myspace essay Citation: boyd, danah. 2006. Friendster lost steam. Is MySpace just a fad? Apophenia Blog. March 21. http://www.danah.org/papers/FriendsterMySpaceEssay.html. [Note: this is an essay that would've been a blog post but it got too long.] A lot of folks have asked me What went wrong with Friendster?

Why is MySpace any different? I guess i never directly answered that question, even though i've addressed the teaching causes in other talks. Still, i guess it would be helpful to piece some of it together and directly attend to this question. There is no single answer, but there are a lot of factors that must be considered. To an outsider, Friendster and MySpace seem identical. But they are far from that. They are rooted in different cultural practices and values. People use them differently and they relate to them differently. If you want to understand the thesis differences, you need to fellowship, understand the history, the essay words decisions that were made, and how these decisions affected practice. Let me address some of the most critical components. Social technologies succeed when they fit into the social lives and practices of teaching fellowship essays, those who engage with the in an essay technology.

When Friendster launched, it was quickly inhabited by populations who had good reasons to essays, connect with each other. By and large, the early adopters were living in a region different from their hometown (or living in their hometown post-college and cranky about it). Finding lost friends was a fun game - people wanted to khanal, connect. Of course, connecting is not enough and fellowship essays, it was bound not to last, but it was fun. Connecting is also the initial activity of essay words, newcomers on MySpace, but they move beyond that quickly. Of course, it never completely goes away, especially since MySpace acknowledges that not all friends are friends and no one bats an eye if someone collects hundreds of people. It's more like a process of namaste - i acknowledge your soul and you acknowledge mine.

MySpace did not try to force people's connecting practices into pre-existing ideas of teaching fellowship, what should be. They let the uses of mobile phones essay practice evolve as users saw fit, without criticism, without restriction. As it evolved, people did new things with it. They used it to flirt, to advertise bands and activities, to offer cultural kudos. Friendster's early adopters were 20-somethings. While many did not come to Friendster to teaching essays, get laid (just as they say they don't go to bars to get laid), places where large numbers of hott singles hang out of mobile phones, are bound to attract other singles, regardless of whether or not they want to admit that they're looking for sex. Essays. Friendster was a free site where people could meet other interesting people; at the same time, rejection was OK because no one was actually _looking_ to meet someone.

Sex is dead man walking essay, still the teaching fellowship essays reason why people use the site, particularly gay men. This was a big gain for Friendster and, also a gain for MySpace. Given its singular focus, Friendster was much more successful at supporting this than MySpace, making certain that search worked and was meaningful and that relationships meant something . Of course, that also curtailed its growth tremendously. Friendster launched at a time when the economy was slow and many web-minded 20-somethings were slacking at menial jobs that they didn't care about (particularly in the SF region where people were only thesis, coming out of post-bust depression); many web-minded folks were happy to spend hours futzing online. Economic factors have changed and many web-minded have found interesting jobs. This is only a small cause of Friendster's loss of this group, but one that should be acknowledged. Friendster was a new thing, full of interesting content that motivated people to surf and surf and teaching, surf. Surfing motivated people to post more interesting things. Games emerged. A Poem. Games were squashed by fellowship essays, the company. Surfing got super duper slow.

Friendster became less novel and more restrictive and, thus, more lame. MySpace launched at a time when some of the game-minded were still enthusiastic and the enthusiastic surfers wanted to find more kitsch crap. They jumped on MySpace, created all sorts of culture and man walking of the essay, profiles complete with massive amounts of teaching fellowship essays, media, and name in an, helped figure out how to hack the teaching essays system to a and m application, make the profiles more expressive. Teaching. MySpace didn't stop them. As a result, the cultural enthusiasm was nurtured and it grew and grew and and misuses essay, grew. MySpace realized that people were promoting events on teaching fellowship essays Friendster. They contacted promoters and got them to engage with the cool people on the site by citing name in an essay, promoting LA-based events. From this, there was the emergence of band profiles, giving musicians an opportunity to create identity and have a place to point fans to. Music is cultural currency. Teaching Essays. 20-somethings want to know how to get on the list.

Young people follow music and celebrities. Other young people follow the young people that follow music. Music played a critical role in increasing its popularity, simply by giving it cultural currency amongst celebrities and by marking MySpace as cool. (Even teens who don't care about music recognize that music differentiates people and is part of the cool narrative.) Both Friendster and a and essay, MySpace saw a drop in ages. Friendster squelched this fast because they saw themselves as a dating site.

MySpace supported it with different features and a drop in age limit as they realized there was more to sites like this than dating. Youth and alienated populations are inclined to spend more time going through identity development processes because they are trying to figure out who they are. Blogs and profiles are particularly supportive of this. Of course, blogs require having something to essays, say while profiles let you write yourself into being via collage. People do grow out of ongoing identity production, but not for quite some time. (Hell, i still haven't.) Friendster tried to stop this, wanting people to strong essay, be serious and fit into pre-defined checkboxes - to know who they are. MySpace let these groups run wild and these are the two populations who dominate MySpace - youth (14-24) and 20/30-somethings who participate actively in cultural development (from performance artists to clubgoers to sex divas to wannabee celebrities).

These sites are ideal for these populations, even if they make no sense to parents and professionals. For many teens, MySpace is the first asynchronous messaging system that they use regularly. Sure, they have emails but those are to communicate with parents/teachers/companies, not with friends. People check in teaching fellowship essays, daily to see what messages they get. This was starting to happen on Friendster, but server slowness killed this practice. This will make it quite tricky for dead man walking analysis movie essay, teens to fellowship, fully leave MySpace while their friends are still using it.

Identity development requires taking ownership of your presentation of dead man walking analysis, self and really being able to personalize it, morph it to be you (even if you is copied from a site that tells you how to be you). Templates are not personalization. MySpace allowed users to teaching, really make the site their own, asking one favor: don't overwrite the advertising. In An Essay. Out of respect, most users complied. Think about that: Out. Of. Respect.

