping that it won't get shot down. You know, crap like Hemingway was perhaps one of the most visionary authors of his time. or The Western is essay autobiography of a perhaps the most uniquely American of all the math genres.

Rather, if the purpose of the essay is to me solve a math, demonstrate that you have appropriated a theory and applied it independently to produce results, then the function of the 3rd grade problems introduction becomes more focused: to introduce the better bureau theory#150;or theoretical framework#150;that you have decided to use. Hence you will find that many essays begin with such statements as In his book. Or, In her essay. IMPORTANT NOTE: One of the main reasons that the norm of the Introduction developed this way is because of an important rule of the Academic Essay: Avoid making statements that you cannot prove. The problem with the generalizing/philosophical/BS'ing statements like Hemingway. and The Western. is that they cannot be proven through reasoned discourse. Moreover, to even try and do so would require voluminous amounts of 3rd grade problems discourse for something that is not even your thesis: what you actually ARE setting out to prove. As a result, the genre of the compare Academic Essay has evolved into the above norm. It still meets an introduction's purpose of orienting the reader, it just does so in a very specific manner. Having accomplished that, the expectation for an essay is that you will introduce a thesis statement that is directly related to 3rd grade math, that theoretical framework (or its application). Strengths Weaknesses? As a result, a major convention of the academic essay is that: The introduction ends with the thesis statement. Having stated a thesis, you are expected to then go and prove it through the body of the essay.

That said, it is important to 3rd grade math problems, discuss what's at stake in making a thesis statement. Consulting Letter? There are four basic logical forms for a thesis statement: #149; A banal thesis statement. #149; A simple thesis statement. #149; A complex thesis statement. #149; An impossible thesis statement. Let's discuss each of these quickly before moving on. A banal thesis statement is a statement that does not really say anything#150;it is in fact meaningless because it is either so overly general or so evident as to not be of significance. Here's an example from literature. A frequent argument students will make is 3rd grade math This author used symbolism to make his point. The statement, however, is meaningless precisely because it is not of compare contrast significance: every author writing literature uses symbolism of math problems one kind or another, either using language metaphorically or metonymically. Thus, to attempt to single out or make a distinction of a piece for better scholarship, using symbolism is to not say anything that even needs proving to begin with.

A simple thesis statement is not quite what it may sound like. A simple thesis statement means that only one main point or argument is going to be proved. The term simple argument can thus be misleading because the math argument itself can and frequently is very theoretically sophisticated. What makes them simple is that in terms of their logical structure, they only problem for free, take on one line of proof, and hence, their organization of proof will be simple. One has to be careful, however, because sometimes one main argument may require SEVERAL supporting arguments.

The example here would be the 3rd grade problems argument that Star Wars belongs within the Western Genre. Here the pwc strategy writer has only one thing to prove, but in order to 3rd grade problems, do so will have to pwc strategy cover, establish the elements that comprise the Western Genre and 3rd grade problems, demonstrate how the film embodies them--not a small task. Simple thesis statements are eminently preferable in terms of writing an elements contrast essay, essay for a course. It allows you to focus on your points and your proofs rather than getting lost in the organization of your arguments. A complex thesis statement means that the thesis has more than one point to prove. In this respect, the essay will have to organize more than one line of reasoning in so far that more than one thing has to be proven. Problems? Complex theses are not necessarily more theoretically sophisticated than simple thesis statements, they are only more difficult to organize clearly. Better Business? In this respect, they are not worth what they entail and should be avoided.

An example of a complex thesis statement would be something like: Faulkner's novels critique the ideologies of patriarchy and racism. This would be an appropriate analysis for the work of Faulkner, but I'm not sure it would be worth it. To begin with, it is not clear what the writer has to problems, gain in terms of proving BOTH of these aspects of the work rather than just the one. Instead, with this complex thesis, there are going to be long sections of the essay where half of what needs to be proved will be left suspended while the other half gets discussed. In addition, the thesis picks the work of Faulkner which necessitates discussing every book, rather than just one. Thus it is that an important convention of the academic essay is that: A complex thesis statement can usually be restructured into a more theoretically sophisticated (if not interesting) simple thesis statement. Making an Argument. As stated earlier, the academic essay is an exercise in reasoned persuasion.

In this respect, the cover thesis statement is an important organizational structure insofar as it establishes how the rest of the essay will be organized. Math Problems? Classical logic maintains that there are 3 basic kinds of persuasive statements: statements of elements of a contrast fact, statements of value (or evaluation), and statements of policy (or action, which argue what we should do). Unless otherwise specified, the first of these, the statement of fact, is the 3rd grade math form that the thesis statement for an academic essay should take#150;the obvious exception being when you write evaluative criticism (which you will NEVER do in strengths weaknesses, my course). Statements of fact can themselves be grouped into two basic forms: arguments of math problems classification, and arguments of operation or function. It is business possible to make other distinctions, like for example, arguments of relationship (how to things relate to each other) but these distinctions can be readily subsumed into these two basic groups. Arguments of classification are when you establish some sort of criteria, and then argue that something meets or fails to meet that criteria. The earlier example that Star Wars belongs within the Western Genre is an example of an argument of classification. Having established what comprises the Western Genre, the writer will then go on to prove how Star Wars embodies, contains, or possesses those elements. The writer will, in other words, prove that Star Wars meets that criteria. Arguments of operation or function argues in terms of what something does, or how it functions. The earlier argument that Faulkner's work critiques the ideology of patriarchy is an example of function.

This statement argues that Faulkner's work DOES something: it criticizes the ideology of patriarchy. Note that unlike the argument of classification, the problems writer of help this essay SEEMS to have to do more to prove their thesis. They will not only have to define what the ideology of patriarchy is#150;and thus establish criteria#150;they will also have to math, demonstrate that Faulkner's work DOES something with that criteria. The question of HOW leads to a discussion of the body of the essay. The Body of the Essay. From a conceptual standpoint, the function of the body of the essay is to prove the thesis statement laid out in the introduction.

Easy enough. This section discusses how the writer accomplishes that proof. In the discussion of types of argument, I made the point that the writer will have to establish criteria that can be used to prove their argument. The body of the essay is the location where the writer accomplishes that. An introduction is precisely that: It INTRODUCES the theoretical framework and the thesis statement.

It does not DESCRIBE or DISCUSS these two things. This is a fairly common mistake that beginning essay writers make. They fear that they have not said enough in the intro and as a result, go on to discuss aspects of their theory or elaborate on a thesis. The problem with doing so is that it screws up your organization. What comes next is no longer clear to of a, the reader. If you keep it clear to yourself that the purpose of the introduction to your essay is to only INTRODUCE your theoretical framework, and your thesis statement, then the 3rd grade math function of the body of your essay will also become evident to pen vs essay, the reader. They will expect you to establish criteria so that you can prove your thesis. 3rd Grade Problems? As a result, another important norm of the academic essay is: A primary function of the body of the pencil essay is to establish the criteria by which the 3rd grade math problems thesis statement will be proven. Thus it is that having argued that Star Wars is a Western, the body of the paper is going to have to first establish the elements that comprise the Western#150;it will have to establish the criteria by which the thesis can be proven. To argue that Faulkner's work criticizes thee ideology of patriarchy is going to require that the writer establish what the ideology of patriarchy is. Establishing the criteria by which the thesis statement will be proven leads to the next logical step: demonstrating how the object under investigation meets those criteria.

Clearly it is not enough for the Faulkner essayist to just define what the ideology of patriarchy is. Their thesis is that Faulkner's work criticizes that ideology. As a result, they will have to point to specific things within the text and argue that they relate to those criteria IN A SPECIFIC WAY#150;in this case through a process of criticism. This process of relating the essay object of investigation back to the established criteria is another fundamental component of the body of the essay. Without it, the proof is not complete. As silly as that sounds, I kid you not that the most frequent mistake of beginning essay writers is a failure to relate their analysis back to the criteria they have established. Thus it is that another important norm for the academic essay is: Relate the analysis back to the terms and concepts of the established criteria. The Star Wars example brings up another fundamental logical task to this process. From the beginning you have probably thought the Star Wars thesis to not be very feasible. The film is not set in the West, and it occurs in the future. The question becomes, however, whether these are ESSENTIAL criteria to the Western, and problems, if not, what is?

In terms of proving that thesis statement, the me solve a math problem writer is going to have to clearly establish what the elements of the Western Genre are, and then relate aspects of the film back to ALL of those criteria. Herein lies the 3rd grade math essential importance of completeness to that process. Essay Of Personal Strengths? If the Star Wars writer establishes the criteria but can only point to the gun-fighting that occurs in the film, then their essay will fail to 3rd grade math problems, persuade. Their essay will fail to persuade precisely because it inadequately addresses the scope of the criteria. Elements Of A Compare Contrast? Thus it is that another important norm for this process is: Fully address the math established criteria. It is very important to strengths, note that fully addressing the scope of the criteria does NOT mean that the object under discussion has to fully meet ALL the criteria. To stick with the Star Wars example, the 3rd grade math problems writer can not IGNORE the issue of setting and even remotely hope to persuade the audience. In some way, the consulting writer is going to have to address the fact that both time and 3rd grade math, place are out autobiography of a newspaper, of the 3rd grade bounds of the Western. This is the point precisely. The author will have to ADDRESS that point#150;those criteria#150;not necessarily MEET those criteria.

In this respect, the of personal strengths weaknesses writer is going to have make a supporting argument about how these criteria relate to each other in terms of comprising the genre (or in math, a logical sense the whole). The important point is of a newspaper that all criteria are addressed adequately. Failure to address any of the established criteria creates a gap in logic. Subsequently, the reasoning process (and its ability to persuade) fails. Fully relating the object of the thesis to the established criteria fulfills the logical requirements necessary to persuade reasonably and allows the 3rd grade math problems writer to draw conclusions. Before that process is discussed, however, it is necessary to examine an important component of this relating back process. The Role of elements contrast essay Description. Relating the object of investigation or the object of the thesis back to the established criteria is necessarily going to involve description.

Description is frequently an problems, unclear and business, thorny issue for writers of the 3rd grade math problems academic essay#150;especially in terms of scope (how much is enough?). The purpose of description, however, clarifies the issue of scope. The purpose of description to is to make clear, or establish WHAT in the object of investigation (the film, the scene, the shot) relates to the criteria being used. It therefore becomes important for the writer to pwc strategy consulting cover, use description in such a manner as to establish the basis of the relationship between the object and the criteria. Furthermore, the writer should LIMIT description to accomplishing only this task. Added description is not only superfluous, but distracts from trying to 3rd grade, prove your argument.

As a result, another important norm for the body of the academic essay is: Subordinate description to the purpose of pwc strategy consulting cover letter analysis. As stated above the process of math fully relating the object of the of a thesis to the established criteria has the effect of fulfilling the logical requirements. It is THAT task which ultimately persuades, not the conclusion itself. It is for math, this reason that, in some respects, the conclusion does not seem to have a FUNDAMENTAL role in elements of a compare contrast, the process of reasoned persuasion. That in itself probably accounts for 3rd grade math, how many dopey tips exist for what to essay, do with a conclusion, like: repeat the thesis statement (like people have forgotten it despite the fact that you've been working to prove it the entire time) or some other such thing.

What to do with a conclusion if the work of proof is already done? The most effective thing to do with a conclusion is to first signal that the work is coming to close, and then close off the discussion itself by stating something definitive about the work. Like the 3rd grade math introduction, then, the conclusion has a dual role: to signal the transition to closure, and to close the discussion with a definitive statement. Consulting? The work of the conclusion should reference the thesis, without necessarily repeating the thesis (or the steps by which it was proven) It should then say something definitive that signals closure by pointing to the implications of math what you've discussed, by amplifying what you've discussed, or by contextualizing what you've discussed. In each case, you are striving to close discussion by being definitive, and you are taking caution not to violate rule #1 of the academic essay: avoid statements that you cannot prove. To stay with the pencil running examples, the conclusion to the Faulkner paper could look something like this: . it therefore serves as an example of how literary texts structure their criticisms of math problems dominant ideologies. (pointing to of personal weaknesses, the implications of proving your argument). Thus, far from being a portrait of its time Faulkner's work demonstrates that literary works actively engage ideologies. 3rd Grade? (amplifying your argument) Rather than a story centered exclusively on war, Hemingway's novel instead participates in the reinforcement of dominant ideologies with American culture. (Contextualizing the argument) Note that the similarity here is how definitive these statements are. They draw upon the work that has been done, but say something different and final that is logically based upon what has been discussed.

There are, of course, variations on the genre of the strengths academic essay--some rather large difference exist, for example, between the social sciences and the humanites. This discussion is 3rd grade math problems based on pwc strategy consulting cover letter, the humanties approach. Other variations can result from the idiosyncracies of 3rd grade math specific instructors. Essay? To the degree that what is written here sounds heavy handed and inflexible, I caution instead that such tone is trying to reflect the manner in which your own analysis and writing will need to sound precise and rigorous#150;the standards by 3rd grade which the academic essay is evaluated. The precision and pencil essay, rigor with which these norms and conventions are applied should function only to demand that your own analysis and reason engender these standards. They are thus meant to elevate your thinking, not control it.

The principles by 3rd grade problems which the academic essay structures itself is designed to be a discipline that frees your thinking, not subjugate it. Within its conventions is unlimited creative potential whose only demand, ultimately, is that you say something meaningful that others can be persuaded of via your logic. What I have attempted to do here is make the norms and conventions of the genre explicit so that you can refine your skills working within it. Mastering this genre has the elements benefit of developing your skill to analyze situations using explicit criteria, and math problems, be able to make decisions based on that analysis. More than a few people have found that possession of such a skill is essay of personal strengths invaluable in life and professional endeavors.

Next, we give a comprehensive look at the three primary areas that comprise a standard resume (both reverse chronological and combination styles) and which deserve the most attention when writing your resume. The shape of a resume refers to the impact its overall look has on the reader without taking into math, account the autobiography of a meaning or significance of the text printed on said page. The shape of the resume is the very first thing to make an impact upon problems the reader , as it is the first thing the brain processes before having the time to read the text or recognize the pwc strategy cover name or appreciate the paper. Being the first thing the reader subconsciously processes the shape of a resume is quite important. The first aspect to consider when analyzing shape is the proportion of the page margins. Having standardized margins guarantees a resume that won’t stand out and is the safest choice for 3rd grade math, 95% of resume writers. 1 inch resume margins are pretty standard, and especially useful for pen vs pencil, job applicants without much experience.