Basically, MySpace evolved with its users, building a trusting relationship, figuring out how to meet their needs and cultural desires, providing them with features and really trying to give them what they were looking for. Friendster did not - it fought its users hand and essays, foot, telling them how to behave. People use the social technologies that all of their friends are using. Freaks, geeks and queers all invaded Friendster in the early days and they made certain that all of their friends were there. They did so organically in clusters. This was very successful, until they felt alienated from the site. There is a tipping point to get on strong essay and a tipping point to get off. Once mass departure began with a few pissed-off folks, it spiraled quickly. While the early adopters left storm-like, canceling their accounts, most users simply stopped logging in fellowship, frequently because it was no longer the place where their friends were. Friendster was beginning to graduate school essays speech, get mainstream American 20/30-somethings when it got bogged down by dreadfully slow servers.

Mainstreams would (and did) irritate the early adopters, but not enough to make them leave. Yet, both mainstream-ification and slowness played a role in the departure of early adopters. Teaching Fellowship Essays. Mainstream-ification played a greater factor in early adopters' lack of interest in returning once the site was fixed. The slow servers made it very difficult (if not impossible) for mainstream users to engage. Frustrated, many lost interest before they really engaged. It should be noted that slow connections are more common in foreign countries and so this did not serve as the same kind of barrier elsewhere - growth continued during the slow period in bishnu, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.

Because of this (and a few other factors), Friendster survived the server disaster in these regions and continued to grow into teaching fellowship, the mainstream there. Khanal. And into the youth. Mainstream American users came on because of mass media, not because of teaching fellowship, organic cluster effects. When they joined, they couldn't see anything or anyone. It was also not where all of their friends were and often they got bored before their friends arrived; there was never enough of a tipping point for many mainstream clusters.

MySpace stayed out of the media for the first two years. Their growth was completely organic, allowing for significant cluster effects. Additionally, those who heard about it but didn't have many friends there could join and still participate, still see what people were doing. They got a friend - Tom - and could wander around looking at all of the profiles. Dead Man Walking Analysis Of The Essay. For cluster influencers, this was critical, and looking around would often motivate them to drag in their friends. When clusters of friends are all on teaching fellowship essays a social site, watercooler effects emerge. The limited amount of things people could share made this difficult on essay Friendster; people mostly shared profiles as cultural currency and testimonials did allow for some marking of teaching fellowship essays, turf and social hierarchy. Yet, on MySpace, there are a bazillion things to find deep in the nooks, allowing lots and lots to school essays, be shared. Allowing media in comments and the ability to teaching fellowship essays, share video/pictures via profiles enhanced this.

Testimonials on uses and misuses of mobile phones essay Friendster took the form of fellowship, singular acknowledgments of others' existence. Essay Words. Fakesters started turning it into a communication space, but that practice died with the fellowship essays Fakesters; very few users took that on. The comments section on graduate essays MySpace took the form of a performative guestbook. Teaching Essays. Whenever someone thinks of someone else, whenever they stop by, they leave a comment. They let both the owner and the owners' visitors take note of their presence. They're writing presence into being in addition to writing themselves into citing name essay, being. This is a very important turn and it really solidifies people's engagement in the site. Social technologies need benevolent dictators who love their constituents. Online communities are more like nation-states than technological tools. There is a master behind the architecture, a master who controls the walls of the essays system and can wage war on her/his people at any point. People know this.

They have to trust that the creators have their best intentions in essay words, mind. Fellowship. They invest a lot of time and citing essay, energy into creating an identity in the system - they want to believe that it is worth it. Killing off profiles destroys the trust that users have in the leader. Doing so will alienate users and their friends. Teaching Fellowship. There are good reasons to alienate some groups - spammers, malicious users, etc. But if you start off treating all of texas a and essay, your users as potential criminals, you will not build a healthy environment. Kinda like in real life. Friendster killed off anyone who didn't conform to their standards, most notably Fakesters and those with more creative non-photorealistic profiles. When MySpace users didn't conform, they were supported and recognized for their contributions to evolving the system. (Exceptions made for fellowship essays, pornography, spammers, people using hate speech.) When Friendster was faltering because it was uncool, Friendster users did not stick up for the site. When MySpace began to falter over the predator crisis, many users got outraged at those attacking the system. They wrote supportive notes to Tom, made YouTube videos, wrote messages on their MySpaces.

They didn't want outsiders telling them they couldn't have their space. People need a figurehead to both love and hate. No figurehead can expect that the users will love her/him all of the texas essay time. But lashing out at users makes things much much worse. Figure heads need to operate as rockstars - making public appearances, putting on a good show, keep a happy face even when pissed off. Jonathan Abrams made it clear that he thought very little of his users.

Tom Anderson comes across as loving his users, listening to fellowship essays, them, being present with them. Abrams wrote nasty-grams and the language he used when writing to everyone was either obnoxious or so corporate-y formulaic that users could not relate to him. Tom apologizes candidly, writes funny messages to users, welcomes comments on his page, responds to graduate school essays speech, users. Fellowship. Users either love Tom or they think he's lame. But very few actually hate him. Friendster users loathed Abrams. It should be noted that one of the reasons that Friendster continued to grow abroad is that Abrams did not seem like as big of citing in an, a dick there. He was much more savvy in addressing the press (or they were nicer to him).

He killed off fewer profiles and let it grow amongst youth (probably due to being overwhelmed rather than insight). Teaching Essays. He had a more hands-off approach. He's less hated there and thus, by default, more trusted. People often say that social networking sites will succeed when people have something to do . They point to sites like LinkedIn where business people can social network and a poem name, actually get value out essays, of the site. There is no doubt that LinkedIn is essay words, great for brownnosers, but there are a lot of folks out there who don't care about getting ahead by hegemonic standards. Suggesting that formalized action and tangible benefits are the only path to success is essays, hogwash. Strong Essay Words. These are simply ideals that contemporary America holds onto in a capitalist society where people are only teaching, valued based on their productivity. It is reproduced by technologists who are living in citing a poem name, a society full of venture capitalists and stockbrokers and teaching, other people who live by the do or die mentality. A Poem Name. But the reality is that most people's social lives are not so formal, not so action-oriented. Or, at least not in the sense that technologists speak of. Even when there's no prescribed activity, people are doing things on these sites.

They're hanging out. They're dancing in front of teaching fellowship, digital mirrors. They're patting their friends on their digital backs. They're increasing the strength of their relationships through sharing. They're consuming and producing cultural artifacts that position them within society. They're laughing, exploring and being entertained.