Margins can vary by tenths of a point and still be acceptable, however it may be difficult for the amateur resume writer to really understand what is “acceptable” in the industry, and thus sticking to a standardized margin is recommended. 1 inch resume margins are pretty standard, and especially useful for job applicants without much experience as 1” margins are the math largest allowed on of a essay, resumes and 3rd grade problems, will help make the typed text seem lengthier than it is. Resume Genius’ resume maker actually utilizes precise .63” margins, as Resume Genius experts feel that .63” strikes the better essay perfect harmonious balance between making the math text appear broader, and “fuller” than larger margins of elements compare essay, 1” which create slightly too much white space. It should be noted that the proportion of “white space” is 3rd grade math, a constant measurement of a resumes shape, as too much white space (blank space) on pwc strategy cover, the page makes a resume seem lacking and appear barren, while too little white space makes a resume feel cramped and too busy. Going any lower than .5” margins on problems, your resume is strengths weaknesses, not advisable because it often leaves the hiring manager feeling claustrophobic. As with margins, the length of a resume is a critical formatting factor that has a large impact in the overall aesthetic of the document and thus is consequential enough to give considerable consideration. Also like margins, the perfect resume length is a hotly contested subject within the 3rd grade resume writing community. Compare Contrast Essay! There are few general rules of 3rd grade math, thumb however to help you determine what length is most appropriate for you. Alignment of elements of a compare contrast, resumes is a pretty straightforward process as they are almost always left alighted , as this is how most in the western world read text.

Headings, experience bullet points, educational information and additional skills will all be left aligned. Contact details and 3rd grade math, applicant names will be center aligned 90% of the time , however some special styles will left alight the pwc strategy consulting cover letter contact information. There are special areas of the resume however that can be center aligned under the right circumstances outside of contact information. The resume’s introduction is also sometimes centered. Choosing to do so is a matter of personal taste and math, both perfectly acceptable. 2. Aesthetics: Fonts Font Size, Lines, Symbols, and Colors. Determining the most appropriate font style for a resume can be a difficult task for the applicant with an essay strengths weaknesses untrained eye. There are thousands of different styles of fonts, but only a few that are appropriate for professional documents such as cover letters, resumes and thank you letters. 3rd Grade! Before choosing a particular style applicants must first choose between two worlds, that of serif and sans serif fonts. Serif fonts have small lines attached to the ends of the letters. This is most commonly used in word processing or other non-traditional forms of pwc strategy consulting letter, typesetting.

Sans Serif, “Sans” being French for “without” is lettering that does not include small lines or hooks at the end of each letter. Choosing between one or another is a matter of personal preference and no one font can be said to be definitely better than another. Like colors, personal preference plays a large role, and since guessing a HR’s personal preference is 3rd grade problems, impossible choosing a personal favorite is perfectly acceptable. For a crisper font at smaller sizes it is advisable to browse less stylized Sans Serif fonts. Times Roman fonts have been used the most, however the smaller the font size the harder these become to read because of their artistic Serif nature. Bookman Old Style Georgia Times Roman Times New Roman. Arial Avenir Calibri Helvetica Veranda.

Styles vary so much that one may look horrible at pen vs, 10.5 while another font looks best at 10.5 and too bloated at 11.5. Many applicants may be surprised to math, learn that there is no one single correct resume font size. There are “safe bets” like 11pt font that should look aesthetically pleasing in many different styles, however this is a very one-size-fits all approach to what is a very delicate process. Resume writing is not an approximate art but instead a precise operation, and the more attention given to better business bureau scholarship, precision the better the final product. Your resume font size should actually be linked directly to font style. Styles vary so much that one style may look horrible and nearly unreadable at 10.5 while another font looks best at 10.5 and too bloated at 11.5.

To achieve a perfect balance first select a desired font style, then adjust it’s size accordingly, using one –tenth of a decimal place to fine tune the problems final size. See how the essay style makes the 3rd grade math problems type look much different even though they are the same size? Do not make the mistake of letting page length dictate font size. If an applicant’s resume is just exceeding one page by a few words or a sentence try fitting to one page by first choosing synonyms or rewriting sentences to make them shorter and more succinct. Only after an applicant has exhausted their ability to shorten their resume with language should they turn to minor margin and font size and style adjustments. Just remember, don’t sacrifice overall aesthetic quality with the single-minded goal of fitting to one page.

A resume is valued for the sum of all parts, not just its length . Beyond just margins and font selection the essay newspaper overall shape of a resume can also be greatly influenced by the subtle and 3rd grade problems, strategic use of lines and bullet points. Pwc Strategy Cover Letter! These are the math problems only two non-alphanumerical symbols allowed on a professional resume, as elements such as clipart; word art, smiley faces or even diamonds are simply not acceptable. Lines break up a page and stop the business bureau essay eye from reading further momentarily , allowing the brain to 3rd grade math, process the just read information for a fraction of a second longer should there have never existed a break line in the first place. Such break lines can be inserted into elements essay, a resume after a career objective or summary of 3rd grade math, qualifications for bureau essay scholarship, example to emphasize the statement above. Break lines can also be used to math, separate special titles or unique sections like key skills if writing a functional or combination style resume.

Only use lines sparingly, as too many will break up the page into too many pieces and obstruct the readers eye from moving fluidly from section to section, ultimately frustrating the reader. Symbols may only be used in the form of help me solve a math problem for free, bullet points or spacers. The most common symbol used is the traditional bullet point, which consists of a small black dot. This is the preferred form of using bullet points, and is the 3rd grade math safest choice. Those applicants who are a little more unconventional in their style could perhaps consider an alternative bullet shape such as a small black square, but this is about as big of weaknesses, a deviation as is acceptable.

Essentially, applicants are to problems, choose between a bowtie or a tie , both communicating a similar message. 5 Ways to Deal with Word Repetition. Word repetition can really weigh down your writing and 3rd grade problems, slow down readers. Try out these five simple ways to me solve problem tackle word repetition and improve your writing skills. I believe “word rep.” is the comment I write most frequently on student papers. That’s because word repetition is 3rd grade math, a telltale—maybe the telltale—sign of me solve a math problem awkward, non-mindful writing, whether by students or anyone else.

The writer has presumably gotten the pertinent information onto the screen, but has not taken the time to read the sentence to herself, silently or out loud. If she did, that word rep. would sound like fingernails on the blackboard. Consequently, “listening” to 3rd grade problems your sentences with the sensitivity to pick up word repetition is a strong first step to grappling with the problem. (There are a lot of other benefits to reading your stuff out pwc strategy consulting loud—in fact, it’s my number-one writing tip.) Today#8217;s post is by Ben Yagoda , author of How to Not Write Bad: The Most Common Writing Problems and the Best Ways to Avoid Them. He is a journalism professor in problems, the English Department at the University of Delaware. Business Essay Scholarship? He is the author of Memoir: A History; Will Rogers: A Biography; When You Catch an Adjective, Kill It; The Sound on the Page; The Art of Fact; and About Town: The New Yorker and the World It Made ; and problems, co-author of All in essay of personal strengths, a Lifetime: An Autobiography about Dr. Math Problems? Ruth Westheimer. He has written for help me solve a math, Slate, The Chronicle of 3rd grade problems Higher Education, The New York Times Book Review, Stop Smiling, and other publications. He lives in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, with his wife and two daughters. There are some nuances to my unified theory of word repetition, which boil down to: the more common the consulting cover word, the more leeway you have in repeating it, and vice versa. In the previous sentence, I repeated “to,” “word,” “more,” and “the” (twice, for a total of three times).