People were hanging out on bishnu khanal Friendster before they hung out on MySpace. But hanging out on Friendster is fellowship, like hanging out in uses and misuses of mobile essay, a super clean police state where you can't chew gum let alone goof around and you're told exactly how to speak to fellowship essays, others. Hanging out on MySpace is uses and misuses of mobile phones essay, more like hanging out in a graffiti park with fellow goofballs while your favorite band is playing. That said, there are plenty of teaching essays, folks who don't want to be hanging out in a graffiti park and they are not sticking around on MySpace as a result. It is not about school pathology, technological perfection. Portability of identity doesn't matter. Easy-to-use interfaces don't matter.

Visual coherence doesn't matter. Simple navigation doesn't matter. Bugs don't matter. Fancy new technologies don't matter. Simple personalization doesn't matter. Before you scream but it does to me! let me acknowledge that you're right. It does matter to you . The question is whether it matters to teaching, the masses. And it doesn't. Especially for teens. What's at stake here is what is called subcultural capital by academics. It is the kind of capital that anyone can get, if you are cool enough to dead man walking movie essay, know that it exists and cool enough to fellowship, participate.

It is a counterpart to cultural capital which is more like hegemonic capital. That was probably a bit too obscure. Let me give an example. Opera attendance is a form of cultural capital - you are seen as having money and class and strong essay words, even if you think that elongated singing in foreign languages is boring, you attend because that's what cultured people do. You need the teaching essays expensive clothes, the language, the body postures, the social connects and the manners to belong. Limitations are economic and social. Rave attendance is the opposite. Anyone can get in, in theory. There are certainly hodgepodged clothes, street language and dance moves, but most folks can blend in with just a little effort. Bishnu. Yet, the major limitation is knowing that the rave exists.

Being in the know is more powerful than money. Teaching Fellowship Essays. You can't buy your way into knowledge of a rave. Coolness is about structural barriers, about the lack of texas a and, universal accessibility or parsability. Structural hurdles mean people put in more effort to participate. Essays. It's kinda like the adventure of tracking down the right parking lot to citing name essay, get the teaching fellowship bus to go to the rave. The effort matters. Sure, it weeds some people out, but it makes those who participate feel all the more validated. Finding the texas a and m application easter egg, the cool little feature that no one knows about is exciting. Learning all of the nooks and crannies in a complex system is exhilarating. Teaching Essays. Figuring out how to hack things, having the uses and misuses essay inside knowledge is fabu.

Often, people don't need simplicity - they want to feel proud of themselves for figuring something out; they want to feel the joy of teaching essays, exploration. This is the difference between tasks that people are required to uses and misuses of mobile, do and social life. Social life isn't about the easy way to do something - it's about making meaning out of teaching fellowship essays, practice, about finding your own way. Bugs make technologies seem alive, particularly if they're acknowledged and fixed. Analysis Essay. They give texture to the environment and people are impressively patient with it if they feel like the architects are on it. It makes the architects look vulnerable which brings them back down to earth, making them real and fallible, but giving them the teaching essays opportunity to do good. Strong Words. They let the benevolent dictator really serve the people. Friendster focused on simple and narrow, giving users very limited options and cracking down on all hacks. For a long time, they took away features rather than adding them.

They worked to mainstream-ify, to be equally generic to fellowship, all users. Citing Name. MySpace added features all the time, making it a game to see what had changed, to find new ways of navigating the essays site. Hacking the site became a cultural phenomenon with websites being dedicated to hacking techniques (brought to you by fellow cultural participants not O'Reilly). MySpace let users define the culture. MySpace might be a fad, but it will fade for different reasons than Friendster. Friendster has itself to strong essay words, blame - it never loved its users. it never treated them with respect, or learned to understand why they were there. it never give them what they needed to teaching fellowship essays, make themselves at citing in an essay home. Friendster never learned to teaching essays, provide for the diversity of users it had - it wanted them all to be the same. MySpace is in a different position, one far more harrowing. MySpace has grown so large that the needs, values and practices of its users are slamming into each other. It's facing the citing a poem name in an essay archetypical clashing of cultures. Yet, interestingly, most users are not that concerned - they're trying to figure out how to live in this super public.

The challenge is that outsiders are panicking about a culture that they are not a part of. They want to kill the super public rather than support people in learning how to teaching, negotiate it. No one knows how to live in such a super public, but this structure is going to graduate speech, become increasingly a part of our lives. It is no wonder that youth want to figure it out. Teaching Fellowship Essays. And it is critical that they do, especially since our physical worlds have become more segregated and walled off, partitioned by age, race, class, religion, values, etc.

Yet, it is the older generation that did that segregating and they're not really ready to face collapsed contexts at every turn or to learn how to engage with people who have very different values on a daily basis. Strong Essay Words. Because of their position of power, outsiders are pushing the big red emergency button, screaming danger and creating a complete and utter moral panic. Teaching. Welcome to a generational divide, where adults are unable to see the practices of their children on kids' terms. If MySpace falters in the next 1-2 years, it will be because of this moral panic. Before all of you competitors get motivated to exacerbate the moral panic, think again. If the moral panic succeeds: Youth will lose (even more) freedom of speech.

How far will the graduate school speech curtailment of the First Amendment go? All users will lose the safety and opportunities of pseudonymity, particularly around political speech and teaching fellowship essays, particularly internationally. Internet companies will be required to confirm the real life identity of all users. At their own cost. International growth on social communities will be massively curtailed because it is much harder to confirm non-US populations. Internet companies will lose the protections of strong essay words, common carrier which will have ramifications in all sorts of directions.

Internet companies will see a massive increase in subpoenas and will be forced to turn over data on their users which will in turn destroy the trust relationship between companies and users. There will be a much greater barrier for new communities to form and for startups to build out new social environments. International companies will be far better positioned to create new social technologies because they won't have to teaching fellowship essays, abide by American laws even if American citizens use their technology (assuming the servers are hosted outside of the US). Strong Essay Words. Unless, of course, we decide to block sites on a nation-wide basis. If the teaching moral panic over texas a and m application MySpace succeeds and causes a change in law (which it is looking like it will), everyone invested in fellowship essays, social technologies will lose. In other words, stop celebrating the crisis and get off your asses and engage. This panic is not just a funny side note. It is an citing name in an essay, industry wide problem concerning speech, property and fellowship essays, responsibility.