That is not ideal, but it’s okay; readers are not likely to notice. On the other hand, I know I would have to wait at least a few more pages (if this were a multi-page article) before reusing the expressions “vice versa” and “boils down to.” Words like “repetition” and “common” would be somewhere in problems, between. No matter how long the article is, I would not be able to use the notion of “unified theory” again. I once had a student submit something very close to help a math the following in an assignment: “Johnson is the 3rd grade youngest representative in the legislature. Pwc Strategy Consulting Cover? When he was twenty-three, Johnson defeated the Republican incumbent.” For some reason, a lot of people tend to 3rd grade math problems needlessly repeat proper names, forgetting that they have at their disposal the very useful pronouns “he” and “she.” They have the added value of being in the category of common words, mentioned above, that can be repeated with near impunity. So the business bureau passage above could become: “Johnson is the youngest representative in 3rd grade math, the legislature. At the age of twenty-three, he defeated the Republican incumbent.” 4. Letter? Just Say No to math problems Elegant Variation. H.W. Fowler, author of the great early twentieth-century book Modern English Usage , coined the term “elegant variation” (which I’ll call EV) to refer a synonym, near synonym, or invented synonym used for the express purpose of avoiding word repetition. In Fowler’s view, and better business bureau essay, mine, elegant variation is 3rd grade math problems, not a good thing.

Your efforts to avoid repetition are too clumsy and obvious. Take a look at business essay two examples (EV in parenthesis): “Hartnell read the newspaper. When he was finished with (the periodical), he got up and 3rd grade math problems, went outside.” “Spence hit a home run in the second inning, his fifth (circuit clout) of the campaign.” In both cases, as is essay of a newspaper, often true, the simplest solution is just to take out the EV (along with the word “with” in the first example). 3rd Grade Math? Incidentally, perceptive readers may have noticed that the second passage contains another EV: “the campaign.” Mediocre sportswriters are elegant variers to the bone, and pencil essay, they will reflexively seek to avid a common word, even if they haven’t used it yet! However, “season” is better than “campaign.” Let’s go back to problems something I wrote earlier: “The more common the help me solve a math problem word, the more leeway you have in repeating it.” The repetition of “more” is okay and maybe even good—not only 3rd grade math, because it’s a common word, but because the bureau scholarship repetition is deliberate, and helps create a strong rhythm. (The same is true of 3rd grade problems “because” and “repetition” in the sentence I just wrote.) The key is strengths weaknesses, using repetition deliberately, consciously, and strategically. If you don’t think it can be effective, imagine if Shakespeare had had Macbeth say: “Tomorrow, and the next day, and the one after that, creeps in this petty pace from one twenty-four-hour period to another.” 15 thoughts on “ 5 Ways to Deal with Word Repetition ” This article concerns repetive style; however, its writer exhibited flawed prose in 3rd grade, the opening paragraph. #8220;Word repetition can really weigh down your writing and slow down readers. Try out these five simple ways to tackle word repetition and improve your writing skills.#8221; By assessing this paragraph we see that #8220;really#8221; isn#8217;t needed to modify weigh down. Further, the descriptor #8220;down#8221; is redundant and poorly selected.

The opening article would read better as follows: #8220;Word repetition can impair your writing and me solve for free, frustrate readers. 3rd Grade Problems? However, utilizing these five methods will solve this issue.#8221; A more simple edit to pwc strategy consulting letter the published author#8217;s errant opening sentences would be: #8220;Word repetition can hamper your writing and slow readers. Try these five simple methods to 3rd grade avoid word repetition. (The writer will imprive his craft by decreasing repetitive verbiage. Therefore, #8220;improve your writing skills#8221; can be omitted. Just my take on this piece. Thank you so much for the points about EV and deliberate repetition. I go a bit crazy with my editor who is an absolute fanatic about never, never repeating a word twice, even if it#8217;s the central point of the article and detracts from the meaning if you use the wrong word, just for essay, the sake of not repeating the first occurence. I am always searching online for articles that can help me.

There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also. 3rd Grade? Keep working, great job! I would love to stop by. But, I think it might have to wait until this summer. I did not know that Serlkay had ever expanded its size. I must say that a succesful family owned business in this day and pwc strategy consulting letter, age is a very refreshing sight! As well as this is a very refreshing site!

How can sports writers avid word repetition? They may be able to math avoid it with some diligence but I doubt they can ever avid it. The elegant variation point is a real eye opener. I think I fall into that trap a lot. Thanks for pointing that out. Since #8220;Write#8221; in the title of your book is a verb, shouldn#8217;t it read #8220;How Not to Write Badly,#8221; using the essay autobiography newspaper adverb? Or am I missing the joke? I guess I missed the joke, too. I cringed when I read #8220;How Not to Write Bad.#8221; Otherwise, it was a good article. Thanks for the practical ideas on repetition. EV is evila prose-killer, fo sho. #128521; Whenever I see Brian#8217;s face in my inbox, I know I am getting a good blog.

And a good blog it was. Not repeating or re-using the same words over and over again and again is a pretty good and decent way, method, and formula to keep your writing from 3rd grade problems, being redundant, superfluous, extraneous, or full of unnecessary repetitions or unneeded terms, words, or phrases that you#8217;ve already used. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow#8230; And all our yesterdays#8230;. Now that#8217;s deliberate! Great example. Out, out, brief candle. Better Business Bureau Essay? Great article!

Word repetition is one of the most prevalant issues I find while beta reading. Prevalant? I cannot find that in 3rd grade math, my Webster#8217;s or OED!

Practice Makes Progress? Homework Assignments and Outcome in Treatment of Cocaine Dependence. The relationship between treatment outcome and the extent to which participants completed homework assignments was evaluated among 60 cocaine-dependent individuals assigned to cognitive#x02013;behavioral therapy (CBT). Homework was assigned in 72% of all sessions and initiated by participants in 48% of the sessions in which it was assigned. Completion of homework was unrelated to participants' baseline characteristics and several indicators of treatment compliance. Participants who completed more homework assignments demonstrated significantly greater increases in the quantity and quality of their coping skills and used significantly less cocaine during treatment and through a 1-year follow-up. These data suggest that the extent to which participants are willing to complete extrasession assignments may be an important mediator of response to CBT. Cognitive#x02013;behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches have comparatively high levels of 3rd grade math problems empirical support across a wide range of mental disorders, and accumulating evidence points to the durability of CBT's effects after treatment ends as a particularly salient feature of pencil CBT (Hollon, 2003). Distinctive features that may contribute to CBT's durability include its emphasis on skills training and strategies for math problems, modifying behaviors or cognitions that may play a role in perpetuating problems. In turn, effective acquisition, mastery, and generalization of new behaviors may require that they be practiced outside of treatment.

Hence, CBT manuals routinely emphasize extrasession practice, through homework assignments, to encourage implementation and elements of a compare contrast essay rehearsal of skills outside of sessions. Homework assignments have been seen as a critical, but understudied, component of CBT for a variety of math disorders for pen vs pencil essay, which it has been shown to be effective. Early studies that evaluated the role of homework assignments in 3rd grade math, improving treatment outcome had a number of methodological limitations and elements of a compare essay often produced inconsistent results. These included failures to evaluate (a) the degree to 3rd grade math problems, which therapists assigned homework adequately and essay strengths weaknesses consistently; (b) prospectively, the degree to which participants completed assignments (i.e., rather than relying on 3rd grade therapists' retrospective recall); (c) the quality of completion of homework assignments; and (d) the better bureau scholarship role of math problems possible confounding variables (e.g., symptom severity, motivation) in homework compliance (Primakoff, Epstein, #x00026; Covi, 1986). Recent studies have significantly addressed these limitations and have generally found positive relationships between homework completion and outcome in CBT (Bryant, Simons, #x00026; Thase, 1999; Burns #x00026; Spangler, 2000). Although accumulating empirical evidence supports the efficacy and durability of CBT for substance use disorders, and homework assignments are a recommended component of virtually all CBT manuals for substance use disorders, the relationship of homework to outcome has received very little evaluation in the substance abuse literature. Help Me Solve. Using data from a randomized clinical trial evaluating CBT, interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), and math problems disulfiram for cocaine dependence (Carroll et al., 2004), we evaluated the relationships among participants' completion of homework, skills acquisition, and treatment outcome in pen vs essay, CBT. We first conducted exploratory analyses to evaluate (a) the type of participants who were more likely to do homework assignments, (b) therapist variables associated with homework completion, and (c) the relationship between compliance with homework and other process variables. Next, two primary hypotheses were evaluated: First, we hypothesized that better compliance with homework would be related to math problems, higher levels of bureau essay scholarship participants' acquisition of coping skills. Second, we expected improved cocaine outcomes, both during treatment and through a 1-year follow-up period, for 3rd grade math problems, participants who completed more homework assignments compared with those who did not do homework.

Data for help me solve, this report come from a 2 #x000d7; 2 factorial randomized clinical trial in math problems, which 121 cocaine-dependent individuals were assigned to elements contrast essay, either CBT or IPT and to either disulfiram or placebo (Carroll et al., 2004) delivered over 12 weeks. 3rd Grade Math. Participants were recruited from treatment-seeking individuals who met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of newspaper Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition ( DSM-IV ; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) criteria for current cocaine dependence and who provided written informed consent. Homework assignments were not a component of IPT, and problems thus the elements contrast essay remainder of this article focuses only on the 60 individuals randomized to manual-guided CBT (Carroll, 1998), which was delivered by nine doctoral-level therapists. 3rd Grade Math Problems. Material discussed during sessions was supplemented with extrasession homework tasks that were intended to foster practice of newspaper coping skills. Preprinted homework assignment sheets were provided in the manual for each session topic and 3rd grade problems included reminders and review of key points for pwc strategy consulting, each topic. Participants completed an assessment battery before treatment, weekly during treatment, at the 12-week treatment endpoint, and at math problems, 3-month intervals through 1 year by independent clinical evaluators who were unaware of the participants' treatment condition. The primary outcome measures were frequency of cocaine use and results of urine toxicology screens. The Substance Abuse Calendar, which is similar to the Timeline Follow Back method, was administered weekly during treatment to pen vs essay, collect detailed day-by-day self-reports of substance use through the 3rd grade math 84-day treatment period.

Medication compliance was monitored through a riboflavin marker procedure. The Cocaine Risk Response Test (CRRT; Carroll, Nich, Frankforter, #x00026; Bisighini, 1999) was used to assess changes in coping skills. This test involves audiotaping participants' responses to 10 situations that are commonly associated with relapse to of a contrast, cocaine use; responses are scored as to their quality and 3rd grade math problems the specific type of response articulated, and the CRRT has been shown to have very good reliability and elements of a compare essay predictive validity (Carroll et al., 1999). The Cocaine Use Inventory (CUI), an adaptation of the 3rd grade Situational Confidence Questionnaire (Breslin, Sobell, Sobell, #x00026; Agrawal, 2000), was used to assess participants' self-rated confidence in for free, a variety of high-risk situations for cocaine use. The working alliance was assessed after the second session using the client and therapist versions of the Working Alliance Inventory (Horvath #x00026; Greenberg, 1986). All therapy sessions were videotaped for ongoing supervision as well as for independent evaluation of therapist fidelity to 3rd grade math, manual guidelines and therapist skill. Five hundred eight videotapes were rated by evaluators who were masked to the participants' treatment condition, using the Yale Adherence and Competence Scale (YACS; Carroll et al., 2000), which indicated that the study treatments were highly discriminable. The CBT Scale of the YACS, which encompasses six items (e.g., providing training in elements contrast essay, specific skills, conducting functional analyses), includes two items pertaining specifically to homework: One item assesses the 3rd grade therapist's interventions relating to assigning homework for the next session (e.g., selecting and compare agreeing on an assignment, discussing the rationale for homework) and the other evaluates the therapist's focus on the participant's experience with the previous week's homework (e.g., exploring reactions, discussing barriers to completing the assignment). Homework completion was assessed by a weekly clinician session report form, in 3rd grade math, which clinicians reported whether they had reviewed the participants' homework from the previous session. Business Bureau Essay. If homework had been reviewed, the therapist recorded whether, in math problems, their judgment, the participant had (a) made no attempt to do the assignment, (b) made some attempt but did not fully complete the assignment, or (c) completed the pwc strategy consulting letter assignment successfully.

Compliance with homework assignments was treated both as a continuous variable (percentage of homework assignments attempted or completed) and as a categorical variable with three levels (#x0201c;noncompleters,#x0201d; participants who never did homework; #x0201c;attempters,#x0201d; those who only attempted but did not complete any homework assignments; and #x0201c;completers,#x0201d; those who completed homework at math, least once) to facilitate analysis of cover letter variance (ANOVA) and chi-square comparisons of math baseline variables and treatment process by participants' levels of homework completion. Me Solve. Because the math problems results of the analyses that treated homework completion as a continuous variable were highly consistent with those that treated it as categorical variable, only the analyses treating homework completion as a categorical presentation are presented below. Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to autobiography, evaluate the relationship among homework completion, skills acquisition, confidence, and within-treatment, cocaine-use outcomes. Random effect regression models were used to problems, evaluate frequency of cocaine use over time during follow-up. Of 60 individuals randomized to scholarship, CBT, 57 initiated treatment, 54 completed more than one treatment session and 50 had homework assigned. 3rd Grade. Twenty-seven of the 50 participants randomized to CBT who were assigned homework completed treatment; of the 23 participants who did not begin or who dropped out of pen vs treatment, 19 were successfully tracked and 3rd grade math interviewed for the posttreatment assessment.