I find it deeply disturbing that we are suggesting that technology companies should be operating in loco parentis. MySpace is in trouble because of its size and rapid growth. As a result of this, there are so many conflicting practices that people are panicking. Even if your kid has a perfectly PG profile, the idea that s/he can hang with R-rated ones is flipping people out, even when the R-rated ones are perfectly normal in the context in which their created. Collapsed contexts due to a poem in an, size.

All of you who want to grow in size better be paying attention, because there are severe complications when you grow. MySpace is facing them right now. We have faced seen massive communities with collapsed contexts before, but the additional factor of youth has elevated this issue to new levels. And, besides, we've never actually seen such rapid growth in a social technology, nor have we seen such a large coherent social community. Note: Usenet, MOOs and YahooGroups don't count because they were far more segmented structurally, especially pre-search.

When they emerged, a much larger proportion of the online population used them, and these technologies did not threaten cultural norms (mostly because hegemonic society wasn't online and didn't recognize the teaching fellowship essays power of digital interaction). Other social technologies did not attract an and misuses of mobile essay, entire generation while alienating their practices from the previous generation. Finally, while people did expose themselves in other technologies, explicit profile creation of fellowship, this multi-media form takes it all to a new level. Back to citing a poem essay, the fad question. No, it is not just a moral panic that could make MySpace a fad. Fellowship Essays. The primary value right now has to do with identity production and sharing, practices that are more critical to certain populations at certain times in their lives and it is of the movie essay, possible that growing up will be marked by leaving MySpace (both for the teens and the 20-somethings). Fellowship Essays. It is also possible that getting on MySpace will be marked as uncool by the next generation (in the same way that fashion changes across generations). Feeling spammed and man walking of the movie essay, invaded by advertisers (or musicians) who seek friendship might turn off users and an increase in this could cripple usage. It is possible that the site will stop evolving with its users.

It is possible that people will find new, more interesting ways to do identity production and sharing. Essays. It is essay, also possible that the fellowship next blinky shiny object will attract users away in clumps, particularly if they better support users' desires in an innovative way. But none of these are right around the corner. When Friendster users left, they didn't go to the next thing. Yes, many Burners went to bishnu, Tribe.net and teaching, created a really flourishing community there; this community is still alive and doing really well. And some of the gothy humans went to texas a and m application essay, MySpace. Fellowship. But the strong words vast majority of Friendster users simply went back to email and IM, web surfing and the occasional blogging. Essays. Friendster didn't meet their needs and the core practices of identity production and social sharing that MySpace offered were not significant enough for this group.

A huge part of the success of MySpace is an age and culture thing. Bishnu Khanal Thesis. Part of being an American teen is figuring out who you are, how you fit into society and essays, culture, how social relations work, etc. Khanal Thesis. Part of teaching fellowship, this process involves sharing cultural objects, hanging out and trying out different self-performances to find the one that feels right (think Goffman faces). Man Walking Of The Movie. There are plenty of adults who are doing this as well, but it is central to youth culture. Youth will always do this, using whatever medium is available to teaching fellowship essays, them. MySpace is pathology, far more deeply situated in the cultural values and practices of its constituents than Friendster ever was. MySpace teens may jump ship, but they are not going to stop doing identity work, at teaching fellowship essays least not for a few years. I began this as a blog post and citing in an essay, it grew and grew and i want to put it out there even though i know that i'm missing factors. Teaching Fellowship. Still, i think that this should answer many of the questions that people have. MySpace is not the same as Friendster - it will not fade in the same way.

Friendster was a fad; MySpace has become far more than that. If it doesn't evolve, it will fade, but MySpace is far better positioned to evolve than Friendster was. That said, i think we're seeing a huge shift in social life - negotiating super publics. I kinda suspect that MySpace teens are going to lead the way in figuring this out, just as teens in the 60s and 70s paved the way to figuring out school speech, globalized life with TV. I just hope law doesn't try to stop culture.

Warning: if i wake up and teaching fellowship, think of strong essay, more things, i may edit this essay.

Analysis of fellowship essays Michael Pollan’s essay “Why Bother?” Analysis of Michael Pollan’s essay “Why Bother?” Michael Pollan, in dead his essay “Why bother” published last April 20, 2008 in teaching fellowship essays the New York Times , is convincing the uses and misuses, public to teaching fellowship essays, do their own individual share of averting climate change by bothering to name essay, do what they may think as insignificant activities yet nevertheless would help decrease the release of CO 2 into the atmosphere. In his essay he tackles the teaching, dilemma of how difficult that task is considering that the heart of the school speech pathology, problem is a crisis of teaching essays character; a fault on modern man’s ingrained way of thinking and doing things. Pollan asserts in his essay that the difficulty to avert climate change is not because it needed massive human acts and texas essay sacrifices but because it demands a collective insignificant individual change in daily human activities; a change however that is not seen as an teaching essays obvious solution to the problem by most people. Need essay sample on Analysis of Michael Pollan’s essay “Why Bother?” ? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you for only $12.90/page. The above assertion points out three claims made by of mobile phones Pollan in essays the essay. First, the task of contributing individual share to avert climate change is so ordinary, simple and utterly useless that it may be regarded as a bother. Second, man’s countless everyday acts and choices is what had put him into the crisis of climate change and that radically changing his everyday acts and choices may well save the planet. Third, modern man does not realize that a personal change is citing name in an essay demanded of him to solve the problem of climate change. For the first claim, Pollan derive his evidence from quotation, feedbacks from fellowship essays, scientists and reasoning. He quoted former Vice-President AL Gore’s documentary movie, “An Inconvenient Truth”, where in the closing credits it asked the graduate essays pathology, viewers to change their light bulbs (Pollan 1).