Thus, full timeline follow-back data for the 12-week treatment period were available on 92% of the individuals who were assigned homework in CBT, and 1-year follow-up data were available on 100% of those assigned homework. Of the 50 participants who were assigned homework, 43 attempted or completed homework and 26 of those completed homework once or more during treatment, on the basis of the therapists' weekly session reports. Homework was assigned by therapists in elements of a compare essay, 72% of math problems all sessions, was attempted or completed by participants in 48% of sessions where it was assigned, and was fully completed in 24% of the sessions in autobiography, which it had been assigned. Tables 1 and #x200B; and2 2 present participant demographic and baseline characteristics by homework completion, treated as a categorical variable. None of these variables were significantly related to homework completion at the .05 level. There were no significant differences across therapists in the mean number of sessions in which homework was assigned by the therapists, F (4, 38) = 0.73, p = .58; the math problems percentage of their participants who completed homework, F (4, 38) = 2.10, p = .72; or in their overall percentage of pen vs pencil essay sessions in which homework was attempted or completed, F (4, 38) = 0.65, p = .63. The therapists' reports of whether they had assigned homework for the next session closely matched the independent raters' ratings regarding whether homework had been assigned in that session, F (1, 271) = 43.20, p #x0003c; .001.

Similarly, for 3rd grade, sessions where the therapists indicated they had discussed the participants' completion of a previous homework assignment, the raters indicated significantly higher ratings on the YACS item that assessed review of essay strengths a previous assignment ( M s = 2.6 vs. Math. 1.5, respectively), F (1, 271) = 52.20, p #x0003c; .001. There were also strong associations between participants' compliance with homework assignments and ratings of the therapists' overall CBT adherence and skill. That is, compared with session in which homework was not done, there were significantly higher ratings mean ratings of CBT adherence (2.7 vs. Autobiography Of A. 2.2), F (1, 270) = 20.10, p #x0003c; .001, and skill (4.5 vs. 4.2), F (1, 264) = 8.50, p #x0003c; .001, for 3rd grade, those sessions in which homework had been completed or attempted, as measured by contrast the six-item CBT Scale of the math YACS. Better Business. As shown in 3rd grade, Table 3 , homework completion was significantly related to retention, as measured by the number of essay of a newspaper treatment sessions completed. However, the extent to which participants completed assignments was not strongly associated with other markers of compliance such as total number of 3rd grade math weeks in treatment or medication compliance.

Level of homework completion was not significantly related to the working alliance from the participants' perspective but was associated with the alliance from the therapists' perspective. Acquisition of coping skills was assessed before and after treatment by independent ratings of quality and elements of a compare type of coping responses on the CRRT role-playing task. As shown in Table 4 , there were significant Group X Time interactions for a number of CRRT dimensions. Math Problems. These interactions suggest that there were greater increases across time in the quality of participants' coping responses and greater reductions in the number of me solve a math problem for free situations in 3rd grade problems, which the participants indicated they were likely to pwc strategy letter, use cocaine, with post hoc Tukey's tests indicating that those completing homework had significantly better responses than those who did not do homework or those who only attempted homework. Similarly, self-reported confidence in a range of high-risk situations, as measured by the CUI, suggested that participants who completed homework reported significantly greater increases in confidence than those who did not do or only attempted homework. There were also significant relationships between homework completion and cocaine use outcomes.

As shown in Table 5 , participants who completed homework had a significantly higher percentage of 3rd grade math days abstinent from cocaine during treatment and tended to have a higher percentage of essay autobiography of a newspaper cocaine-free urine specimens ( p = .09) than those who did not do or who only 3rd grade math attempted homework. Similarly, the participants' longest period of consecutive abstinence during the 12-week treatment period was strongly associated with their level of better essay scholarship homework completion. Homework completion was strongly related to outcome during the one-year follow-up. As shown in Figure 1 , which provides estimates from random regression analyses evaluating frequency of cocaine use across the 1-year follow-up by 3rd grade math problems level of homework completion, participants who completed or attempted homework during treatment used cocaine significantly less frequently during follow-up than those who did not do homework (Homework X Time z = 2.04, p = .04). Moreover, the help me solve a math problem relationship between doing any homework and long-term outcome remained significant even after including number of sessions completed in the model as a covariate (Homework X Time z = 2.1, p = .04; covariate z = 2.6, p = .01).

This evaluation of the role of homework in CBT for cocaine dependence suggests that completion of homework was associated with greater increases in math, the quantity and help me solve a math for free quality of coping skills as well as significantly less cocaine use during treatment and through a 1-year follow-up, with best outcomes seen among those who completed homework with some consistency. These results thus provide support of homework as a possible mechanism of action (i.e., a mediator#x02013;process associated with therapeutic change) of CBT in this sample, in 3rd grade, that several of the requirements for inferring this relationship (Barron #x00026; Kenny, 1986; Kraemer, Wilson, Fairburn, #x00026; Agras, 2002) were met: First, data were drawn from a randomized, controlled trial of CBT in which there was a significant main effect of treatment (Carroll et al., 2004), as participants assigned to CBT had significantly greater reductions in the frequency of cocaine use compared with IPT. Second, higher levels of homework completion were associated with significantly greater improvement in coping skills and participants' reported confidence in for free, dealing with high-risk situations, which are consistent with the theoretical underpinnings of CBT for 3rd grade math, substance use. Finally, completion of contrast homework assignments was strongly associated with immediate posttreatment and 1-year cocaine outcomes, even after controlling for retention. This inference is also supported by math problems the relative lack of evidence that homework involvement was strongly associated with other variables that might account for the relationship between homework completion and treatment outcome. Pwc Strategy Consulting. Completion of 3rd grade math problems homework was not significantly associated with any particular participant characteristic or feature typically associated with differential treatment outcomes, or with participant characteristics that might be expected to pwc strategy cover letter, be associated with willingness or ability to engage in homework, including educational level, baseline level of coping skills, self-efficacy, source of referral, or level of motivation. Although completion of homework was significantly associated with the number of sessions completed, it was not strongly associated with other indicators of compliance. Fifth, homework completion was not strongly associated with the working alliance when rated from the participants' perspective. That is, participants appeared willing to do homework regardless of the degree to which they reported liking their therapist or indicating the relationship was helpful to them.

Completion of homework assignments was, however, significantly related to the working alliance from the perspective of the therapists. 3rd Grade Math Problems. Although this might suggest that the therapists were more likely to encourage homework completion in the context of what they perceived as more positive working relationships, it is autobiography of a also possible that the therapists may have perceived participants' willingness to do homework as an indicator that treatment was going well. Furthermore, homework completion did not appear to be strongly related to math problems, therapist characteristics or therapist effects. The degree to which participants completed homework was, however, significantly associated with the degree to which therapists emphasized the importance of bureau essay homework and spent time reviewing homework assignments, as confirmed by ratings of math session tapes by the independent evaluators. Moreover, completion of homework was strongly associated with therapists' overall levels of CBT adherence and competence, suggesting important relationships between general levels of fidelity and skill in implementing CBT and homework completion. This study addressed several methodological issues noted in better business, previous research, in that homework completion was assessed prospectively and at 3rd grade, multiple time points, therapists' self-reports of the degree to which they assigned homework were consistent with ratings from independent evaluators, process variables that might covary with homework completion were assessed, and acquisition of coping skills was measured through independent ratings of skill on a role-play task, not solely through participants' self-reports, which might have been subject to demand characteristics or covaried with participants' perceptions of their own symptomatic improvement. However, it should be noted that important limitations preclude strong inferences of a causal relationship between homework completion and consulting cocaine use outcomes in this trial. First, homework completion was not manipulated in this study.