Even though the problem of climate change or global warming seems daunting, Al Gore’s documentary proposes that merely changing a light bulb may help solve the problem. What a very simple and ordinary solution to fellowship, a big problem! But, in Pollan’s reasoning, the ordinariness and simplicity itself is actually what had made it more difficult to name in an essay, undertake since the task looks insignificant and useless. Instead of being seen as a solution, it is regarded more as a bother, an unchallenging interruption to everyday ways of living (Pollan 2). Moreover this little seemingly insignificant task looks more insignificant considering the fact that something radically big needs to be done as soon as possible to save the Planet otherwise it will be too late to save it. Teaching Essays. Pollan supported this fear by man walking analysis of the movie essay drawing evidence from scientist projections who declared that the warming and the melting is occurring much faster than the models they had predicted , stating that “climate change is upon us and it has arrived well ahead its schedule” (Pollan 1) . The second claim is supported by citing physical evidence, analysis and reasoning. It is teaching not as though something awfully huge made by citing a poem some particular individuals had caused this crisis but that it had accumulated through the teaching essays, years as each individual collectively encouraged the production of CO 2 through his daily lifestyle. Pollan points out several examples of dead analysis man’s daily ordinary activities such as driving, using light and eating—activities, that upon careful analysis, directly and indirectly causes the increase of CO 2 in the atmosphere (Pollan 1-2). According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development “ the transport accounts for between 55% and fellowship 99% greenhouse gases…two-thirds of it are attributable to the private car in the form of CO2” ( OECD 17). Pollon reasons that as long as man rides a car or patronizes these products he is actually encouraging the increase of CO 2 in the atmosphere. If all of these daily individual activities are summed up together, by mathematical reasoning, the school speech pathology, consequence is magnified.

Pollan supported his third claim based on physical evidence and reasoning. He points out that modern man is used to solve his big problem by teaching fellowship the implementation of legislation or technology, or to look for leaders and experts rather than by actually thinking he needs to change his lifestyle. As evidence, he cites modern man’s reliance and dependence on specialists such as agribusiness for meals, doctors for health, teacher for education, and environmentalist for the care of the environment (Pollan 2). As a generalization from these examples, Pollan concludes how unimaginable then for modern man to and misuses of mobile essay, think that he really has the personal responsibility to teaching essays, prevent climate change by making changes in dead movie the level of his everyday living. Logically, based on the preceding examples, man would naturally think that it is the teaching fellowship, government, scientists or environmentalists that take care of the problem of climate change and not himself. Personally, this is what I had thought before, that the big responsibility does not rest on me but on others who have the analysis essay, “official” responsibility. What is teaching fellowship essays being warranted in Pollan’s assertion is that all of humanity causes the strong essay, problem and should therefore as a whole must work together to solve the teaching fellowship, problem.

Modern man should not expect that only a few people or agencies are needed to prevent climate change. School Essays Speech Pathology. As long as the source of the problem is not removed, the problem will always persist. In this essay, Pollan make use of the three types of appeals (pathos, ethos and logos) to convince his listeners to take his side; to really bother. In using the ethos appeal, he derives credibility to his arguments by quoting or citing statements from reliable sources and individuals who have the authority to speak about the issue such as then Vice President Al Gore’s documentary movie “The Inconvenient Truth” as well as scientists. In the logos appeal, he engages his audience in fellowship essays an intellectual discussion, using a lot of dead of the mathematical or logical reasoning or generalizations to make his point and arrive in conclusions. Fellowship Essays. He also make use of pathos appeal; in one point he stirs up the bishnu, audience to fear when he describes the terrifying threats of the exponential increase of CO 2 concentration in the arctic and then proceed to ask “Have you looked into teaching, the eyes of a climate scientist recently?

They look really scared” (Pollan 1). At the dead man walking analysis, same time he motivated his audience to action by reminding them how beautiful, rewarding and accomplished they would feel if they do bother (like bothering to plant a garden) (Pollan 4). In the essay, “Why Bother” Michael Pollan is trying to make each person see their responsibility in preventing climate change and that what an individual can do may look insignificant but collectively can make a huge difference. He claims that all of humanity causes the problem and therefore must do their share to solve it. In convincing his audience to believe his arguments, Pollan uses evidence to support his claims through quoting reliable sources as well as using physical evidence, and observation. To convince his audience , he use a lot of reasoning based on the evidence as well as using a language that would motivate and stir up his audience to action. OECD. cons essay pro Maybe you're a kid wondering how a move from the United States to a foreign country might change your life. Maybe you're a parent pondering the pros and cons of essays, taking another foreign assignment. Will multiple moves irrepairably damage a youngster's psyche? Here are some of my thoughts, based on my personal experience. When I use the term global nomad(s) I do so loosely to describe my own thoughts as one member of that group. This is not an academic treatise on texas, the subject -- only teaching fellowship essays, a sketch of some elements of the experience I have found particularly noteworthy. Who is a global nomad? A global nomad is an individual who, spending a significant part of their developmental years in another culture, develops some sense of belonging to both the host culture and the home culture, while not having a sense of total ownership in either. Elements from both (or multiple) cultures are blended, resulting in the third culture.

Global nomads don't all have the same experiences in bishnu thesis the same countries. What they have in common is the teaching essays, experience of texas a and m application, moving multiple times to various countries that become part of their cultural identity. They don't necessarily share a similar background, they don't necessarily speak the same languages, they didn't necessarily go to the same international schools. But they share the experience of growing up in culture(s) not their own. I personally prefer the term global nomad coined by Norma McCaig to another frequently used phrase, third culture kid or TCK. Fellowship Essays? Beginning in 1970, at the age of 18 months, I spent sizeable portions of bishnu khanal thesis, my childhood, adolescence and fellowship teen years moving every one, two or three years. I didn't stop to question my nomadic life until I was 26, working in a poem name in an essay Japan for a Japanese company and feeling completely uprooted.

The comments that follow relate mostly to my experiences of essays, being a US passport holder, but a mix of khanal, Japanese and American cultures with a dash of European for teaching essays spice. It took misery to prompt me into wondering what it would be like not to move every couple of years. It seemed to me that for many people, having a stable community and home during childhood was a source of stability and strength. I began questioning how my life would have been different had I not moved so continuously. M Application? I realized that my journey had provided me with many positive tools, and some very difficult experiences. Essays? I needed to sort them out, so I made a list and pondered it.

The following is a result of my thoughts. I like to start with the strong essay words, bright side. After comparing notes with other global nomads and thinking over my life, these are some of the upside elements of living all over the world. Cross Cultural Skills. It took me a long time to articulate and value the fellowship essays, concept of graduate speech, cross cultural skills.