Inferring a causal relationship would require a design where some participants were assigned homework and math others not (Kazdin #x00026; Nock, 2003). Essay Of Personal Strengths. Second, it should also be noted that sample sizes, especially for the group who did no homework, were limited. Although this was addressed to some extent by the strategy of treating homework compliance as both a categorical and 3rd grade continuous variable, the findings require replication with a larger sample. Third, it is not possible to bureau essay, determine from this study whether homework completion was a specific or nonspecific effect (Primakoff et al., 1986). That is, it cannot be concluded whether the math apparent therapeutic benefit of doing homework was associated with participants' practice of specific CBT skills outside of me solve for free sessions or related to a more general willingness to math problems, carry aspects of the autobiography therapy into their lives outside the sessions.

Nevertheless, these data are significant in that they represent the first evaluation of the importance of homework assignments in math problems, CBT for better essay scholarship, substance dependence and suggest that completing homework may have a strong association with better immediate and long-term outcomes. Can sociologists study society in the same way that scientists study the natural world? Sociologists study society as a 'social science' however the status of sociology as a science is 3rd grade math problems easily questionable when compared to help a math for free how acknowledged scientists study the natural world. Math. In order to determine whether or not sociology can be accepted as a true science it is useful to make comparisons between the studies performed by both sociologists and natural scientists on their subjects of society and the natural world respectively. At its most fundamental level, the philosophy behind knowledge, reality and elements contrast being must also be scrutinized as the knowledge which is so eagerly pursued by scientists is math only relevant under certain philosophical conditions. The natural world can be accepted as what can be sensed and has matter. Scientists study the essay of personal strengths weaknesses, natural world using an empirical, experimental and factual approach. They investigate and analyse the workings of nature before testing each conclusion.

A biologist can study the nucleus of a cell because it can be seen with a microscope and experiments show it to exist. A chemist can study hydrogen because it can be sensed through it's reactions with other chemicals. Math Problems. A physicist can study electricity because it can be seen to exist by lighting a bulb. They study these things in better bureau the pursuit of knowledge. Society is different from the natural world in that it is not a 'thing' with physical existence that can be investigated with our senses. Society consists of groupings of humans, and its study looks at math, the way these groupings behave. When a sociologist studies society they look at behaviour and the mind. Behaviour and the mind do not take physical form like an atom does, and so it can be argued that they do not exist, and so cannot be studied scientifically.

Or perhaps they do exist as chemicals inside the autobiography of a, physical entity that is the brain, and so can be studied scientifically like any other matter. With science, one of the main aims in seeking the 'facts' is keeping a high level of objectivity so that those facts which are sought are the same for all scientists, independent of their subjective inclinations. Problems. This objectivity would seem fairly simply, say, with study of inanimate objects. However, sociologists study people and people don't necessarily behave like inanimate objects - they may, for example, react differently to varying interviewing styles used in help social research. Given a questionnaire, an interviewer may put particular emphasis on a certain answer in 3rd grade math that questionnaire to encourage the respondent to give that answer. A level of bias is hence created, whilst such bias is perhaps far more difficult to help me solve leverage in problems the study of the natural world. If an expert natural scientists proclaims that the mass of the substance x is 5g it may be taken as a scientific objective fact. Any number of me solve a math problem, scientists could conduct a similar study and would return the same empirical result, giving additional experimental proof and backing to the first scientists study. A sociologist has a far greater struggle in their line of study, as the majority of result they may conclude will be difficult to prove and replicate in further studies.

But whatever results are collected by both the sociologist and the natural scientists, any objectivity found is 3rd grade math problems still subject to our philosophical understanding of reality, conditioned by help a math problem for free, the society and time in which we have come to live. An understanding of what reality actually is is crucial. Philosophically there are two main camps on epistemology - there are the idealists, and there are the materialists. Idealists (such as Plato and Hegel of the past) see every material thing having been created by a powerful God or spirit, and ideas govern the material world. Conversely, materialists see matter as primary, and ideas and the mind are a product of the matter in 3rd grade math problems the brain. Most people believe that they have have 'free-will' - they can think for themselves, as an individual, independent of help a math problem, anything else of matter. However, this belief requires idealism in one's philosophy, yet modern science relies on a purely materialistic philosophy. Materialists would argue that any level of perceived free-will is not free-will and ideas are nothing else than the 3rd grade, material world reflected in the human mind, and translated into forms and thoughts (Marx). The mode of thought which dominates the modern capitalist philosophy and science is called the metaphysics.

The 'facts' are sought after, things are dealt with separately and statically, rather than in connection and in their movement. To some, however, this is essay strengths sheer reductionism, and results in many contradictions which are ignored. Everything is 3rd grade math reduced to just characteristics and strengths functions. Marx and Engels found metaphysics as too limited in its scope to explain the laws governing human society and thought. They worked together to develop the method of dialectic materialism so that it could be used scientifically in relation to society. Using dialectics, society is understood not as superficial changes and existing in the now, but in 3rd grade its historical development and consulting letter as an entity existing throughout human history which is undergoing organic developmental change. Under a dialectic philosophy, today's societies are seen as the result of a process of math problems, historical development. Elements Compare Contrast Essay. Dialectical thinking stands in the same relationship to 3rd grade math problems metaphysics as a motion picture to a still photograph. Essay Scholarship. The one does not contradict the other, but compliments it.

However, the problems, truer, more complete approximation of reality is contained in the movie (Sewell Woods, 1983). Using the positivist approach adopted by Marx and Engels enables the establishment of business bureau, laws of human behaviour in the same way natural scientists have established laws of the natural world. Their approach to dialectics was a development of the philosophical theory of 3rd grade problems, Hegel, although they were the first to develop this theory in scientific terms, as was documented in Engels' Anti-Duhring (1877). Positivists view ideas, thought and mind as scientists see atoms, and should be in the same state of mind as the physicist, chemist or physiologist when he probes into a still unexplored region of the scientific domain (Durkheim 1964: xiv). Me Solve A Math For Free. Positivism shares many similarities to the empirical research methods employed by scientists, most notably in its objective attention to detail in the collection of data. In keeping objectivity, positivists can only study that which can be seen, measured and observed with the math problems, purpose of discovering what causes things to happen.

Interpretivism (and behaviourism) opposes positivism, focusing on action theory. Human behaviour is business essay taken to be meaningful and worthy of study beyond empiricism as it is far more than that. Interpretivists see ideas, thought and mind as mere social and mental constructs, so we cannot fully understand the world because we take our own individual view points to what is math problems happening. Durkheim was a positivist - he thought it both possible and desirable for sociologists to pwc strategy cover be able to establish laws of human behaviour. Math. In his study of suicide, Durkheim found it to be the product of social forces external to the individual. Consulting Cover Letter. People's behaviour is seen to be governed by external stimuli, and their ideas and 3rd grade math feelings are irrelevant. As a result, the behaviour can be objectively rather than subjectively observed and measured, similar to how a scientist observes and measures the natural world. Interpretivists or anti-positivists suggest people people apply meaning to the world, and so sociology should not even try to be scientific.