This shouldn't happen anymore . . . Fellowship Essays? parents, teachers and strong essay business communities must become more aware of these skills so they can acknowledge and encourage them in their children, employees and peers. Flexibility, tolerance and strong observation skills are cross cultural skills par excellence. And as the world becomes ever more fast-paced global nomads come already equipped with the necessary skills to essays change adjustment stress into success. Graduate School? As cultures and fellowship communities come increasingly into contact, global nomads know how to respect, observe and learn from cultural differences. Khanal? We don't assume that our way is the best or only teaching essays, way. We are life-long learners, and the world is our classroom.

These are critical skills in a world looking for graduate school economic prosperity and teaching peace, when in the past there has been a tendency to strong words destroy what we don't understand and annihilate those who are different. We can also be wonderful teachers for others who aren't used to dealing with rapid change. Global nomads tend to think quickly on our feet and can take the initiative to fellowship essays troubleshoot -- but we often do so in a context of understanding the uses, currents and observing the situation first. Since being back in the US for several years now, I've noticed that flexibility and tolerance don't always translate as strong points in American life. It seems to me that holding a strong personal viewpoint and demonstrating leadership is highly valued. Teaching? A person's forceful thinking and handling of a situation garners kudos. Observation in particular seems to be underrated.

I know from experience that Americans will often underestimate or ignore someone who is not loud, flashy, and quick. Many cultures point out that we have two eyes, two ears and citing name essay only one mouth. . . for good reason. The Japanese have a saying, Silence is golden. Global nomads try to figure out teaching fellowship essays which way the river is flowing before we jump in. A And M Application Essay? There are many times when I have thought how much Americans have to learn from these perspectives. Another great aspect of being a global nomad is our multi-dimensional world view. Teaching Essays? From a very young age the world as we know it is thesis, not limited to county lines, a section of the mid-West or even a single country.

The rest of the world is fellowship essays, not merely a 20 minute segment on Fifty Minutes, a National Geographic article or an English speaking pen-pal. I have celebrated Oktoberfest on the Rhine with German friends, eating raw pork with onion on a thick slice of rye bread. I have walked around the magnifient ice carvings during the Japanese Sapporo snow festival with friends from Japan, Indonesia and Palestine. Graduate School Essays Pathology? I know as much about British history and geography as I do about the United States, and I remember when commemorative coins were issued in Solihull, England to fellowship essays celebrate the citing a poem name in an, marriage of Diana, Princess of Wales, to the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles. When a global nomad reads the news, they can often picture and feel what's happening thousands of fellowship, miles away. This does not generally apply to kids who grow up in one culture.

My sister Suzanne returned to the United States at the age of analysis movie essay, 14, having lived abroad since she was three years old. It was her most difficult move, and part of teaching fellowship essays, that was because she no longer had a global nomad peer group. She was attending school at an upscale, East Coast boarding school as a day student. The day the Berlin wall fell in school 1990 she ran to the commons room to essays watch the news. She and I had once stood, gazing at the concrete and dead analysis of the barbed wire no-man's land dividing Germany, with a German friend who had family somewhere past the armed guards. Excitedly thinking about how the Froelich family must feel, Suzanne asked her fellow students to essays turn to the news. It was 12 o'clock. Several other young teens deemed a popular soap opera more important. This is an important point, because unlike kids who grow up in one place, a global nomad feels connected to events taking place all over the world. When an earthquake toppled highways in citing Kobe in January of 1995 and killed over 5,000 people, I wept with the rest of Japan. When floods destroy parts of Bangladesh and essays typhoons sweep away hundreds of people in India, I think of my friends, and their families, and I pray for their safety, just as I do for people killed in mudslides in Seattle.

We recognize that people everywhere share the joys and pains of life. We've lived, felt, smelt, heard and witnessed wide swaths of human experience. One of my personal challenges has been to accept people who haven't traveled and aren't interested in traveling as fine people. For a long time I felt that most people from my home culture -- Americans -- were relatively shallow and essay narrow-minded. Fellowship Essays? During conversations with most Americans I found them woefully ignorant of international events, personalities or issues.

In general they seemed uninterested in the world, complacent and arrogant. Feelings like these can really put a damper on friendships -- but more about that in the section on intimacy. Along with a wider world view comes a greater spiritual perspective as well. This is partly the result of global nomad skills with flexibility and tolerance. It is also because we observe that different people's experience has created different truths in their lives -- from how to relate to self and others to how to relate to a and spirituality. When you spend your childhood observing and fellowship experiencing so many wonderful variations on how and bishnu khanal what to eat (most Americans won't touch raw fish and visibly cringe at the idea of raw pork), how to speak and dance and organize in groups -- it's easy for the global nomad to question those who promote a belief that there is only ONE way to nourish a spiritual life. Rather than be threatened by different belief systems, global nomads often relish the beauty in the diversity of religious systems, taking something from everything. And then there is maturity level.

Most global nomads tend to be a couple years ahead of their home country counterparts in terms of maturity. We have wonderful skills for handling formal situations, and when we answer phones we are polite, we remember to take messages and we are often mistaken for teaching our parents. It comes from often being repeatedly tossed into situations where entertaining -- either business or diplomatic -- is name, a regular event. There is also a sense of maturity that springs from success when you make friends, adjust to a new school, and learn your way around public transportation systems. By the time I was a senior at the American School in Japan getting around Shinjuku station was a breeze, a daily 2 and a half hour commute to and from school was nothing, and my day away from home generally stretched from 7 am to 6 pm -- with homework until late at night. I worked harder in essays highschool for longer hours than I did for the first year and a half at Pomona College. In fact, when I arrived at college I had few common interests with my first year classmates, and found myself making more friends among the Juniors and Seniors. On the other hand, there are areas of development where the global nomad may be totally out of phase. Khanal Thesis? My parents actually had to bully me into a driver's education class when I was 17. We were in Maine on homeleave for teaching two months, and I didn't want to words do it. What was the point?

In Tokyo there was a great train and subway system that got me where I wanted to go far faster than any car could have. I had no interest in learning how to drive a car -- I figured when I returned for college that I would rely on the train and bus system wherever I wound up. There were kids in my driver's ed class who were 14 and a half and couldn't wait to be able to fellowship essays drive -- and dead of the essay couldn't believe I had no interest in learning how to drive. Teaching? I still have trouble remembering my social security number, and I only strong essay words, established a credit card history two years ago at the age of teaching fellowship, 27. Being bilingual or multi-lingual is valuable. When you're at texas essay a school where people speak five, six or seven languages it doesn't seem like knowing another language is teaching essays, that big a deal -- but it is. I deliberately put this in the pro category because people (and Americans in particular) can be strange about dead man walking analysis movie language ability. There is a lot of lip service paid to the advantages of knowing another language, but there are still alot of people who think of it as a novel conversation piece and leave it at that.

Beyond working for the UN or doing translation work people rarely see language capability as important, and are quick to stick to their own familiar words. When I lived in essays England, despite being obviously American, my English papers had marks taken off for every u I forgot to add to words like colour and favour. Most Caucasian Americans I know dismiss language ability as unimportant in a world where English is the and misuses of mobile essay, language coin of the realm. Language is a touchy, natinalistic issue (witness the French rejection of English infiltration). I maintain that the Canadians and teaching essays the continental Europeans (many of essay words, whom know at least two or three languages) are on the right track. Languages offer different people a variety of way of essays, expressing themselves creatively. Who wants only one kind of art? Why would we want only m application, one kind of language? So that's a quick summary of some of the teaching essays, pros that come to mind about being a global nomad. Obviously all the above skills vary depending on the person, how many times they moved, and the attitudes of their parents. So what's on uses phones essay, the darker side of the global nomad experience?

I have found that to teaching get to the place of celebrating the pros of a poem, being a global nomad, I had to deal with some painful emotional issues -- and I still do. I suspect that the global nomad who does not at some time recognize and work with the following issues finds sooner or later that their relationships, their work, and their larger world view are in chaos. One of the drawbacks is a sense of rootlessness. Teaching Fellowship Essays? The belief that you belong simultaneously everywhere and khanal thesis nowhere. When I meet people and they ask me casually, So, where are you from? I always determine what level answer I want to share. There's the short story -- Seattle.

There's the fellowship, potential story -- Seattle, but I spent over twelve years of my life living abroad. And finally there's the all out of the movie essay response -- I call Seattle home now, but I lived in Japan for ten years, Germany two years and spent a year and a half in the United Kingdom. I consider myself to be different parts of all these places and teaching essays people. The struggle in answering the question Where are you from? is a common experience, and you don't want to waste time and breath on someone who doesn't really care. To transcend rootlessness is to feel at home wherever you are, regardless of environment. Home is reframed to a poem name in an include the world. For me, this journey started when I made the decision to fellowship start with my self.

I believe that as long as you feel at home in uses and misuses phones your own skin, you'll always find a way to create home around you. Restlessness is essays, a kindred spirit to rootlessness. I once read that 75 percent of global nomads change colleges at least three times. Neither I nor my sister changed colleges once. . . so someone out there is a and essay, doing a lot of moving around! On the teaching essays, other hand, once I graduated from college I moved four times in as many years. My sister Suzanne just graduated from college and has moved three times in nine months. For most global nomads, it's simply a question of dead analysis of the movie, when, not if, they're going to keep on roaming. Yet sooner or later most global nomads face a crisis (or repeated crises) that bring them face to face with the teaching, question of essay, how often and fellowship essays where do they really want to move.

How restless are they? Why do they feel that way? Is it serving them or is it an archaic bit of life left over from their childhood experiences? It took me until my late twenties to acknowledge the deep sense of rootlessness and strong insecurity that my exotic overseas life masked. I'm still in teaching essays the process of trying to figure it all out. Right now what seems to work is living in a place I call home while knowing that I could travel if I wanted to. Pretty soon I will have been in Seattle for three years. . . the longest I've lived anywhere since I was nine. . Of Mobile Phones? . and I'm curious to see how that will feel. Trouble with intimacy. Global nomads know how to be mobile. Traveling for business or fun poses little problem.

But that same footloose attitude doesn't always bode well for relationships. The idea of commitment, daunting enough for most people, can stir tremendous insecurity and fear in for those raised around the world. It's ironic. On one hand global nomads step into situations with other global nomads and rapidly form strong relationships with them -- usually because they are talking about their experiences, their shared culture. But on the other hand global nomads know how to keep emotional distance. Until recently I always kept a margin of emotional detachment in fellowship all my relationships. My emotional antennae, finely tuned for any vibration of the word goodbye, worked overtime. I felt like I had to bishnu khanal be vigilant and prepared at essays any moment to draw into the protective sheath of my goodbye armor. Global nomads say goodbye multitudes of times -- not only to graduate essays speech pathology people, but to schools, to homes, to cultural identities, to aspects of a country they have come to love. Fellowship? Trusting a relationship to stay the course through the joy and the pain of life flies in speech pathology the face of teaching, accumulated global nomad experience.

We all handle the separation from friends and places differently. Some global nomads attempt to maintain friendships long distance. With each move, as the list of correspondants grows and the pain increases, this can be a formidable task. The Internet, with it's gift of e-mail, is a godsend for global nomads. Instead of graduate essays speech pathology, expensive phone calls and/or time-consuming and outdated letter correspondence, you can type off an update and send it to dozens of teaching essays, people all over the world and they'll be reading it sometime within the next 24 hours. Although some global nomads work at relationship despite time and graduate essays speech pathology distance, some do not. Some can end relationships on the turn of a dime. When they learn a friend is leaving in a couple months, they turn and walk away, thinking that if they start letting go now that when the moment of true goodbye arrives it will not sting and ache quite as much.

This is not just some neurotic problem -- it is a response that builds up over several experiences of being told by a parent that We're leaving Singapore for France when the school year ends. Isn't that a surprise? It builds when global nomads discover that friends are leaving a year earlier than expected, and essays will be gone within the month. For a long time my thinking ran something like this: the words, best line of defense against essays pain is a good offense, therefore guard against vulnerability and be prepared to drop a relationship at a moment's notice. Some of my deepest on-going struggles are the ones I have with trusting and creating geniune relationships. Because I am asked again and again to be vulnerable. To reveal my true feelings.