Human behaviour is taken to be meaningful and so cannot be understood in the same way as natural phenomena can be. In metaphysics, a tree is a tree, there is not meaning for it being a tree, it just is. Human thoughts and ideas aren't just thoughts and of a newspaper ideas, they have meaning. If someone is to commit suicide then there is a meaning for them to do that. Whilst the actions of 11th September 2001 are seen by most as an act of terrorism, to those committing the acts they most likely had an entirely different meaning.

Likewise, the war on terrorism can be given contradicting meanings by different individuals and societies. To an interpretivist, reality is math too complicated for numbers and elements compare contrast quantitative analysis to problems be made. Qualitative methods are essential for a full understanding of social reality. Scientific objectivity cannot be upheld using these qualitative methods which require a level of subjective thought. Underlying everything is essay a problem of math problems, ontology. What makes something real? What makes an apple any more real than slavery? And what exactly is an apple - where does it begin, where does it end, where does it exist? Metaphysically the apple is that 'thing' that can be touched and sensed.

Dialectically it isn't that easy - it's always changing, always flowing, can never be defined. Help Problem. Idealistically the apple is what one believes to be an problems apple, and essay strengths weaknesses that may only be a figment of one's imagination. The apple may just be a chemical reaction experienced in sensing it. By thinking dialectically slavery exists in the same way that an apple does, and can be explained equally scientifically, but using different scientific methods to those currently employed. In metaphysics everything must be objectively quantified to be scientific, but it may not always be possible - may never be possible. Valid knowledge is subjective. A basic mathematical equality is that '1 + 1 = 2', and that the result can not possibly be anything other than 2. However here it can simply and swiftly be disproved - take two drinks, add them both together and you have one drink - '1 + 1 = 1'. 3rd Grade Problems. Similar reasoning can be taken further to show that the sum is never equal to pencil essay two as to do so would involve making subjective definitions.

So what is a 'fact' and a 'truth' that science is so intent on discovering, when one of the most basic mathematical principles on which science is based can be so easily disproved? Scientific method can be subjective and ambiguous, as Michael D. Sofka (1997) writes: Reference is often made to 'The Scientific Method' as though it were one, well established, universal problem solving tool. The truth is, we do not have a good description of what scientists actually do, and we are not even close to universally prescriptions for what they should be doing. As a result, scientific method is merely an unscientific combination of common sense guesses and rules of thumb, and math problems where one rule of pwc strategy, thumb is contrary to another, the scientist subjectively chooses which one to follow. At the most simple level, the natural world is studied in order to math unstrained the natural world, and society is studied in order to understand society. Differences begin to arise in the use of this knowledge. Knowledge of the natural world has many and pwc strategy consulting cover letter varied uses: medicinal healing; computational devices; weapons of math problems, mass destruction.

The list is essay of personal weaknesses endless and always growing as new discoveries are made. A problem arises in assessing the uses of problems, a knowledge of society in that it doesn't manifest itself in physical form. With knowledge of society one can't make a toaster, for example. Nor can one make a society. The use is that enables people to understand why people do things, what makes them behave in certain ways. Proving whether this knowledge is true is elements of a essay difficult to demonstrate. With natural science, a toaster can be built, and if it works, then the science behind the toaster is believed to be objective and true.

Because sociologists cannot manifest any physical entity with their knowledge, the truth of their knowledge can surely be nothing but subjective. Before any research method can be carried out there must be some theory, and in examining the math problems, objectivity of help, this in relation to social theory May notes that It is commonly thought that if values enter the research process, this renders its findings void (1997: 40). However in opposition to 3rd grade this he demonstrates that these values enable critical evaluation of how knowledge is produced and how it may be biased towards those who are able to perpetuate their beliefs within society. May argues that although social theory can be used to interpret empirical data, it also enables a more general orientation in better bureau essay relation to political, historical, economic and social issues, as well as providing a basis for critical reflection on 3rd grade problems the process of bureau essay scholarship, research itself and math social systems in general (1997: 27). Pwc Strategy Consulting Cover. This view suggests that whilst parts of sociology may be studiable similar to the natural sciences, it can also be studied in ways that the natural sciences are not. Sociology students are required to write essays and attend lectures on theory, and problems this is a prominent way in which sociology is taught. Emphasis is not necessarily on research and the results of this research, but on ways of of personal strengths weaknesses, thinking. Science, however, is 3rd grade math taught with the essay weaknesses, emphasis on problems research and autobiography newspaper experimentation. Sociology provokes thought and qualitative analysis of math, ideas and better business bureau opinions.

Science involves learning formulas, structures and math laws. Whilst sociology too can teach these things, it does so only as a small part of the whole. But sociology exists as a discipline which is not so restricted as the sciences. It can be both objective and pen vs essay subjective, as can the very nature of the 'thing' called society that it studies. To study it as a science is to take away half of its essence, as to is to study it as everything but a science.

Perhaps the question should be not 'can' sociologists study society in the same way that scientists study the natural world, but 'do all'. Marx and Durkheim, two of three founding fathers of sociology, studied the discipline as a science, as have many others. Hence sociologists can (evidence here is in that they have) studied society like scientists study the natural world. By that line of thinking, it is irrelevant that many have also studied it as something other than a science. But if all sociologists study society as a science, then which academic body will have their thoughts provoked by and be able to qualitatively analyse society?

Equally, if it is math so important to consulting cover make sociology a recognised science, then it must be split in two. That sociology which can be scientifically tested, and that which cannot be. Objective sociology based on facts, laws and common scientific principles; and math subjective sociology which cannot study anything objectively because that's no longer in its field, and contrast so anything subjective can no longer be researched in objective ways. Ridiculous of course, because this is twisting the question's intended interpretation. It's clear what it means to all that read it: Look at natural science and how scientists study it, and 3rd grade math do the better business bureau, same for sociologists and society.

Look at math problems, the ways in autobiography which they study it, the methods they use, the theory the 3rd grade, use. Then, using the research of consulting cover letter, sociologists to backup evidence and points, find out what similarities and differences there are. Ensure a rigid structure is 3rd grade math problems kept throughout, with logical progression leading to a well thought out conclusion. But, as with sociology, science and life, it's a subjective interpretation because we are only human. Humans are inherently subjective. Through exploring the study of society and the natural world a number of contradictions, difficulties and problems have arisen. There is the problem of ontology, of the very essence of essay autobiography newspaper, being, and how a philosophical theory is required to make interpretations.

Objectivity is just the problems, accumulation of many peoples' subjectivities, and so it's superiority over subjectivity in scientific methodologies is questionable. Society can only help me solve a math for free be fully studied as scientists study the natural world if one adopts a full philosophy of dialectic materialism. With any other current philosophy, there are unacceptable scientific contradictions which cannot be resolved and 3rd grade problems so negate the autobiography of a newspaper, scientific integrity of any findings.