To allow myself to uses of mobile phones care deeply about the presence and love of other human beings. To be willing to share pain and tears and witness them in another without running away. In this journey there is no room for unilateral decision-making, or unilateral leave-taking. This will be part of my life-time work. Loneliness and isolation can become unwelcome bosom buddies as a single move turns into two, into three, into four. It is a lifelong challenge for anyone to handle the balance of past and fellowship present in a way that leads to a fully lived present. Global nomads tend to either be more susceptible to living more in the past (especially if they're unhappy with a new school, location or living circumstance) or denying they ever had a past at thesis all. Opening to past sadness or other people requires a level of vulnerability that can at first feel devastating. It is tempting to insist that I can take care of myself, I don't need anyone else.

Self-reliance and independence are valuable resources, but not at the expense of fellowship essays, pushing away help when you need it. Uses And Misuses Of Mobile Phones? When I was about essays 13 years old I adopted the Simon and Garfunkel I am a rock philosophy of life -- and I spent years feeling isolated and lonely . On top of that, I learned to expect airport delays, long waits for the packers to finish packing or unpacking our home and an even longer time spent finding friends. I filled those hours/days/months with books and thoughts. If I am being aware, I can slip into times when being sociable is too much of a burden. . . it's easier, more pleasant, and more fun to be by speech, myself. When you haven't had a sense of having a large social support group, it can be difficult to develop and maintain a social support group later. Most people take this for granted -- they have friends, family, church folks and a sense of teaching, community to lean on.

They know that they are isolated only if they choose to be. But for those of us who have moved around a lot, stable community is a new concept, and it takes time to really understand or trust it. The rootlessness and struggle with intimacy will create all kinds of learning opportunities in any close relationship a global nomad has. Khanal? Those who have grown up in one place will probably have a tough time understanding their friend or partner's restlessness, the desire to move, the teaching fellowship essays, need for change. A Poem Name In An Essay? And if you're with another global nomad. Fellowship Essays? . . who gets to choose where to live next?! Of course there are those who, having moved all over the world as a child have no intention of moving again, ever! They can become very permanently settled, but this is less common, particularly during the college transition.

Unresolved grief is probably the heaviest burden in khanal thesis the backpack of the global nomad. When you say goodbye as many times as a global nomad does you can start building up some pretty intense grief. I've been told the average number of goodbyes for global nomads is fellowship, eight times by the time they're 18 years old, although for me it was five times. But that's just the times when I was the one leaving, it doesn't include the goodbyes I said to essay words others who were going while I stayed behind. How you handle partings becomes a critical component of the rest of your life. It's taken me years to figure out how to teaching respond when even small goodbyes trigger mudslides of denial and bishnu khanal emotion.

For example, 24 hours before my fiancee leaves for a three day business trip I start withdrawing. A sense of teaching essays, loneliness way out of graduate pathology, proportion with the time he will be gone wells up in me. And as I'm driving away from dropping him at essays the airport, I always cry. Over the last year I've gone from tears streaming down my face to a tear drop or two, and now I don't have a crushing sense that I'll NEVER see him again. Because now I know it's less about him leaving than it is essay, about my emotional goodbye button getting a firm push. The goodbye at the airport scenario takes on fellowship, gothic, mythic overtones for the global nomad.

Grief happens and it can't be reasoned with. Texas Essay? The truth is there's only way out of it -- and that is by essays, going through it. If nobody gives you time to say what you're feeling out loud, to listen to you in your sadness, or to acknowledge that it hurts to be away from graduate speech pathology people and places you love, you tend to stuff it all inside. And when this happens over several moves, you've got some pretty potent grief gnawing at your heart. Everyone experiences grief -- it's not that global nomads have a corner on the grief market. Teaching? But we experience loss on essay, a more regular and intense basis, and fellowship often with a greater sense of being alone than those who experience loss while living continuously in their home town. Parents and educators need to realize that it is phones, critical for the global nomad (and themselves) to have time to grieve. Parents need to witness to fellowship that grief. School Essays Speech Pathology? Without guilt, without defensiveness -- but to really hear the sadness.

Otherwise, that grief and loneliness will help create relationship chaos for that global nomad throughout his or her life. Technology -- and teaching fellowship essays a culture that values stoicism -- doesn't allow much time for texas a and m application dealing for grief anymore. Planes take off from the US and land half a world away in a matter of 13 hours. Fellowship Essays? Air journies don't lend themselves to grieving. You're dehydrated (no way to cry), cramped (no room to draw a breath) and in a public area (the person next door is not going to be thrilled about witnessing your emotional squall). Words? There used to be time to process grief associated with travel. My ancestors who left Scandinavia in 1891 and 1902 took steamship rides that lasted five or six weeks -- they had ample time to teaching essays process their leave-taking. There is another closely related con here too, which is unresolved anger. Bishnu Khanal? I'm not going to write about it yet though, because I haven't figured this one out. I can say that it's there, but I can't offer any perspective or suggestions for how to recognize or cope with it yet. . . Essays? but give me time. What I realized writing this is a and essay, that every pro carries seeds of cons and teaching fellowship essays every con carries seeds of citing a poem name in an, pros.

Because global nomads have ached at the loss of fellowship essays, locations and essay friends we love, we tend to be highly compassionate and empathic folks. Teaching? We understand isolation, we understand discomfort around being new, we understand the feeling of not belonging. It is a rare global nomad who will not reach out to the person who is new, or try to citing a poem in an comfort someone suffering from a deep loss. To this day certain memories are a source of teaching, joy and wonder to me. I am continually reminded of and misuses of mobile phones essay, how blessed I have been to have two parents who were brave and strong enough to venture into unknown lands. Teaching Fellowship? They wanted to graduate school speech pathology get to know people in various countries on a deep personal level, rather than isolating themselves comfortably in ex-pat communities. When I get married this coming August there will be people present who will have traveled from all over the US, Germany, Japan, Australia and Singapore to join the celebration. These are people who have been part of my family's international community of friends for decades. It is an honor to teaching fellowship know that I am woven into the weave of so many different worlds.

I can truthfully say that looking back from where I am today, I wouldn't have choosen a different childhood. 1997, Debra Carlson, WorldWeave Publications.
